Title: Nearly minus 1.5 Monkeys
Post by: andyrennison on August 28, 2012, 03:34:29 PM
Well, we have a tail to tell and no mistake. We have been on holiday in Turkey for a week. Last day was a 2 houir transfer back to the airport and we pushed the boat out a little and booked a private ar rather than go by the coach.

Pick up at 11.00pm, meant to be at Dalaman airport by 1.00 am today. So we are all in the car asleep (Me, Cath and Will). Unfortunately, so was the driver :(

Bl**dy big bang and jolt wakes me up to find windscreen glass cascading down on me, and the car completely out of control somewhere it should not be on the multilane motoray going into dalaman.

To cut a longer story short the driver went to sleep, drifted onto the central resevation, hit the kerb mounted the centre, then hit a road sign before continuing on the wrong carriageway against traffic - all at about 50mph we think.

My arms are cut with the glass, Cath has strained her neck (previous spine fusion up there already), and Will has pulled his middle back. Thank God for seatbelts, at least the worst is the seatbelt burns Cath has on her chest, and I have offered to rub em better  :P !

Thanks again to everyone for the kind comments. Yes, we are returning to what passes for normal in the rennie household now, but an experience we wont forget in a hurry. As for insurance, well, we will see. We havent suffered any tangible loss, so i think there will be nothing to come from there. Just glad to all be ok, thats enough for me.

One thing I would say is that without seatbelts the outcome would have been very different. I know they are not always required in some foreign countries, but this proves the point, its worth wearing them :)

Yeah!  As far as I can make out we hit a road sign (the front bumper was stoved in on the passenger side) - I think it either pivoted or bent and came down on the roof. That gives you an indication of the speed we must have been doing. I was waking ang going back to sleep, and the speedo was usually showing about 120Kmph - but I can't think we were going that fast when we hit the central kerb or we would have taken off into the air or flipped.
