Title: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on January 29, 2013, 09:23:47 PM just pulled my suzuki ls 650 savage from it's winter hibernation
(http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/1201210594.jpg) and it seems to have developed an unusual oil leak from the 2 lower footpeg/engine mounts .does anyone know if there are O rings or oil seals in here,if i need parts i'd like to have them to hand before taking it apart. (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/F81E5FC6-5012-45AE-B015-AF0CE08BD026-15175-00001DDABC43E3F2.jpg) also the reason for pulling it out in the first place was to inspect the timing chain tensioner as they are prone to fail with a lot less miles on than mine has,ther is a mod on the savage forum to extend the tensioner but i wonder if anyone on here has tried it thanks eddie Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: Olds on January 30, 2013, 04:24:50 AM Hi Eddie.
Try looking higher up as oil will always seem to come from the lowest points. If this has started while the bike is not being used then the usual areas are the gear change seal and gearbox output seal, Seeing as the RH side has oil dripping and thats not the lowest point when on the side stand, I would look at the clutch/timing chain cover gasket. Always liked the savage as there is so much potential. Seen them turned into chops, bobbers and street scramblers even a cafe racer. Sorry for ignorance but what is a street scrambler Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: TwistedPatience on January 30, 2013, 07:39:12 AM Sorry for ignorance but what is a street scrambler Dirt bike with road tyres ;D Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on January 30, 2013, 07:34:01 PM Thanks for the replys guys
yes ON they are very popular for modding I'd love to bob this one but it's in quite good shape I just had it resprayed last year but it needs a back mudguard and that might be my reason as it needs changed anyway but Lesley loves it the way it is...the long and short of it is I'm too indecisive, if I do I post the build. the cafe racer is very big in the states where a kit is available but I don't see many over here at all Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on January 31, 2013, 10:36:50 PM got the engine caseing split tonight and i'm glad i didn't put of any longer
the plunger on the tensioner is at almost full travel max recommended is 17mm mines about 18 :o a recognised mod for this is to extend the tensioner by welding a tab on the end and drilling a new hole to mount the guide so thats probably the way i'll go with it also the oil leak does seem to come from the bolt as higher up on the engine is dirty but dry apparently this bolt needs to be done up really tightly to stop this form happining (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/B229F45A-A1AD-49AB-AB10-18FF928F7366-15464-00001E2261EC9BBA.jpg) (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/9C32FA9D-3773-4618-A87C-C0DF5E6841F7-15464-00001E22DD88B6DA.jpg) (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/4BDC3B78-E31C-49DB-809C-C3DE28807EA2-15464-00001E22F82D4947.jpg) (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/D0FF36D5-1570-4019-AAD8-4F94AAD98C2A-15464-00001E230C11BEDD.jpg) this is the tensioner in bits ready for it's new extension (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/A9126B7B-7BD7-48EE-AF10-B784C4A3CE4E-15464-00001E2323F657AD.jpg) Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on January 31, 2013, 10:43:12 PM I also have a problem with clutch slip which is apparently caused by the wrong
type of oil. i have run it on 10/40 since i got it 7 years ago and have always had the problem It needs an oil with a zddp of 1250 or more and apparently 10/40 mo2 spec is only about 800 does anyone know of a suilable oil or additive or hend how to find this info out about an oil. I'v asked our oil suppliers at work and they have never heard of this zddp telling me it is an americanisim and not to worry about it thanks eddie Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: fifer on January 31, 2013, 11:56:11 PM Some info on zddp at ;

Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on February 04, 2013, 08:26:00 PM there's a little bit of wear on the teeth of the tensioner shown bottom right,just in front of the machined
area. does anyone think this would be a problem or suggest a way of cleaning them up (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/4E6386FE-8E41-494A-BA88-891486824152-16127-00001F8590467F51_zpsbe30fc5c.jpg) thanks eddie Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on February 15, 2013, 10:11:55 PM (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/C19E2E3E-5922-4049-B869-C9EDFBC02F13-637-0000010810CB3D75_zps8a85f462.jpg)

from the wear on the side and teeth and also a mark on one of the gears. this is on a bike with only 22,000 miles on it and which i have owned for 8 years so this must have happened before that when i got the bike it ad about 15,000 on it so BEWARE anyone with a savage,check you timing chain tensioner at least every 5,000 miles anyway modded now and here's the pics (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/771AF897-B515-45AD-8134-71C00A4AFFE8-637-000001F49D363411_zpsba26b853.jpg) (http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/0453D503-6612-4D8C-9DD6-8F47EFE5A54C-637-000001F4B6B38DB6_zps9fd087d2.jpg) Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: nabsim on February 17, 2013, 12:31:56 PM Doesn't that seem excessive for such a low mileage ? Unless you can see a reason I would think the chain is rubbish to have stretched so much on such a low mileage. If it is wouldn't you be better replacing it?
Title: Re: oil leak on ls 650 Post by: scannerzer on February 17, 2013, 06:23:58 PM Hi Nabsim
it seems to be a design issue with the tensioner my chain has about .25 inch of play,the accepted max is .75 so this modded tensioner is surposed to give the chain it's full life.I will now however be keeping a close eye on it to see how this play's out. According to the guys on the savage forum in the states it's not unknown for the tensioner to eject at between 5 and 10 thousand miles especially if it has been used a lot on short journey's,a fact possibly bourn out by the appearance of my tensioner |
