Title: Wire gauge questions
Post by: topconker on May 04, 2013, 02:39:12 PM
I'm doing a spot of rewiring on the trike and a bit confused on wire sizes.
Is 14 gauge smaller than 28 gauge or have I got it around the wrong way?
Also what amps are they rated for, I can't find any info on the web that make s sense to a poor old b+gger like me.

You have to be careful about talking about wire gauge. For individual wire or for that matter sheet steel wire gauge is a thickness measurement, the larger the number the smaller the wire. With electrical cable the number usually stands for the number of strands ie. 14/0.3 is 14 strands of 0.3mm dia. wire, this is rated at 8 amp. 28/0.3 is 17amp, 9/0.3 is 5amp
Americans use a slightly different nomenclature they use gauge, 18g =8 amp 14g=17amp 12g=25 amp
Hope this helps
