Title: this week i am mostly being a builder
Post by: dobber on November 01, 2013, 09:33:20 PM
Yet another week n a bit taken away from fun projects. noticed a house i have at the side of my depot was dropping quite a bit of pointing over the last few weeks. realised the belly that's been there since i bought it some 8 or so years ago was getting bigger quicker than my belly is.
got in touch with the insurance company and would you believe it,,, a non starter.. took the subsidence bit off the policy last year..
the through stone from the internal wall was a few inch shy of the outer skin.

got a mate of mine involved who is far more confident than me.. down to the hire shop for some tall acrows and strong boys to prop up the top bit

had to course the stone that was reusable by size n stack it then clear out all the dross [rubble fill] from between the inner n outer skin.
found quite a bit of old repairs and changes. the earliest documents i have for the house are from 1735. big hand written  with wax stamps.
used scaffold tube and clamps to lock the acrows together so if collapsed while pulling the stone out its less likely to knock the props out

let the pointing go off a bit then trimmed it up. unfortunatly not got the time at the mo to do it as nice as it could be.

used a trailer chassis with pallets on to store the stone  we were working with so not bending all the time

drilled into the inner wall gently to put in some brick ties, drilled the hole, blow it out with the compressor then bonded in the tie with chemi fix.
the reason it gave in the first place was not enough through stones.

Hi Dobber. Are there acro's on the inner skin with a pin between or are they on one side only?

hey up Andy.. they are just under the outer course of stone. we followed the  outside of the belly then drilled into the original lime morter of the nearest  big stone then hammer the strong boy in.. once its in to its limit we hook the acrow in and pressure it up.. been using them on the pub im converting to a house so got a bit more confidence in it now.

thanks folk...
had to get some more stone to replace the damaged bits. luckily i had some up at a pub I'm turning into a house. different type I'm told came from near ilkly which is a lot harder than the local sand stone. as we build up the courses we back fill it with the rubble [dross] that came out mixed in with cement. this makes for a very strong wall.

we found it easier to lay the stone out so we knew we had the right course height and enough for each course..  night came and the weather turned as we got to the higher courses

worked from 8 am and had to give up at 8.30pm with only  one course left to do. the rain got too bad, we were soaked and the beer was calling.

Monday morning saw the sun out and the wall dry, a bit of brick acid will clean off the cement which ran with the rain.
just one more stone needed to finish. was going to put a little time capsule in but never got round to it.

after a bit of time the new stone shouldn't be too noticeable. we had to grind out a few cracks to tidy the edge line and point it up. eventually the whole side elevation will get pointed to match.

we allowed 5 days to start, Monday to Friday. but as allways it was a little tight. lost Friday afternoon to the rain. did a full day Saturday and a few hours Monday. all in all a good job and i can stop worrying a bout the walls belly and concentrate on mine.

Great job there Dobber. We have done similar work on our house, I know how time consuming getting the courses right and tying in is. Looks really good.

forgot to finish this thread.   salvaged the old fallpipes with a few new brackets, saved a coupla quid n atrip to the merchants, and had to  put plastic inserts under the roof tiles which fold into the gutter to make the rain water reach the gutter as the previous cowboy left a gap so the rain ran down the wall.,
              so job done....
been putting this job  off for years, never thought i would be able to tackle some thing this big even with help, now its done other jobs dont seem so scarry.
