having just been reading the msva regs it makes referance to a side mount number plate and states that there must be provision for a plate on the opposite side,is this correct or am i reading it wrong as this is something i might want to do if i 'bob' my bike although it won't need an msva i'd like to be clear where i stand

What Darren says is true. In depth all the regs mean is if you have it mounted one side there must be space on the other to mount it. Which is daft because there always will be.

I always thought if side mounted,It had to be mounted on the near side,
So that a beat police officer could read it.

For MSVA, you need to have provision to mount the plate or plates (as you don't actually have any). I think that most testers will take this as meaning somewhere to actually mount the plates on. Then you get into the problem that the space to fit a number plate requires illumination. As well as ensuring that the mount complies with external projection requirements as well as symmetry of lighting if using the number plate bracket to mount the tail/brake light.
On the trike I had to fit a side mount on the offside due to the tailgate. The examiner stood at 45 deg. toward the nearside to ensure that the plate could still be seen clearly.

On the road no one seems to worry, as long as the plate is not mounted any further forward than the rear axle.

as i wont need msva then i should be ok with it mounted on 1 side then. i was going to mount at the axle spindle so i might have a go at it over the winter which going by the weather this morning may have already arrived  :(
