Title: Sh*troen, bye bye.
Post by: poprodder on January 03, 2014, 12:59:04 PM
right at the moment this will be just for ideas until i've sold me mustang to free up some money, and not all money from that can be used for project.

i've got a couple of motors i'd like which are not hotrod based.

both at different ends of the spectrum, a scimitar and vw beetle.

will need to have 4 seats, a roof and economical(ish!!!)

I bought and drove a SE6 back from Gloucester way, on an auto and returned about 28 on arun which I thought was quite reasonable.

I do like a good Beetle as well ;)

I love Volkswagens in any shape or form but the Scimitar is really cool cos you don't see as many of them!

scimitar is winning it at the moment, got some body mods in mind, nothing crazy.
will need to be an auto(yes i've got lazy, but love driving them now in traffic and cruising along)

Had an SE6 about 20 years ago as always liked them (SE6 is the later model to the SE5 in the photos. Scimitar the did the "hot cross bun" add-in to make it wider and longer) .
SE6 has more space, but not as pretty as the SE5. Both ran the Ford Essex V6, and they drank fuel..... It did have a big tank, but even in back then, folk in petrol stations used to comment on how much it cost to top up!!

Scimitar bodies (fibreglass) can unbolt form the chassis, which makes fixing (welding) the outriggers a bit more safe. Front trunnions wear, engines an overheat as they need a header tank mod done to allow the coolant filler cap be raised (to prevent air traps). There is some load space in the rear, but only the glass hinges up, so watch your head on the edge when loading as there's a large stepped edge to get things over.  ::)
Window rubbers can age, fibreglass can craze (but doesn't rust!), door can drop on hinges.

The earlier SE4 saloons are now rare, and in my view a head turner. SE4a has a straight 6 Ford, SE4b has V6, then the SE4c had another straight 6.

think it will be a se5 or se5a
wheel change, a few body work changes(i've been known to dable with f/glass in the past!!!!)
would like to do a custom dash etc.

shock horror its down to 2 vehicles, both air cooled engines, both at different ends!!!!

2cv or beetle.

never owned either.

think the beetle has been done lots, but not seen many snails about, the only problem is, is that prices are rising like no tomorrow!!!!

There's some nice 2cv based 'rods' about , they are chassied as well so no reg worries with cutting them up .Like you say getting dearer for a decent one. However there's nothing quite so disheartening as spending months welding something back together before you actually start on the enjoyable bit.

does anybody know anything about BMW R series flat twin motorcycle engines? as a kit is available to fit to 2cv gearbox.
they've even tested it on track.

Loony & I were driving around Basingstoke yesterday & passed a guy working on a 2CV at the side of the road. Not sure if he lived there or had broken down, but in an hour or so he'd completely stripped the front end bodywork, done some work on the engine & replaced everything -at least they're easy to work on!

plan of attack was to remove hood including rear window, then cover with aluminium sheet but still having a opening hood section at front.

a few more fixings are needed.

got to paint this metal panel in between.

got to get some black boat acrylic material to make new front hood section.

I want to fit an oval rear window.

What about a split 'D' rear window echoing the shape of the front and rear doors ?  Plus panel in the very rear most side window?  Oh yeah, and break out the 4" radiator roller , it'll look like you sprayed the paint then.

Title: Re: Sh*troen.
Post by: Manky Monkey on July 09, 2014, 06:01:57 PM
Panel in the rear quarter lights by boxing in the rear arches, extending up in a tapering, sweeping curve to the gutter line. Extend the 3 vertical swage lines in the bootlid up into the roof so they split the rear window into 2 quadrant shapes, (bottom of the rear windows straight to match the top of the bootlid). Paint the roof brown so it's part of the body. Raise the bumpers level with the bodywork instead of hanging below it. French new circular rear lights into the rear bumper & paint the bumpers body colour. Half French the front lights into the front wings, so they're still obviously Citroen originals, but level with the top of the wings & partly set back into them, (think the front indicators are already partly set in aren't they? So they'd match). That'd lose those horizontal light mounting bars that spoil the curves at the front. Lose the plastic grille shell & cut a new one into the bonnet in the shape of the Citroen chevrons. Back it with mesh, painted black & maybe highlight the edge with chrome edging trim or add a raised lip around it in 8mm round bar painted body colour.

Or slam it to the deck with full skirts on the front wings to match the rears, then paint it white with blacked out windows & some sci fi accessories, fake jet engine cowls etc to create a Star Wars type hover vehicle.

Or play up it's quirky shape & go Steampunk, with lots of brass detailing & fake cogs & copper tubing & a polished wooden dash full of antique gauges, with sumptuous Victorian red velvet seating, (think Jules Verne's time machine in the film).

Lots of potential, but like the Minx gasser, I reckon you need to commit to it & go over the top to properly pull it off.  ;)

if they dont jump em ,, the ignition gets drowned ,,ie. the coils behind the flywheel get soaked ..==easiest fix is to leave them in a warm garage/place with a dehumidifier for a few days.week otherwise its an engine out to dry em out ,,

been there done that,,

Coo, those doors look like a lot of work.
Is that engine reversal do-able as a DIY job in front of your house Chris, or a major fabrication job?

Title: Re: Sh*troen.
Post by: phunkie hiboy on December 04, 2014, 09:39:29 PM
Yes, but maybe front engine as well. You can do the rear engine conversion using standard parts (ie parts from the front end!!). French foreign legion used a type of jeep (Mehari) based on the 2CV chassis with the two engine 4 wd set up.

new rear tyres bought(awaiting delivery) not crossplys but radials.

also had trouble with battery not having much cranking power. found out the battery(fitted by previous owner just before i bought it) is way below the cranking spec that it should be!!!! so will have to buy a new one. this is third time i'm having to charge it!!!!

This is start of the front section of roof for 2cv, original roof frame cut and welded to nos front hood bar, so that it can still be clamped down inside. Aluminium sheet was then riveted to it, this section of roof will be in two sections, folding in the middle onto itself then onto rear roof.

Title: Re: Sh*troen.
Post by: Manky Monkey on April 04, 2015, 09:50:48 AM
;D So run me through this again -you build a remote gear linkage, running back over/around the engine? So the gearshift positions will be reversed? Then what? How do you get forward gears instead of 4 reverses? I'm confoosed.

Title: Re: Sh*troen.
Post by: poprodder on April 04, 2015, 01:02:13 PM
the diff is reversed in the gearbox. yes that easy!!!!
the gearshift pattern is strange anyway so altering it won't make much difference.

Title: Re: Sh*troen.
Post by: kapri on April 04, 2015, 01:13:53 PM
You can change the pattern back to 'correct' by varying the new shifter pivot point from base to midway.

oh bugger, not good when hammering an item on the 2cv and parts of rotten chassis fall on the floor!!!!!!

Uh-oh ! A bit more work required then.
The only consolation is a separate chassis is easier to repair.

Having looked at a 'bare' 2CV chassis a few years ago, I remember thinking that it would be a fairly straight forward job to replicate one out of 90x40mm box section, or similar, so, bit like Heralds and Spits. remove body & just rehang all the bits.. :D :D :D :D :D, although I understand new, after market, chassis are still available, which is what the Lomax 3 wheeler was based around, just a thought! just done a quick calculation of parts needed for 2cv, this does not include anything i've spent so far plus any of the little extras that might be needed. just off the shelf parts. £666!!!!! blimey!! plus it could realy do with new chassis which is £600, then lots and lots of extra's

Just been and looked closer at 2cv chassis, past saving. Looks like this could be broken for spares.

i've made a decision, steel ordered for new 2cv chassis.

will be a lightweight chassis. need to remove body first, some parts of original chassis will be used. (cross tubes with suspension mounts on ends)

i've taken some more pics of 2cv, more chassis rot found after removing engine and box, a little more rot inside, but finding patches welded on everywhere. losing heart in it. not even looked on the nearside yet!!!!! time to make some decisions.

Bit like my daughter's Fiat 127 that she loved so much - she took it to a welder who said he's love to fix the floor for her but there was nothing decent to weld it to!  (She took it to the scrapyard and even they didn't want it!)
