Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: Manky Monkey on November 20, 2011, 03:20:27 PM Running costs for the site are about 200 quid a year, but all paid up at the moment, thanks.
If you've been with us for a while you'll know we had a major problem last year when we contracted a virus. Ended up having to lose a chunk of the forum posts & photos & eventually had to disable access to the main site until we could sort it -well, we still haven't got everything up & running again, but have a limited site for the time being: http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/introtempoffline.html The rest of the old site's still out there in the ether, we've just altered the homepage to take you to the new, limited version of it. However, if you've saved a page of the old site to your Favourites List, or follow an old link from another source, you can still access it. As far as we know it's clean -no viruses -but we don't want to link it back here until we know for certain, which means screening every page & every photo. Over 5 years worth of photo galleries that have to be gone through, one pic at at time. I took a chance a couple of days ago & posted a link to a page on my old Reliant trikes in a thread in the Trike Tech section of the forum, concerning rear mounted radiators. I've since removed my post, but I don't think the forum programme liked the link -we've been having problems with internal server errors since then. Might be just coincidence, but I'm guessing I've shot myself in the foot & caused the problem myself. As I'm sure you've guessed, I'm not particularly computer literate. For the most part this place runs itself, but forums are notoriously prone to problems. The site was originally set up on my behalf by "Yoda", a webby genius up in the Midlands. When I told him I wanted a forum, he warned me that at some point it'd be hacked & it was virtually guaranteed to break on a regular basis. Of course, he was right! I haven't heard from him in a while & think he may have changed his email address. BG, if you've had contact with him recently, I'd appreciate you passing a link to this thread on to him please. Last time we had a major problem we ended up having to back-date the forum to a point before the problem occurred, losing all the posts in between. At worst, we'll have to do that again, but hopefully not. In the meantime, please be patient. :) Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: steveb263 on November 20, 2011, 08:14:20 PM had probs with the site yesterday and today up until about 7.00pm then started working fine again .

I don't see why you have got to keep dipping into your own pockets to keep this site going when so many of us enjoy the information and banter going on. I for one didn't know you had to pay for the upkeep of this great site,i for one am willing to chip into the pot to keep it going or for an upgrade Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: Manky Monkey on November 20, 2011, 10:18:45 PM Don't be daft! :)
As always, I appreciate the offers guys -this comes up on a regular basis -but it's a hobby for me too. I enjoy this, (when it isn't broken). If I weren't spending my pocket money on MMMotors, I'd be blowing it all on Tizer & Aztec bars. It's my 50th birthday in February, (hint, hint!), so I'm aiming to get the full site up & running again by then, with maybe a bit of a face lift. Maybe. So might be looking for someone with website skills, (genuine skill, not just someone who thinks they could do it), to give up some time to sort it out. You don't have to be gift wrapped though. Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: BikerGran on November 21, 2011, 12:36:51 AM Seems to be sorted from this end!
I don't think Yoda's in a position to do much about it at present. Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: nabsim on November 22, 2011, 01:43:04 PM I have a forum Andy but I have restricted membership to prevent hackers. Although computers/systems is my job I am at the very bottom of the ladder when it comes to forums and web sites, can get them up and running but if they break I doubt I am much different to you. I will be suprised if we dont have someone on here that is a bit handy with them though. If you get stuck I will have a look but like I say I am a novice at that bit.
I know the chipping in thing comes up now and then and I know all the downsides of having paying 'members'. I do think though if peeps want to chip in on the understanding they are treated exactly the same as anyone else I reckon you should take it, (preferably done annonymously so nobody feels bad about not being able to contribute). Last thing MMM needs is a class system, it just works so well as it is ;) Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: BikerGran on November 22, 2011, 02:29:03 PM I agree - those of us who can would love to chip in whatever we can afford. I can understand why Andy doesn't want that - but we'd be lost without this forum, there's no other like it!
Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: merv on November 22, 2011, 04:12:29 PM I'm with BikerGran
A few years a go i saw a nice looking trike which got me thinking ( i know thinking is dangres ::) ;D ) i like a trike. The way the trike looked i thought i could make one myself, so i started looking around the internet to see what i could find on trikes and came across this site quite by accident and i haven't left. Like BikerGran says there's nothing like it Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: thebigdogsix on November 22, 2011, 07:14:16 PM Last thing MMM needs is a class system
Speak for yourself i want to be king of all manky world ;D Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: Manky Monkey on November 22, 2011, 09:52:14 PM Muppets! :-*
Nabs, we don't have a restricted membership policy as some sites do, but do run a few checks on any applicant that looks iffy. We get a couple of computerised hits a month, usually with user-names that are completely random strings of letters & numbers. We check 'em through a few other sites & if we're still in doubt, send an email asking them to confirm they're genuine & not computer generated -so if you get that email, don't take it personally! Not fool proof but it weeds out most of the spam ones. The virus was introduced through the forum, via an avatar that contained hidden script. That's why we now restrict use of avatars to established members. Most viruses are free roaming, not targetted at particular sites. We were just unlucky enough to be using a forum programme with loopholes that allowed it in. I am Lord of all I survey! ...yeah, right! :P Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: Cabman77 on November 23, 2011, 11:41:33 AM That explains why it took about 3 months to be allowed on..............you obviously thought I looked a bit iffy.........................proof that the system works.....sort of ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: nabsim on November 23, 2011, 01:41:20 PM Thats the way I do it Andy, only cos we started getting literally hundreds of fictitous members a week. Luckily the forum software I use (SMF) has been okay for me so far, I do apply all the updates as soon as they come out though and use a standard theme so I dont have to worry about an update breaking it.
If it was caused by script running from an avatar did you ask your hosting company if they could sort the problem for you? No idea if they could or would though, just thinking out loud. Will be some little s**te sat somewhere thinking they have done a great job because their script worked as well. Barstewards aint they. Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: dobber on November 23, 2011, 05:04:18 PM do they do it out of shear badness or do they gain something from it. if there that clued up why dont they do it for a living?. never understood it.
Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: BikerGran on November 23, 2011, 08:24:38 PM They just do it because they can. An internet version of graffiti, if you like.
Title: Re: Anyone else finding the forum slow to load? Post by: Manky Monkey on November 23, 2011, 10:00:09 PM The hosting company took us offline & didn't reinstate our account until we'd cleared the virus -which is entirely understandable. It was our problem, not theirs. We try to keep things as casual & welcoming as we can here, but there's always stuff going on behind the scenes!
