Title: Wheels Day 40th Anniversary - Dunsfold, Good Friday April 18th 2014
Post by: Tony oily bike on January 02, 2014, 10:15:29 AM
The Surrey Street Rodders are celebrating their 40th Wheels Day on Good Friday, the 18th April 2014 at the 'new' venue of Dunsfold Aerodrome.
This is often considered the 'season opener' - well worth a visit!

In recent years, the annual Wheels Day has been at Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot, and before that, at Slyfield Green in Guildford.

RE: Dogs
I hope they do enforce it because it is annoying when you go to the trouble of getting someone to look after your dog for the day but then arrive at Wheels Day to find loads of dogs there.   >:(

Went up to Dunsfold today to help Victory Wheelers erect their gazebo for tomorrow, and had a look around, watched Bloodhound being unloaded from a curtain sided lorry with a forklift this just did not look right?

Glad we arrived at Dunsfold for 7.30am and could drive straight in, by this time some traders were in holding bays waiting for their pitches.

After stumbling over the long grass area in front of the traders I began to lose  interest in taking photos so above are just a small selection of the motors here today.

Good to meet up with a few Manky Monkeys today.

Back home in the warmth, with a cup if tea, and I didnt have to queue for the toilet either!!!  Was a good day, plenty to see, and plenty more people to chat to. I got your text JJ but unfortunately didn't see you. Saw Rick and Loonys parents. Arrived with myself and 2 passengers, then promptly got separated and wondered around by myself for the rest of the day!!! Catch up with you soon JJ. XX

Hi guys. Haven't been through my photographs yet, but looks like you've captured a lot of it Rick.
Met up with BayChimp, Loony, Loony's parents, Chris, (Forgotten), Tom & Tom's lady at the workshop at 9 this morning & drove over to Dunsfold in convoy.
Lots of mixed verdicts on other forums tonight about the show. Some hotrodders have reported queuing for up to 3 hours to get in, with some even being turned away at the gate. There were a lot of "straight" cars in the show field, while dozens of show worthy vehicles were left to park in the public carpark outside. Too many market stall type traders, selling non auto related tatt, horrendous queues for food & loos, hundreds of people getting in for free, (entrance was £5 for charity), by parking on the side of the entrance ways & just walking across the grass, the gate staff stopped collecting entrance money at 1pm, disorganised marshals giving conflicting information etc, etc

However, it was the first show at a new & significantly larger venue. Twice as many show cars turned up as last year. The organisers were under pressure from the Police to get vehicles off the roads & into the site as quickly as possible. Plus, it's not just a hotrod show, it's for any type of interesting wheeled vehicle. You'll never please everyone & the same people who've said they wished it was still at the old site, probably complained last year that it should be moved to somewhere bigger.
Mr BayChimp & I walked all day & still missed half the cars I've seen on other forums. We bumped into loads of friends & missed seeing just as many. I bought a few bits & pieces from the stalls. We left at 4.30 & drove more or less straight out. A very tiring day but well worth going. Hopefully "lessons will be learnt" for next year & it'll be more organised. A victim of it's own success if anything.

As Rick said, we were there early. We were in my Citroën but we parked up in a field behind Derek's Diner where Rick had been given permission to do so when he went to help shift gear for Victory Wheelers.  Like you say Andy, there were normal cars here and there in the main field as well as those PT cruisers. Why do their owners think they are "show cars" and park them in the main area. I really don't get that.

Coming in to the grounds, we sailed past Nathan who said he had been queueing for quite a while and he had a pitch to set up!

I found the vehicles once parked were very close together. Not only did this make it difficult for me to manoeuvre my scooter I also felt it prevented many people from setting up chairs and picnics by their vehicles. When people do this I think it makes a meet more sociable and makes it easier for you to find and catch up with people.

I felt like I was just going up and down the stalls and cars but missing a lot of things because of the layout i.e.  some stalls facing the grass, some facing the runway.

Like you said Andy, it is the first time at this site and you learn from it particularly the logistic side of it. We also have to remember the SSRs are not a big group members wise so to put on a show this size and in a new venue, is no mean feat.

We left about 2ish, which is the earliest I have left the show, earlier even than when it has rained. I'm glad I went but overall I felt the show lacked atmosphere and it felt a bit flat.  If they have it again there next year attendees will know more about what to expect.

So well done SSRs. I hope tomorrow you all get to put your feet up.

JJ  :)

Left Farnham in the bus at 8.00 arrived and started to que at 8.35 on the show field after about 10 mins queuing not bad really.
Needed more marshals directing the cars and sorting out the s**tters,
I liked the variation of the cars on the show field but think there should be a cut off date say 1984

I had a good day, the journey home was worse up to Guildford I expect that will be blamed on the SSR unfairly.

Manky   well put... a victim of its own success.
To all the people that slat the Surrey Street rodders.......Put on your own show see how difficult it is.

Its always difficult putting on an event....... estimating the number of attendees, finding volunteers, trying to structure things without being too prescriptive, deciding what should/shouldn't be in the show area as the masses arrive etc etc.

So I'll start by thanking, and congratulating, the SSR for their WD40! (have been to a 'few', think my first WD was around late 70's).
The SSR will be aware of what went well, and where improvements can be made, after all, its the first show at this 'new' venue, so I'll wish them good fortune for WD41.

Queued from the A281 near Barnhurst Lane, and entered the site from the northerly Stovolds Hill entrance, arriving about 9.15. Got parked up and went a wandering (as ya do).

The vehicle that impressed me most was the Allard dragster which has recently undergone a full restoration.
http://www.allardregister.org/dragster/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Allard

To say this car has history (and significance with respect to drag racing) would be an understatement and a half. In essence, Sydney Allard managed to start the British drag racing scene back in the 60's.

Another vehicle that 'floated my boat' was seeing Nick Butler’s infamous mid 70's "Revenge"   http://www.nick-butler.co.uk/revenge.html drive (rumble) onto site.
Remember opening the then new-issue of Custom Car (March 1977 issue - way back when) and seeing this for the first time…… what a machine!

Bumped in to Archie and his lady friend, Manky and MrBayChimp, and said hello to Derek working hard at his DuelFuel food outlet (good food and quick service my friend, thanks!).

Wandered round the vehicles, took a few snaps (some including vehicles that Rick has shown)

Revenge

Seeing "Revenge" again in the flesh was the highlight of the day for me too. Took me straight back to seeing it at Blackbushe airport drags in the late 70s. The present owner's done a fabulous job of refurbishing it, though for me, it will always be remembered in it's original green paint. BayChimp & I were lucky enough to watch it fire up & drive out at the end of the day, the owner giving it a good blip of the throttle as he left the show area. Perfect.

Did anyone wonder about Rick's photo (shown again below) or did you all know what is was?

Well for those like me who didn't know, it is one of those drones that they have been talking about in the press. I am assuming someone was using it to take photos of the event rather than the police recording the event looking for any law breaking.

Still, very Big Brother either way. An eye in the sky could be recording things you don't want recorded (like the bloke having a wee up against his van).

Anyway, if you see one hovering outside your bedroom window, you will at least have no doubts about what it is.  :o

JJ :)

I think so..... looking at Nick's site, there's a photo that clearly shows it.

http://www.nick-butler.co.uk/revenge.html

To confirm, dig out a copy of March 1977's Custom Car, as that's when it was featured.

Saw Revenge being driven down Guildford High Street (used to be a two way road) back in the 70's or early 80's, and asked he driver if he was going to the Blackbushe the following weekend. Guess it was Nick driving it back then............

I had a great day on Friday. After a bit of a slow start involving 40 minutes sat by the gate waiting to be allowed in, but after that the day went very quickly. I didn't get to see much of the show, far to busy talking to everyone. Being by the entranced helped as I could watch all the vehicles that rolled past the stall :)
It was great to catch up with some of the guys that popped over to say hello.

I've read a lot of negative comments on various forums, but I say well done SSR. It can't be easy organising the logistics of a show of this size. I think all the people who complain should thinking about volunteering to help next year :)

Wheels Day

The 40th Wheels Day was not as the Surrey Street Rodders would have wished.

We anticipated an attendance of 6,000 people which would have been an increase of 50% of our best ever Wheels Day. Dunsfold Park has informed us the actual number on Good Friday was in excess of 18,000. We are sorry for the problems this unprecedented turnout of vehicles caused.

At one point we did stop charging entry, in order to get as many people as possible on site and try to alleviate the 12 mile traffic jam. Since the show a tirade of negative forum postings, abusive phone calls, emails and now accusations of inappropriate dealings with Wheels Day money have led to the following decision.

There will be no more Wheels Day in its present form.

The Surrey Street Rodders would like to thank everybody who has supported us in the past 40 years and helped so many charities; you are a credit to our hobby

That is a shame and the SSRs do not deserve this treatment. I really feel for them and I even e-mailed them the other day telling them to ignore all the moaning and abuse and to say that even though there were some problems, the club did well to organize so many in a new location. I also told them that the feedback on Manky had been positive and appreciative.

I don't think anyone would say this Wheels' Day was perfect but equally, no one should have expected perfection in a new venue.

I have been going to Wheels' Day for the past 5 years and have really enjoyed it, even when it has poured down, and even though Dunsfold paled in comparison to Rushmoor, it was still a good day and I would have gone again next year.

The one thing that really shocks me, is the accusations about the money. I do worry about that with one or two events but never Wheels' Day.

For any of you who didn't get the chance to pay on Friday, you can pay directly to the charities the SSRs were supporting via Wheels' Day.

Sebastian's Action Trust (http://www.sebastiansactiontrust.org/donate/donate_now.php (http://www.sebastiansactiontrust.org/donate/donate_now.php) ) by simply clicking on the one-off donation link (you are offered various ways to pay)

or to

Shooting Star Chase (http://www.shootingstarchase.org.uk/support-us/ways-to-give/donate/ (http://www.shootingstarchase.org.uk/support-us/ways-to-give/donate/) ) by clicking the large purple donate button on their page.

Both do amazing work with children with life limiting diseases and have both received our support over the years!

Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Many people have been getting in touch with the SSRs to donate, especially as they know lots of people didn't because of the SSRs stopping the collection in order to get the vehicles in the grounds more quickly.

It is a shame, but gives a bit of time to rethink it. I think the pre84 idea is good as it will clear down the showfield a bit and also hopefully not attract certain types who come with that style of car - I saw someone whinging about an official turning their audio demo bmw off because they were trying to play music.

They're getting a lot of unfair stick and can't believe people are going to the length to be abusive - there's nothing to be abusive about, even the queuing, if you were late you had to queue at rushmoor - I know this as it used to come up to my house a couple miles away!

Stupid stupid people out there. SSR shouldn't listen to them or just tell them not to bother coming next time.

I often wonder if these "people" have their own hidden agenda, Lets knock 'em no matter what, so as JJ says lets all support the SSR and hope they may reconsider. I drove up from Plymouth and got held up both ways, hey, it was Easter and it was dry. So no real surprise to find it crammed with visitors. As said earlier it fell down because it was so successful.

Jayjay, when people start to throw around accusations about money ( I didn't see the posts but heard about them ) to me it says far more about THOSE posters than anything else. It's judging others by 'your' own poor standards,e've  had it levelled at ACE , even though we are completely self funding and pride ourselves on that fact as it allows us to remove completely impartial.

I didn't think the queueing was that much of a problem,Manky tells me that when they have the Wings and Wheels day at Dunsfold the traffic is as bad if not worse. What they should have done is collected the money on the gates as they did at Rushmoor. This then turns the whole site into the arena the same as Aldershot, and it could have been set up in a slightly different way. I hope they have a rethink and decide to hold another show.
The Whingers and the detractors can then stay at home, and the rest of us can have a good day out. As for the money matter you always get someone who throws out that old chestnut, and other people then jump on the Bandwagon as it winds people up. Come on SSR give it one more try I will certainly attend, along with a whole Troop of Monkey I suspect.

There's always people who'll accuse others of misppropriating money - I even had that from the supposed treasurer of our bike club because I passed some Charity cash direct to the charity AND got a receipt!

I don't know these people but I can well understand them not wanting to tackle putting on the event in the same form again, I've been part of events that got too big to handle and there's just no fun in it any more.  And if it ain't fun, what's the point of doing it?

Don't do facebook, but got pointed in the direction of this little gem ..................

Wheels day IS to continue!!

SSR over the coming few weeks will meet to discuss the changes that are to occur, look at what problems have arisen from this year and others and effectively create a 'new' wheels day.

Thank you for the support you have offered to SSR and please continue to do so.

We are exceptionally excited by this news and very proud to be able to share with all of you!!! Keep watching for more updates

That's great news! Now let's hope all those who pledged to help, actually do, (I'd quite happily wear a marshal's bib for a couple of hours).
