Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:08:17 PM O.K, here's my current build. Check the info on the bottom of the pics -it's been sat in this barn, alongside my missus, Taz's, '69 Dodge Charger restoration, for at least 2 years. It's actually been almost finished for maybe 7 or 8 years!
Standard Reliant Rialto engine & gearbox, home-built hardtail frame, locally machined aluminium "slab" yokes, (extensively hand-filed afterwards by me), Suzuki Savage forks, beefed up with Harley progressive springs, Honda Superdream "Comstar" front wheel, Reliant rear axle with MMMotors disc brake conversion, aftermarket alloy rear wheels with slots milled in the spokes to mimic the front wheel, Harley Sportster fuel tank with pop-up filler cap, home-built handlebars, hydraulically operated clutch arm & linked brakes etc, etc. Several things I plan to change, including the sloppy, vague gearstick & the long linking rods between the pedals & the master cylinders, but I'm still looking forward to riding this when it's finally done. Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:11:52 PM Same trike, several years previously, outside the rented garage I built it in, before I moved from Hampshire to Surrey.

Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:17:19 PM My previous trike. Same colour, same engine, g/box, back axle, forks & wheels, but with a Ford Fiesta radiator mounted across the back of the frame, with the coolant running directly inside the frame rails. The hardtail is a different design to accomodate the rad'. The speedo's set into the top of the tank. I started by modifying a standard steel Sportster tank, adding a tail to it to follow the frame line, but then had a copy made in aluminium by John Williams of The Tank Shop. Limited run cast aluminium rocker cover, produced by the Reliant owners club. The gearchange comes up through the nose of the saddle.

Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:23:09 PM Flap's orange "Flapster". Built between us while I was still riding the rear radiatored one. He won the big "QuickBob" fuel tank in the NCC Diamond Day bike show raffle for a quid. I made his frame as simple as I could -then liked it so much I promptly pulled mine apart & started rebuilding it.
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:25:43 PM I sold the frame, bars, tank etc to SkaMan, who rebuilt it with a Suzuki front end, (GS850 I think), & Rover rear wheels. It became "Blue Job".

Real nasty pic about 34 in on that lol nearly spat me drink out Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:30:45 PM SkaMan's brother in law, Muffin, was a Postman, same as me. We built him this black one.
He's into Napoelonic re-enactment & added a removable axe as a passenger backrest. Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:32:20 PM He still has it & is rebuilding the engine for the millionth time -not because they're unreliable, but because he rides like a complete nutter. :P
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: dave 67 on May 30, 2012, 08:32:36 PM Love the low bobber style
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:36:18 PM I just like them as simple as possible. Sometimes referred to as chopper styled.
Muffin's frame before it was powder-coated. Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: dave 67 on May 30, 2012, 08:40:56 PM I just like them as simple as possible. Sometimes referred to as chopper styled. Muffin's frame before it was powder-coated. Very nice andy Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:45:11 PM You can see the starter motor cover, made from a section of 2" tube, built into the far side of the frame. It covers the exposed pinnion gear as Mr Muffin wanted the footpegs tucked back behind the engine & I didn't want him winding his trouser leg into the motor.
My first Reliant. Fuel tank was a steel box at the back, double top frame tubes, water running through the frame again. Known as Special Delivery because I'm a Postie & it was pillarbox red. In the days when I used to go to the gym 7 nights a week! Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 08:50:59 PM A few non Reliant ones. Might still help you decide your style though.
My first ever trike. An XS750 Yamaha. Shaft drive triple. I sold it to a disabled guy from Lytham St Annes, near Blackpool. I actually built this for my girlfriend at the time & built a second one for myself, with identical frame, forks, narrowed Reliant axle etc, but bigger tank, flat bars & wider rear wheels. Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: one arm bandit on May 30, 2012, 08:54:29 PM this is my pain suffering and tears not an mmm frame and 1"cds

I'd recommend building a proper frame jig though.
My Yam' trike was getting on for 20 years ago. Amazingly, I was contacted completely out of the blue last year by the present owner, who's rebuilding it. Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 09:02:29 PM Another previous girlfriend, another trike. This time a Suzuki GS850. This was sold before it was finished to a guy from Torquay who planned to swap the GS motor for a BMW twin. Rear wheels are the pair left over from SkaMan's trike. You can see the beginnings of my current green Reliant frame on the red bike lift in the second photo. Pics from the Bath & West show -that's my Jaguar sofa in the background!
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 09:06:51 PM The Vauxhall Chevette auto trike we started building for former forum member SaddleBags. Think ByzMax may have ended up with this one. Not my workshop -Mr Bags is an engineer.
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 09:08:44 PM TrikerPete on the right & That Manky Bloke on the left. We'd been corresponding by email for quite a while cos he wanted to build a water-in-frame Reliant like mine. This was the day we finally met.
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: Manky Monkey on May 30, 2012, 09:11:50 PM The current girlfriend's, (Tazet's), current Reliant. Started a couple of years ago, but not progressed beyond this yet. Huge girder forks hold a Yamaha V Max rear wheel & were built by former forum member FLC. Rear wheels are widened Morris Minor. This'll be grey when it's finished.
Title: Re: Reliant trikes Post by: trikerpete on June 02, 2012, 02:03:30 PM I'd built a few trikes, not all Reliants, before meeting up with our leader, I'll try and sort some photos.
