Title: Rattly Clutch?

I have a 2004 Polo 1.4 with a very noisy clutch and/or Gearbox, which goes completely quiet when the clutch is depressed, any ideas?.... ??? ???..Morrag

it could be the release bearing or if it's a diesel maybe the dual mass flywheel

Gearbox 1st motion shaft input bearing - I replaced loads on Rover 200/25s (peugeot gearbox). Normally releaseearings get noisy when you press clutch, not the other way around.

Thanks guys, first motion shaft bearings were my "1st choice" I admit, so....advice appreciated, Morrag

If it's ok in all gears when moving, no noise, it's not a bearing, more likely to be the reverse idler gear as it has no load on it.
A common complaint, but will cause no harm, gear is just chattering on the teeth.
Check gear oil level and if ok ignore.
Bit for piece of mind, check colour of oil in the box, should be clean,  silver/grey with metalic if there was a problem.

Many thanks for the sage advice, I shall check out the noise levels in the gears, tomorrow "dr"...Morrag
