Title: Genealogy Post by: tbone on July 01, 2013, 07:12:50 PM I was given the gift of a months subscription to a well known genealogy site recently and been busy researching my family history.
I have predominately concentrated on my paternal line as that's obviously the line of my surname and have traced back to the birth of my great great great grandfather in 1827. As someone who didn't even know any of his grandfathers, I find it all fascinating. As yet, I have no skeletons in the cupboard either good or bad but i still have to trace my maternal line, given that I was always told my mothers family were circus folk, I could yet turn up a few suprises! Title: Re: Genealogy Post by: Manky Monkey on July 01, 2013, 09:49:33 PM Circus folk? -cool!

Back to Genealogy- Started looking into my family some years ago. Luckily someone had already done my mothers side. Seems they were possibly originally from Scotland and moved to the west country, possibly due to the land clearances. My fathers side have been local for ever. Earliest record I've found is from the 16 th C. As you say it's fascinating but can also be very frustrating when records are not available. Title: Re: Genealogy Post by: spanners on July 02, 2013, 08:42:05 AM my dads side of our family comes from cheshire and theres a village of the same name so were sort of famous
Title: Re: Genealogy Post by: fifer on July 02, 2013, 08:47:32 AM If anyone finds a connection to Scotland then they should jump with joy .
The Scottish records were the first records to be fully digitised and put online with full extracts available for peanuts . Birth , marriage and death records also give much more detail than the English records . Some English records can also be viewed on the free BMD site http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ The Scottish naming sequence for children makes it easier to see which family is probably the correct one The FIRST SON was named after the FATHER,s FATHER The SECOND SON was named after the MOTHER,s FATHER The THIRD SON was named after the FATHER The FIRST DAUGHTER was named after the MOTHER,s MOTHER The SECOND DAUGHTER was named after the FATHER,s MOTHER The THIRD DAUGHTER was named after the MOTHER . . When she died my sister and I were surprised to find out she was born in Cambridgeshire cos we'd always understood she was from Hampshire. We found her family was from Hampshire so we don't know why she was born in East Anglia - but the really amazing thing was that we found an ancestor (can't remember how far back) was a farm bailiff on a farm about 6 miles from where we live in Dorset!
Title: Re: Genealogy Post by: gsxbobber on July 03, 2013, 02:44:18 PM It took me 5 years of research and most importantly cross referencing all the information i found i could still do a lot more ,i manged to get back to the 1600s with lot of patience.

I now know that my troublesome back is thanks to my great great grand dad who was a miner! I'll continue digging up my past (pun intended) but that now means scouring the country for parish records.
