Title: electrolytic de-rusting
Post by: scannerzer on February 03, 2013, 11:28:17 AM
nothing done to the trike this weekend and still waiting on parts for the bike
so had a go at electrolytic rust removal.

things you need

washing soda crystals
plastic bucket
battery charger or 12v power supply
hook up wire
a sacrificial piece of metal

basiclly add 1 table spoon of washing soda crystal's to a gallon of water in a plastic bucket
and stir

suspend the sacrifical piece in the water connected to the + side of the battery charger
but do not let the connection touch the water

suspend the part you want to remove the rust from in the water and connect ot the - of the
battery charger this can touch the water

switch on the charger and you should see bubbles forming in the water,if not you have a bad connection

leave it in a well ventalated area for a few hours and see how it goes, we tried it on a piece of
rusty angle iron and it worked well,if you move the pieces closer together be sure to check the
amps on the battery charger, closer = more amps

sorry forgot to photograph the piece before we put it in the bucket but it was pretty rusty

this was the current drawn with the pieces at opposite sides of the bucket so a 4 amp charger is fine

after, all surface rust removed some pits still evident

hope i'm not re covering some thing thats already been on here but i haven't seen anything

Spent the last six months messing with rust removal my totally unscientific totally unprofessional conclusion for what its worth. Molasses  8) 8) 8) 8) 9 parts water to 1 part molasses.   1 word to describe this method Awesome!.

Ah ha, science stuff :D   does the amount of washing soda crystals make a difference,  ie;  will a stronger mix give a better result?

i thought the same   but no it doesnt put as much as you want in and it will do the exactly the same
this method is great for petrol tanks to get rid of the rust out of a tank that has been lying for a bit then rinse out a couple of times then with petrol and job is a good one
