Ive seen them break off road when the car starts bouncing then suddenly gets grip! I reckon take the diff out would be step one. Then hit it with a big hammer! Grin

I'm defiantly going to hit it with a big hammer Grin I've never seen one brake on the road before with a standard diesel engine in, Its usually the V8's that break 'em.

Flap proves yet again that, given enough time, he can break just about anything. Good job you had 4 wheel drive to get you home.

A friend of mine threw 2 pistons through the block on a v8 landie, then managed to drive it home! Was glowing nicely when he got back what with it having no coolant! Shocked

Probably no help at all, but if you use nitro-glyserine..............

I hope you get it fixed

there be two types of diff in them there rand lovers! at a guess id say you probably got the most common type! does it have a removable cover on the rear end of the diff housing??? if it does,nt you should be able to remove the opposite halfshaft and pass a long bar down the tube and through the diff and drift the broken part out! if you have the other type its a bit more complicated! too long to type here but i,ll come up and do it if ya get stuck!!! by the way it looks like that shaft was knacked from the factory look at the oil stained shaft and the the clean break!! Shocked

No removable cover on the back, The diff pan's welded on. Will try and push it out as you said but I've think I'll have to take the diff out. I've no idea why it broke I presume its been in there for 30 years but it does look odd.
