Title: Anyone used disabled clause to register trike ?
Post by: kapri on September 08, 2013, 12:08:10 PM
If so can you tell me what is required to be accepted in the way of modifications for disabled use?  Also does it always remain disabled or when sold on can an able bodied person continue to use it? Not looking at this as a way round MSVA , genuine and pertinent question relative to me.

As far as Im aware, all that happens (apart from various forms/documents) is that the trike has a basic inspection by DVLA. This is to make sure" it is what it says on the tin". When trike is registered it will be in "disabled" taxation class and uses your DLA free road tax. Dont forget you can only use this on 1 vehicle at a time. At a later date you can apply to change taxation class to "Tricycle" when you can purchase a new tax disc.

Strange as it seems Pete is right. Though I can't understand why there is an exemption in the first place.
As far as I know just being a trike would be enough of a modification, if for instance the rider was disabled by way of balance problems.
The modifications should really be person specific and relate to their disability

Not really relevant, but my XS650 Yamaha bike says Taxation Class -disabled on the logbook. I'm told I can change this at my local Post Office when I re-tax it.

There used to be an exemption from some of SVA /BIVA for vehicles registered as disabled. It got abused so was stopped.

The NABD (National Association for Bikers with a Disability) negotiated an exemption from MSVA (or whatever the latest name is) for trikes built for disabled people.  As far as I know this is still in place.  For further info it's probably best to talk to the NABD

Correct, at the moment. DVLA information sheet. INF224
Yet another thing you wont be able to do once they close the DVLA LOs

Don't worry though, the whole reason for shutting the LOs is to make it all MORE efficient...yeah right! ::)

So mailed NABD 11 days ago , no reply . Guess it's because I'm not a disabled biker but disabled and wanting to be a biker..oh well.

Not sure if they have any paid office staff at present and they may have been a bit busy with a couple of events.  They certainly don't discriminate between those who are already bikers (or trikers) and those who aren't, in fact they have adapted bikes for learners to borrow.  They did try this with trikes but it didn't really work.

Did you email a particular person, or NABD in general?  I may be able to find out who's the best person to contact as although I'm no longer a rep I still know some NABD people.

I understand they are volunteers BG so wasn't expecting an instant reply :) I contacted whoever was listed as dealing with adaptations on their website?

Kapri - I had a look at the thread about this on the NABD forum and had a reply on the NABD forum from Gary Seddon who I knew when I was a NABD rep .......

Quote
Get him to ring the office on 0844 415 4849 Bobbi.

I know the adaptions advisor Tracey Browne has been away for a couple of weeks on tour earning a crust but she's back in Madchester now so will be getting stuck into her emails.

Rick is probably the best to ask at the moment, the dispensation for trikes adapted for use by a disabled rider is still in effect so most of the information regarding that is still current. The forms and method will still be the same. I've done it twice myself and will be doing it again once my current project is finished so you could always give your mate my email addy as I wrote the original piece. I'll be contacting all the relevant authorities about my build in the next few weeks just to check.

I might even do a re-write with the updated info.

By the way the original thread is at grumpygaz@gmail.com (http://grumpygaz@gmail.com)  and I've PM'd you his email address.

Gary's reply was to my post suggesting some of it may be outdated now...

Hope this helps!

Thanks BG, would you believe I didn't spot the forum link on their website ?! DOH!!  I'll give them a shout later . Bearing in mind it will all be changing again as all Local Offices will be closed permanently by Dec 13th this year :(

Gary has checked and the dispensation for disabled is still the same, so this thread is still relevant re how to go about it (including whether you want to use the 'free tax' option on the trike or not)

Thanks for your help on this BG  ;D I'll be building to MSVA standard anyway and may still do the test .However if there are issues caused by my mods to help me ride I'll go down this route. Once again, thanks.

For info I won't be able to use twist throttle or pull brakes / clutch so will need to adapt to suit. Sorted a lot of my parts just deciding on a suitable donor bike.

Didn't come up on my saved searches Andy, guess it's because it's CX500 and not CX 500 . Now watching and thinking :) Got a lead on a BMW R100 as well. Marian wants me to wait until my EUS test on Monday, just so it's not another piece of crap to sell if the results bad! LOL
