Title: welder problem
Post by: hunter on October 17, 2013, 11:57:20 AM
I was using my welder the other day,Welding some thin material so trigger was used intermittently.
The wire stopped i thought the wire was stuck to the tip,On pulling the wire out i realized it wasn't stuck,
Now if i put the wire to earth and pull the trigger it will strike up but the wire won't feed,
So thinking the wire feed motor has failed i remove it so that i could look for a replacement,
Then i thought lets check it so i put 12v through it and it works,So I'm now thinking it's something on the board,I have looked at the board but can't see anything to indicate failure,

Anybody got any ideas.

WITH THE POWER OFF
test these diodes
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f291/chewie66666/hutercard_zps4f41dcc7.png)
meter on ohms, should get a reading one way none the other. reading should not be o.oo more like 500 or something.
also check the resistance of the transformer input and output windings

power on
check the output voltage of the transformer

Ok Checked the diodes, one reads 1.495.The other reads 1.295.
Will check the transformer later.

Try checking just the trigger as well.

The Transformer this time,
Power out 24V.
Ohms this time,The output side.34.60.
Input side 2.280.

transformer sounds good

the diodes, did you reverse the leads for another test? what was that?

Zero reading reversed.

OK so this is fixed,OR maybe not,
I put it back together with the intention of removing the, switch out of the gun,
But on pluggin it in i found that it works again ???,No explanation.

I know less than nothing about welders but if you take something non-working apart and put it back together and it works - you've usually fixed a loose or dirty connection!

I agree but when i took it apart i made note of how tight the connections were,
And they were all tight.

So maybe there's bit of dry solder somewhere - in which case it may do it again....    :-\

or a dodgy wire. Still, you cant fix what ain't broken, so use it till it happens again then try wiggling the wires etc :)
