2 miles off junction 2 of the M27, near Beaulieu in Hampshire.

After a month or so of blazing sunshine, we finally had some rain last night. The skies were still looking grey & threatening this morning, so it was almost 9.30 before I finally decided to go to the Netley steam fair. My ol' truck's in bare metal, with no glass in the side windows, so I didn't fancy trawling home in the pouring rain. Needn't have worried though. By the time I'd pulled the tarpaulin off it outside Loony's workshop & warmed it up, the sun was out once more.
An enjoyable 30 mile drive down the M3 & onto the M27 into the New Forest, with maybe a 10 minute queue to get into the show carpark. I've been to lots of motorcycle autojumbles at Netley but never the steam fair. A well organised event. Not a huge show, but definitely enough to keep me interested for an afternoon. The warm sunshine helped too of course. Several arenas with displays of vehicles, working & obedience dogs, trials riding, a sky diving team etc, as well as plenty of trade stalls & a big local produce marquee, (I bought a new steering wheel for my truck from one of the tractor spares guys, plus a very tasty Somerset duck burger from the marquee).
This was my third steam rally this Summer & I've been struck by how many youngsters are getting involved, girls as well as boys & not just polishing brasses, but actively running & displaying their own machinery. Looks like steam will still be going strong for many years yet.

Really? A fair old trek down the country from your neck o' the woods Mike. I love steam fairs. They're always pleasant events. No hassle & lots of genuine enthusiasts. Just ...nice, shows. There's something fascinating about those huge old engines too, running as smoothly as a pocket watch. I'm definitely developing a thing for vintage tractors too. Lovely.

My neighbour scratch built a Foden steam lorry (bit like the blue one but not full size) and used a Reliant rear axle. Managed to get it fully registered and road legal. :) Unfortunately had to sell last year due to health problems. :(

Yeah, first one I'd seen that wasn't silver.
There's whole rallies just for miniature steam. They always look slightly comical to me with a big guy perched on them, but some of them take it very seriously.

Some of those 'old' tractors make me feel vintage - they're newer than the ones I drove when I was on the farm!

Yup. For some reason this "need" seems to come to us all eventually. Maybe it's an age thing. A bit like buying a Harley or getting a tattoo. ;) ;D

Never felt the need for either of those, so I'm obviously younger than I thought I was.

Yeah, I'm amazed the health n safety people allow all the small kids to run about around all that unguarded machinery really.

As long as there's no money being made or the public aren't been asked to do the work the hse leave you alone
