Title: NSRA Southern Swapmeet 4th March '12
Post by: Chevy Rick on March 04, 2012, 03:01:48 PM
Left home at 5.00am this morning for the swapmeet, very bad weather and 50mph on some of the motorway made for a long journey, got there in good time before all the crowds rolled up.
Was not in photo mode so just a few, the Ford Model A on the trailer for sale was real eye candy just had to drag myself away £14k, still can't grumble what did put a smile on my face was getting a brand new gas tank for Nadine (49 Chevy) for a stolen price well below retail and a few other goodies at knock down prices.
The Chevy Corvair Greenbrier is a rare find in this country not a bad price I thought.
Good to see Shaun but he was the only Manky Monkey I saw, thought of you Andy at work tomorrow as I pasted Basingstoke, the SNOW was coming down so heavy cars on the motorway came to a standstill, memo put wooly hat and sledge in the car for tomorrows deliveries. When I got back to the New Forest the sun was out, what a fun day.

We looked out for you Rick but didn't see you.
Lunatic & new workshop regular, Chris drove over from Basingstoke, Hampshire & picked me up from Surrey on the way, before heading round the M25 to darkest Essex. We actually arrived more or less as the gates were opening for a change. Bumped into PantherShaun within the first 10 minutes & he'd already bought half a dozen parts for various projects.
A slow start to the day, with less punters out bargain hunting, (maybe because of the current economic situation, or because of the dire weather forcasts for the day), but by mid day things had picked up & the queues for the burger vans were as long as ever. Essex Arena Raceway's possibly the coldest place on the planet at this time of year, but was possibly sub tropical this time around, only turning chillier & wetter as we were preparing to leave.
A very modest haul of purchases for us, with Chris finding a front bumper assembly for his Morris Minor, plus a pulley for his Rover V8 & a metre of pre-formed "tuck n roll" upholstery material & a magazine for me. Nice to see our good friends Ian of Wyliez Autos & Tino of Tinos Customs among others.
Lots of familiar faces as the rodding community emerges from it's Winter hibernation.
A few snaps.

Lunatic's new shop truck? Nope, this one had travelled from Belgium. Quite a few foreign accents among the crowds, including a coachload of German hotrodders.
Wonder what the cab fare from New York City came to?

This Pop based pick-up changes it's style almost every year. Last time I saw it, it was carrying a coffin in the pick-up bed.

Lots of Pops. Britain's archetypal hotrod.

Probably the second most popular basis for a first rod is a fibreglass, turtle decked, '27 T roadster. I counted half a dozen bodies at the meet today, as well as at least one '32 model B.

Shiney new fibreglass, or rusty old steel? Opinions are divided on what makes a true hotrod.

Some punters can see potential where others see only scrap metal.

One of Forum member Derek's two Diamond T trucks & a Ford F100 next to Tino's pitch.

Dodge van. Apparently the 70s van scene's making a comeback. I've always liked the shape of these.

The old Burnham Autos pick-up, now running a turbo diesel engine.

Spikey Simon in his air bagged "Zombie Wagon". By this time the rain was starting to come down -a soggy lens makes fuzzy photos.

One of the first meets of the year, so as much a chance to meet up with old friends as a serious buying trip.
All in all, not a bad morning out for the 7 quid entry fee.

Great photos Andy I was more in a buying mode today, the hunt for a gas tank has been going on since end of last year, so pleased to find one today, I thought there were less stalls than other years.

Taken from 200 yards away from the window of the car as we drove out.
Looks like a Ford Pop with a Ford Prefect or Pilot nose?
Face it Bobbi, you're a closet hotrodder!  :)
Yeah definitely less stalls this time, but there's less money about at the moment & I guess the rocketting cost of keeping a big gas guzzling car on the road's bound to impact on a lifestyle that literally needs fuel to survive. Scotty the hotrod haulier's just fitted a diesel taxi engine in his 40s Chevy sedan, just so he can keep on driving it.
