Had a bad night, so for distraction decided to make an OLDS pin badge.
First I soldered a 10p coin to a bolt head and machined off the face in the lathe and turned down the diameter a bit. The design was then painted onto the coin using a toothpick !
Once dry, this was then suspended in etchant for an hour or so. When etching was finished the badge was unsoldered from the bolt. After a bit of polishing, an old charity pin badge was epoxied on to the back.
It's not perfect, but then, it only cost 10p  :D

another great job ON  :D. i have never etched anything so can you tell me did you paint on the black parts or is that the etched bits? just thinking ahaed for project  ;)

No paint. The black area is etched, the bright raised. To get the colour I heated it with a gas torch then polished the raised areas.
Might have a go at enamelling next.

Olds, is there something that will etch stainless steel?

Not yet tried stainless myself but I believe ferric chloride will work, as will nitric acid etc.

we use a nitric acid solution at the milk bottling plant preiodically to clean the stainless pipework internally

Hmmmm, perhaps I shouldn't show this then.
My daughter purloined the badge, so had to do another. This time I used an old shilling and it etched much better. The background was filled with a translucent yellow resin.

I'm beginning to suspect you are in fact an alchemist, creating precious metals from base ones. Beautifully done Dave.
Just purely out of interest, could you etch lettering or symbols onto metal knobs such as, oh I don't know, the switches on my truck dashboard?

Nope, can't be done, no way , no how, not in this life time, not in a million years..........
........ well maybe.

Don't worry, not for a few months yet, but could look cool. I love the coloured finish.

Maybe you could make some Manky Monkey badges ;)
