 Does a built trike have to be on a Q plate or, like cars, can you get an age related if you use a new frame and  engine +box from a donor bike ?

I think the only time its NOT a Q plate is when you modify a bike into a trike by using a "bolt on" rear end (NOT welded, and no modifications to original main frame/chassis) then you keep the original bike reg.

I asked whether it would be a Q plate or some other plate when I went to Dvla with mine a couple of years ago.The guy said "it depends on how the paperwork is done" .........no, I didnt understand either! ;D

A new frame would have to be a copy of the original frame to retain an existing registration number. This is done on Land Rovers a lot.
I believe that's why there are so many 'Reliant' trikes that can't get a legitimate mot, as the new computer system tells the mot station exactly what the vehicle is registered as.

As Pete said, the only trikes that retain the reg no are those similar to mine which has the axle attached to a modified swingarm - replace the swingarm and you could put it back to being a bike.

you can do a home build and get a new vehicle reg not a Q , But it has to be all new parts ,ie engine ,box suspension  no second had parts and must have all reciepts for every thing showing it is new unused and price that shows its new  by that a new engine is gona be 700+ notes and isnt going to be a reliant unless you find a crated up job some were so if reciept says for eg 150 they will start asking questions ? other than that do a bike conversion as a bolt on or =Q

On the car side you can get an age related by using 2 major components from a donor vehicle for which you have the V5C AFTER BIVA  surprised they don't do the same re bikes / trikes .On the other hand that would mean  consistency from DVLA  ::) :o

Are you referring to the 8 point scheme. ???
This requires that some of the point must come from the original unmodified or new from the manufacturer, chassis/monocoque 
Or is there yet another way of doing things.

Nope, it's part of the registration process AFTER BIVA for cars .

You get a mandatory Q plate if modified ORIGINAL chassis or monococque , a mandatory Q plate if new chassis and  proof of 2 major compoents from one donor or and AGE related ( to donor logbook) if using 2 major components , that is usually engine and box though can be front and rear axle or front and rear suspensions.

You can also get a a NEW reg is vehicle si all new except for one reconditioned part.

I have an age related on my pick up after passing commercial SVA and using a Cortina donor with V5C and new chassis.

I know my way round the car registration process ( I was married to the manager of the LO for 10 years ! )but never been involved with bikes /trikes. I presumed they'd use the same system.
