Title: Need more rod stuff
Post by: panthershaun on November 12, 2006, 11:12:39 PM
Come on guys, I need some rod stuff!!!!!

There's gotta be a dirty joke in there somewhere -but you're right. Not enough hotrod info.
Mr Brock? Got anything for us?
I've got half a Sherpa van sat in my lockup which needs ripping apart to provide the nice period looking front beam axle & rear axle plus steering box for my rod. Anyone want to come round with a big disc cutter & spend an afternoon chopping it up?

Coo  :o a roadster Sherpa, pretty rare those :P

It was the only way it'd fit in the lock up!  :D

Just contacted the guy with the Sherpa front axle to see if I can pick it up.
Got a list of other things I will be looking for.
Sherpa rear axle,
Land Rover steering box,
16" steel wheels,
I have found an old Pop sitting in brambles near me, I am currently trying to find the owner and see if its for sale, would make a good base for a pick up, RatRod stylie.

I've got a logbook for a '58 Pop.
I picked up a set of black taxi cab steel wheels for mine from the Winter NSRA swapmeet last year. 10 quid each. Can't remember what size standard Sherpa wheels are but mine will be going spare.

I think they ae 14" which is a little small, but I may still take you up on that as they will do until I find 16" wheels.

I'm all a dither now!!!!! :-*

Do I get the feeling that I may have prompted a renewed interest in your Rod build ;)

 ;D
The interest never went away. I've always loved old time rods & fancied one of my own but not had the facilities or knowledge to build one. I was at a drag race meet at Avon Park last year -or may even have been the year before, when the bodyshell came up for sale, so I grabbed it. It's currently taking up a large chunk of my brother's workshop space, while the donor engine's sat outside. Flap & I had a day trip to Cardiff last Winter to collect the Sherpa -a 100 quid Ebay buy. It seemed the cheapest way of getting the bits I need, but has been sat in my lock up ever since while I try & figure out a way of disposing of the rest.
Ska Man needs his garage back soon so I have to get my trike frame finished & outta there -which means the van needs to go so I can use the lockup for the trike build. Complicated huh!
Bits are just picked up as & when I can afford them. I bought a brand new Morris Oxford speedo & a pair of Austin Chummy seat frames at the Brooklands autojumble back in the Summer, which will make great bomber style rod seats once they're powdercoated metallic silver. I'm relying on my brother Brock for the technical expertise on this one. I trust his taste & would happily give him a free hand to design & build whatever he felt like, but obviously want to build as much as possible myself. I'd like to see it done over this Winter, ready for the new drag race season, but Brock's already kinda busy building his new race car & transporter & I've got a trike to build!

Nice seats ;D why not trailer the remains of the van to the scrappy, get them to cut off the axles and trailer those bits home.
Always thought it was beyond me to build a Rod, but what the f*&k I'm going to give it a go.
Want mine to be a lowish pickup, fenderless or at least fitted with cycle guards, matt black (of course) and a hard top so that I can use it as my daily driver ::)
Spotted a nice Morris 8 on eVil bay but can't think how to get it back from Derbyshire, also know where an old Pop is sitting amongst the brambles near me, hope I can wresstle that off the owner, Of coure I'm going to restore it !!! :-[, would like to do it this winter, but I also want to build the Panther trike before the Dragon rally in Feb if I can find a "Cheap" frame builder to help me with the rear subframe, also need to finish my Indian, Panther trials and rebuild my BSA ::) plus the Landie needs work for its MOT next week. All this needs to be done but I'm currently working double shifts at the PO as the missus is unemployed and I'm trying to build up the mag as well :-\ :-\ HELP!!!!!!!! :'(

Here's a Pop pickup I found, not for sale sadly.......

Now that I really like!

Been looking at this thread thinking, yes I can see it's good but it doesn't appeal to me......

Till I saw that pickup, I'd love to own that!

Title: Re: Need more rod stuff
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 16, 2006, 10:44:13 PM
Yep, I like that too.
I can't see any way of registering my build for the road, so think it's going to end up as purely a track toy, which is a real shame. Very tempted to buy an old Brit motor, along the lines of Janie & Dave's Consul & drop the Jag motor in that instead. At least that way it'd be useable as a daily driver, but I do really fancy the rod. Anyone got something like that Pop pickup they fancy swapping for my rod bits?!

Title: Re: Need more rod stuff
Post by: panthershaun on November 17, 2006, 08:19:41 PM
pm'd you Andy ;). Mine has got to be a daily driver pickup, needs a roof and locking doors so that I can park it and leave it. can't be too low as I need to be able to get over speed humps and curb's.
I would love that Pop pickup but it needs a roof chop and lowering at the front and painting matt black ;D

OK You would be daft to bid on this and pick it up ;) but bloody stupid not to ;D you could sell the T body for a good price and almost make you money back :-X :-X :-X OK I'll shut up now :-[

I do try ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, it would be a better bet than the T, and once you have it on the road you can do almost want you want to it ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X

OK I'm going to bed now, will leave you alone :-* :-*

Still a git. Makes sense, which is the annoying bit. Still 2 days left on it, so hopefully it'll sky rocket beyond temptation by then. Would be cool though wouldn't it -a Manky Monkey Motors truck. Hmmm.

Title: Re: Need more rod stuff
Post by: panthershaun on November 17, 2006, 10:57:02 PM
Thought you would be in bed by now ;D, yes it is a silly idea, but aren't all the best ones stupid ???
if you built a rod truck you could sell the fiesta and have a really cool everyday driver, but I'm really not helping am I.
I will retire into the background and let the ebay auction run its course, time will be the decider. ;)

We're gutting an unsuspecting Reliant tomorrow -hacksawing it up & carting it off to the tip. If you get bored you're welcome to join us!
I'll PM my mobile number.

Was just passing, thought Id throw this in there to think about! ;D
And if you sold the T body for a couple o hundred notes you would be up by 100 quid. Flog the van next and its pretty much paying for itself! 8)

Now that pic makes me feel old!  My first car was one of those (well mine was an Anglia) but without the mods of course!
I was 17 at the time (it's while ago) and it went like a rocket!  Well it would do 70 which was pretty good as my previous transport was a Honda C50.  But when it started pumping oil out on top of the block it seemed a good time to part company so I chopped it in for a Moggy 1000 which was quite sophisticated in comparison!

I'd have loved to have my old black sit-up-and-beg looking like that one tho!

Just imagine that with a pickup bed ;D and MMM logo on the side. would look pretty cool  :o :o :o

Spoke to Brock by email last night & he's talked me out of buying the Pop bodyshell. He's right, it'd be a major project & Ii just can't take on any more at the moment. Can't afford the ones I've got. It's still on Ebay, (the sale ends at 9.15 this evening), for 101 quid, so I shan't torment myself by watching it!
So, I've decided to offload my hotrod project. Just can't afford to do it & it's sat there, in various garages, not moving, just gathering dust & getting in the way -a bit like Flap. As Brock said, I'd be better off flogging all the bits & buying something drivable.
Anyone want to buy this lot:
Pop Browns fibreglass '27 T roadster body, unused.
Basic steel box section chassis to suit.
5 core radiator.
Fibreglass rad shell.
4 litre straight 6 AJ6 Jag engine, (was running fine when it came out of the car but been stood outside for a year).
3 speed auto gearbox.
Part stripped Sherpa van to provide front beam axle with disc brakes, rear axle, prop & steering box etc.
Pair of repro Austin Chummy seat bases.
New Morris Oxford speedo + spare.
Morris Minor banjo type steering wheel.
Set of 4 steel black taxi cab wheels, (worn tyres fitted), to suit Sherpa bolt pattern.

Think that's the lot. I want to get rid of all this on Ebay as a job lot as soon as I've got some photos of the body. Anyone got any idea what it's worth?

Would look gorgeous Shaun, but I just haven't got the facilities or money or time to do it. Reality check- I need to finish what I've got! Got a bike that's just in need of a few afternoon's work to pass the MOT & be rideable -with a big toy run to attend on it in a couple of weeks time. And a trike that's still only half built & will need registering when it's done, that's already booked in for several Monkey runs in the Spring. The tatty but legal Fiesta van will see me through the Winter as a general runabout. Once I've got everything done, then I can look  at buying a drivable motor.

Sensible comments Andy, shame we have to go through life broke :-[, when I'm a rich and famous publishing guru, I will sponsor your truck build ;D.
I would think a starting bid of around £4-500  would be good, body alone must be worth nearly that. but I'm no expert and people are fickle things!!!
If it doesn't sell and you decide to break the lot, I would be interested in the wheels and maybe the seats.

Post by: Manky Monkey on November 19, 2006, 09:47:29 AM
Not fair is it.
O.K, you've got first refusal. Shifting the big bits is the main priority. I need to get the body & motor out of my brother's way & the Sherpa out of my lockup -I'm paying rent on that every week & can't use it.

And your bike out of my garage  ;D only kidding I'm quite attached to it now, I'll miss it when its gone  :'(

If I can spread enough bits around enough garages I won't have to rent one myself at all!
Bugger, just checked that Pop bodyshell on Ebay. Still only 101 quid with just 7 hours to go -argh!

Yes please mate. Just looked on Brit Chopper & couldn't see it -which section?

Title: Re: Need more rod stuff
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 20, 2006, 12:26:46 AM
Well, I succumbed to temptation & put a last minute bid in on the green Pop shell of 130 quid -don't worry. I didn't win! It went for 132, so I'm guessing the other guy probably entered a top bid of 150. No matter. I'm taking it as a sign. I'm gonna clear out the bits I've amassed in various people's garages, get the trike & bike done, enjoy riding them & maybe look for an old Brit semi classic to play with sometime next year.

Buy a fibreglass body, find a suitable logbook, ( ;)), build a new one.
My rod parts didn't sell on Ebay. Not a single bid. I had one guy who phoned me 2 hours before the auction ended, trying to barter the price down, & one more since it ended, who wanted just the body. I have a Plan B though. One of Brock's racing buddies is going to buy it all after Christmas to build a stripped down budget dragster.

Title: Re: Need more rod stuff
Post by: panthershaun on December 10, 2006, 09:51:51 AM
Sounds like a good plan, hope the rod parts go...

I have thought about a fiberglass body but as I want to cut the rear off and pickup it I would rather work with steel, also I do have a morris 1000 pickup rear cab panel sitting in my shed that needs a home.
Also been given this web site for Pop parts http://www.poppartsplus.co.uk and have contacted him.wish I had put a bid on that shell I mentioned now :'( :'(

Title: Re: Need more rod stuff
Post by: Manky Monkey on December 10, 2006, 10:24:50 AM
Me too. The T would've been great but not very practical for British motoring. A chopped Pop pickup -that's a bit of a mouthful! would be ideal. I converted my Moggy van into a pickup with a repro fibreglass cab back. Steel ones were pretty sought after even then -must be 20 years ago now.
