Im a morning insomniac. Dont matter what time I got to bed I just cant sleep past 3am. So I surf as its the only quiet thing I know how to do.. Anyway I digress from the title. Just about every topic I have read on here so far has changed topic in about 3 or 4 posts. Usually going down hill or turning to sex of one sort or another. The usual slagging appears around post 6 and by post 10 its sometimes back on track.
Why does this happen on forums?????
Just curious and wondering where this ones gonna go  :D

I have noticed the same thing. Maybe it's to do with starting a topic in the wrong section ;)
I believe it is the same as pub or party conversations involving a several people, who may not know each other very well, tends to happen when someone joins in, it's a form of 'ice breaker', can also happen when a conversation stalls or to lighten the mood if things get a bit serious.

BTW I am also an early riser, usually between 3.30 and 5.00. Usually end up working in the garage if it's not too cold but not allowed to use machinery or hammer things :(

Hmmm, think I need to to SpecSavers as I haven't noticed much reference to sex, maybe it me age :)

Again with slagging off, I would say this is one of the very few forums where it is very rare for someone to get slagged off. Must admit if some of what I put on forums was taken out if the context it was meant it wouldn't look good, my mind doesn't seem to work the same as a lot of other peeps.

Then again I have used chat rooms, forums (or bulletin boards as they were known previously) since early to mid 90's and most likely look for the humour (or sarcasm maybe) in a post.

As to threads going off topic I think it can quite often open up and present new ideas. I know I am guilty of doing this and look back at some threads and think it should be edited out. Overall I think there is more benefit by letting threads go off topic but ideally the original poster should be able to remove the of topic comments if they want to. Not sure that's always possible though and a click of the wrong button would mean they lost the lot so may not be a good idea :)

Can't remember but anyone fairly new to this forum will surely learn pretty quickly that the slagging off that goes on here is usually done with a smile - only because we know how the place works we don't usually feel the need to use a 'smilie' to indicate that it's in fun - cos people know that anyway!

- making up stories about other monkeys  and spreading them around the workshop
- teasing monkeys  about their names or using nicknames
- saying unkind things about a member of someone elses family
- laughing at monkeys  when they can't do something you can do.

As the sole administrator here, I have the power to pull any posts that might offend, but to be honest, it's pretty rare that I have to. Sometimes someone will ask me to edit a thread if they think it's wandered too far off topic, but that's about all. We do pride ourselves on being an attitude free, family friendly, "fluffy" little forum. Occasionally someone will join who doesn't really fit in with that, but they usually leave of their own accord before I have to step in.
I'd like to think we all help each other out where we can & I certainly learn as much as I impart to others, but we don't take it too seriously.

I think that it's a very complex issue but I think on many other forums it's about having another life that is not your own.

People seem to like the anonimity of the net and it means that they can shout and be rude to be people or just talk about things they can't or would not talk about face to face.

On here and Britchopper it's pretty calm but many other sites are infested with mindless twaddle and insults.

I think it reflects society and the fact that for the majority of people they find their life is not what they wanted it to be but don't have the strength of character to do something about it so inflict that frustration onto others.

Over the past 15 years through a series of life changing situations I've had to sit and keep my mouth shut and ears switched on to people behaving in an appaling manner and not react and also look at myself and make changes.

Not reacting is probably the hardest thing to do when you would normally be offended by someones comment but you learn it does not really matter what anyone else thinks.... Just what you think.

To Paraphrase a famous quote by someone or other.

"Is it better to say nothing and let people think you are an idiot or open your mouth and remove all doubt"

As for the sex side of things..... Who knows???  I'd rather be doing it than talking about it!  ;D

When I said slagging off I did mean in fun. Every forum I visit are different. Some are so serious that you dare not put a foot outa place or you get chastised. Others like this one are much more fun but still manage to get the point across, that's why I like MMM so much. Friendly banter with a technical  side to it. Sorted  :)
