Title: Home made pin badge. Post by: Olds on October 21, 2013, 05:01:30 AM Had a bad night, so for distraction decided to make an OLDS pin badge.
First I soldered a 10p coin to a bolt head and machined off the face in the lathe and turned down the diameter a bit. The design was then painted onto the coin using a toothpick ! Once dry, this was then suspended in etchant for an hour or so. When etching was finished the badge was unsoldered from the bolt. After a bit of polishing, an old charity pin badge was epoxied on to the back. It's not perfect, but then, it only cost 10p :D Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: twisted on October 21, 2013, 11:26:39 AM another great job ON :D. i have never etched anything so can you tell me did you paint on the black parts or is that the etched bits? just thinking ahaed for project ;)
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Olds on October 21, 2013, 11:53:22 AM No paint. The black area is etched, the bright raised. To get the colour I heated it with a gas torch then polished the raised areas.
Might have a go at enamelling next. Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: BikerGran on October 21, 2013, 12:50:36 PM Great!
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: morrag on October 21, 2013, 01:10:20 PM There must be a cheaper method than using a whole 10 PENCE COIN!!!!!! bloody hell Olds where will this all end, and anyway, you could end up being taken away by the "Boys in Blue" for defacing a coin of the realm, and another thing............. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Mendalot on October 23, 2013, 08:00:56 PM Olds, is there something that will etch stainless steel?
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Olds on October 24, 2013, 06:44:13 AM Not yet tried stainless myself but I believe ferric chloride will work, as will nitric acid etc.
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: triker_Chewie on October 24, 2013, 09:28:51 AM we use a nitric acid solution at the milk bottling plant preiodically to clean the stainless pipework internally
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Manky Monkey on October 25, 2013, 07:40:09 PM Ooh, I hate talented people!
Nicely done Dave. I'm already thinking of things I need making! Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Olds on November 06, 2013, 11:00:23 PM Hmmmm, perhaps I shouldn't show this then.
My daughter purloined the badge, so had to do another. This time I used an old shilling and it etched much better. The background was filled with a translucent yellow resin. Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Manky Monkey on November 07, 2013, 07:51:58 PM I'm beginning to suspect you are in fact an alchemist, creating precious metals from base ones. Beautifully done Dave.
Just purely out of interest, could you etch lettering or symbols onto metal knobs such as, oh I don't know, the switches on my truck dashboard? Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Olds on November 07, 2013, 08:20:50 PM Nope, can't be done, no way , no how, not in this life time, not in a million years..........
........ well maybe. Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Manky Monkey on November 07, 2013, 08:42:27 PM Don't worry, not for a few months yet, but could look cool. I love the coloured finish.
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: andyrennison on November 11, 2013, 12:25:36 PM Maybe you could make some Manky Monkey badges ;)
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: Manky Monkey on November 11, 2013, 12:27:40 PM I wasn't going to dare suggesting that!
Title: Re: Home made pin badge. Post by: andyrennison on November 12, 2013, 11:41:06 PM I laugh in the face of fear ;)
