Title: one for fifer me thinks..........Starter motor swop Post by: RODeo on February 25, 2012, 05:22:13 PM Can I convert from new type pre engaged s/motor to old type Inertia by just changing the engine back plate?(seen your info to swop the other way on R3W) Do I use the flywheel /clutch for the early type s/motor as well,or is there some incompatibility ?

Here,s one I did earlier ;D Click on photo to enlarge (http://i423.photobucket.com/albums/pp316/fifer3w/STARTER%20MOTORS/th_OLDSTYLEINERTIASTARTERFITTEDINENGIN.jpg) (http://s423.photobucket.com/albums/pp316/fifer3w/STARTER%20MOTORS/?action=view¤t=OLDSTYLEINERTIASTARTERFITTEDINENGIN.jpg) . You will need to swap the flywheel due to the different teeth but you might be able to use your old clutch if they are the carbon thrust type I had an 1989 engine with the carbon thrust clutch , a bu***ed pre-engaged starter and the gearbox was also b***ed . As I did not have another pre engaged gearbox or another pre engaged starter motor but had about 6 inertia type gearboxes lying about and a new inertia starter motor it was a no brainer decision . On the starter motor / gearbox swap I did on that one above all I did was change the flywheel and clutch but I did not change the back plate and ALL I had to do was slot the holes . I changed the box with the engine still in the car and then found that the holes in the pre engaged starter are smaller spaced than the 5 inch ? holes on the inertia starter so I used a Dremel to slot the plate insitu . I then went into my hut and gave myself a darn good thrashing :-[ You will need to fit a separate starter solenoid as per Click on photo to enlarge (http://i423.photobucket.com/albums/pp316/fifer3w/STARTER%20MOTORS/th_OLDSTYLESOLENOIDFORINERTIASTARTERFI.jpg) (http://s423.photobucket.com/albums/pp316/fifer3w/STARTER%20MOTORS/?action=view¤t=OLDSTYLESOLENOIDFORINERTIASTARTERFI.jpg) . Swop the flywheel then , before fitting the replacement gearbox , try the new inertia starter on and see what you have to do to make it fit . . .
