Post by: Blackpig on January 09, 2013, 07:41:56 PM
It seems our leader is being a bit slow this year, so I am going to start the ball rolling, who else is coming?

Manky - Pop (under it's own steam)
Brock - T.B.A

Sorry I put it on the events calendar and assumed it would include the date.

2nd show Rick, we took it to Pickets Piece 2 years ago, hoping to drive it more this year.

Hi Les.  ;)
Yup, one way or another, we'll be there as usual. Haven't received the entry form yet, but we always seem to be allocated the same size pitch in the same position every year. So if you've been before, we'll probably be in the same spot again. This year we're gonna get organised!
Every year I say I'd love to put a bit more pizazz into our display, but I'm not really sure how -maybe raise a couple of the bikes or trikes up on plinths of some kind or better information displays with each vehicle. A more organised parking arrangement for the displays would be good, (we often have vehicles that have to leave early, meaning we're left with big holes in our line-up, so maybe this time we insist people stay until the 5.0.clock official finish time?) Don't know, but open to suggestions.
We also need a better way to display the website banners. The metal poles we used last year were discarded in my move from Taz's cottage a few weeks ago. I'd love to have 2 life size monkeys, sitting on the ground either side of the pitch, holding the banners in open arms. Anyone got any ideas for doing that? Or maybe strung between "palm trees"? We've got a couple of months, so get thinking people.

I'm sure some of the chaps from Loony's workshop will bring projects along. I'll throw in my XS650 Yam chop too.

maybe raise a couple of the bikes or trikes up on plinths of some kind
- what about car ramps to run the front end of trikes up?

better information displays with each vehicle
- if we started now, and people sent me the info about their vehicles, I wouldn't mind typing up the info on sheets with the Manky logo at the top, then I could bring them along on the day, or even email them to you or someone in case I don't get there.

Or maybe strung between "palm trees"?
Damn, I just dumped a couple of 'carpet roll' type thingies that my new blinds came in, would have made great palm trees - problem to transport though.

Yeah, I was wondering about raising a couple of vehicles up just to add some variety to the display, rather than just parking in rows. If we did it just for motorcycles, it wouldn't take a lot to knock up a wooden frame topped with a sheet of ply or thin MDF, maybe a foot off the ground. Bikes could be physically lifted that high between a couple of us. Just trying to think of ways of adding a bit more visual impact.
The guy who prints our merchandise can print banners & posters, so maybe just a slightly larger version of the A4 info sheets we've used in the past. Could include a photo of the owner, or the vehicle being ridden/driven? Would be nice to have a bit more info than just "I built it" this time too!

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 12th May 2013
Post by: BikerGran on January 10, 2013, 08:07:55 PM
I would say - from experience - that there's a danger in putting bikes up on a plinth.  Unless you find some way of securing them VERY firmly, when some idiot member of the public knocks them off and damages either the bike, the vehicle next to it, or themselves - where's your public liability insurance?  Many shows insist that all exhibitors have their own - is there nothing about it on the entry form?

It's VERY expensive!  Trying to sort some out for our club at present, even getting it through MAG it's £198 (that's for a year not a single evnt, but still.....)

Trikes or 4-wheelers are less likely to topple.

That's why it needs to be typed up ahead.  I think it would be a bit pricy getting them printed as each would be a one-off.

Did we have bunting last year or did I imagine that?

Found 5 1/2 feet tall inflatable monkeys on Ebay for 17 quid!
Wonder if they could be tethered to the ground & made to hold the banners?

How about 5 6 foot tall palm trees for 50 quid?
Wonder how you'd hold them in place? Some of the ads say the base has a trough you can fill with water. Strong enough to hold a banner strung between 2 of 'em? Could tie them to a wooden stake I guess.

I quite like those!

Or these. 6 foot cut outs, printed both sides. Tenner each. Attached with a staple gun to a 4 foot wooden stake?
2 for each banner & one each side of the marquee entrance?

Andy, would it be OK if I had a bucket by the Pop/bike(s) to take donations for a couple of Hayley's charities? Also thinking of asking £1.00 a go to have a photo sitting in the Pop.. all to H's charities.

How could we say No Shaun. We've had a couple of vehicles in the past with adverts for members' vehicle businesses alongside them. As long as they're reasonably discreet & don't detract from it being a MMMotors pitch, it ain't a problem. Would be good to see you mate.

if all the members on site could be on the manky monkey pitch at a given/certain time,we could all meet and say hello, instead of missing peeps
and maybe ,,just maybe,, have a group photo,   :)

Andy, your right, its NOT, lol. Im a member of the American car club here and we meet every sunday at a Farmers bar (cafe). Loads of classics turn up as well. We also have loads of MK1 escorts running cossworth motors that are stupidly quick.

This is a 900 car local show, running from 11am to 5pm. All we really do is bung up a small marquee, park the vehicles in an apparently haphazard, yet actually very arty way, then sit about eating donuts all day.
I know money's tight & petrol ain't exactly cheap at the moment, so I don't want to encourage you guys to trek from the far corners of the country for just a few hours in beautiful Basingstoke -but you know we'd love to see you.
Assuming it's the same as previous years, all show vehicles have to be onsite by 10 -10.30, ready for the public to come in at 11. In practice though, the show's free & there's half a dozen entrances to the park where it's held, so punters are wandering about all the time. For the last couple of years, public parking has been in a nearby field, with a £2 parking fee, which goes to charity. Show vehicles enter free. No charge for people whether showing or viewing, so bring the family, bring the dog, bring a picnic. It'd be nice to have everyone there by, say, 9.30 ish, so we can sort the parking out. We tend to lose a few guys during the day who have to leave early for one reason or another, which leaves big gaps in our display. So if possible, I'd like everyone to actually stay till 5 this time please.
Some clubs seem to line their vehicles up then retire to their tents & keep themselves to themselves. We try to make ourselves accessible to the public & encourage them to ask questions & have a good look at everything. Unfinished vehicles seem to attract as much attention as the shiney ones -I think people are curious to see how a trike, chop or whatever is put together. We're the scruffy bunch in the corner with all the cool stuff!

No, you can get there earlier if you want to ;D

We're the scruffy bunch in the corner with all the cool stuff!
;D Definitely the most interesting of the displays if you're into things different.
Being as the show has free entry to the public, this is a very popular show, especially for those with family's.
For those who have never been before it's run by the Thornycroft Society and features displays, from small stationary engines, up to the the mighty ANTAR ( a personal favorite, because I went to school next to the factory).
So even if you can't show anything, try to come along if you can.

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 12th May 2013

Right people, time to get organised!
I had a letter from the show organisers today. Seems they sent a club stand entry form to me at my old Guildford address back in December -just when I was splitting up with Tanya. I've got a redirection for the mail set up now, but it must've fallen between me moving out & setting that up, so I never received it. Anyway, they just assumed we'd be attending so have allocated the same pitch as last year.
Bit of a change in policy this year though. The local council, who jointly run the show with the Thornycroft restoration group, want a registration number & insurance details for every vehicle attending. They've said that every year, but because a lot of our exhibits are unfinished projects, we've never bothered with it. The Thornycroft club take out public liability insurance that covers every vehicle anyway, so they shouldn't need individual details, but it keeps them happy.
So after a bit of a chat, they just want us to provide a list of registration numbers & insurance company name & policy number, for complete, road going vehicles only, not race bikes/cars or part built projects.
So we need to get our bottoms in gear & come up with a list. Same as always, all we do is turn up, struggle to put up a small marquee, park the vehicles in a vague semblance of order, then sit around, eating donuts & watching the World go by for the afternoon.
As we need to provide vehicle details, we can't take in waifs & strays who turn up on the day as we have in previous years, which might actually be a good thing. It'll mean it's just forum members, not friends & aquaintances from elsewhere.
I'd also like all vehicles to stay till the end of the show please -we usually lose a few during the afternoon, who have to leave early for various reasons. It leaves big gaps in our display & just looks a bit naff.
We need to get the entry form back in the next 3 or 4 weeks, so if you'd like to come along & can bring an interesting vehicle of any sort to display, 2, 3 or 4 wheeled, & can be onsite from about 10 in the morning, (or earlier if you want), till the official finish time of 5 in the afternoon, add your name & vehicle to the list please, but only if you can definitely make it. Thank you.  ;)

Manky            Ford Popular pick-up truck.

Yes please if you've got them Bobbi. I just need to write a list & hand it in.
Mike, they haven't asked for tow vehicle details, just show vehicles, (the organiser I spoke to mentioned trader's vans not being listed either). If you're not insured by then, you're an unfinished project, so no need to list it.  ;) It's just for vehicles actually driven or ridden onto the show field.

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 12th May 2013
Post by: BikerGran on March 27, 2013, 10:54:54 PM
Exactly - driven onto show field.  I think Mike's right and they will want details of towing vehicles, doesn't make sense otherwise.
Traders' vans would of course be covered by the trader's Public Liability insurance.

It's all 'Elf n Safety stuff, has to go in the risk assessment which will be demanded by the event's own insurers.

I believe that towing vehicles, just like traders vans, will be exempt.
The towing vehicle does not form part of the display, and it`s the display vehicles/exhibits that make up the show.
The organisers will only be interested in the exhibits and not how they are transported. Any transport vehicle will have it`s own insurance (or it would not be on the road) and any accident involving these will be sorted out via your own insurance company because the field will be `private property, public access`.
I would imagine that the list they require will be a `get out of jail free` card, as although the organisers will have an insurance policy in place, they will counter claim from your own individual insurance company`s  in the event of an accident involving a privately insured vehicle.

I hate the idea of Doc without his trike too but I do sympathise, hate to think what state I'd be in if I rode that far in this weather.  It's just not practical to have a trike as a daily driver, and for me, not practical to have one for the very few weekends I enjoyed (rather than endured) last year.

It's so cold I couldn't even get motivated to go - in the CAR - to Southampton to a bike show today.  I'm seriously thinking about selling Gertie, in fact I will if this summer is a s**t as last year, cos I simply can't ride when it's cold and wet.

Right. I double checked with one of the organisers today. The show's run in partnership between the local council & the Thornycroft preservation group. When I asked if towing vehicles needed to be listed with their insurance details he said For Gawd's sake, don't suggest that to the council! It'd be a logistical nightmare!
So it's just road going display vehicles -if it's ridden or driven into the show, they want to know your insurance company's name & your policy number. That's all. If you're bringing something unregistered or incomplete, they don't need to know.

It was a charity do at the Talking Heads pub in Portswood road.  Apparently the sun was shining there!  I guess they've taken the slot left vacant by the MAG show changing it's date (and venue).

The entry passes were hand delivered today, (one of the show organisers lives a couple of streets away from me). I haven't counted, but we usually get a couple of dozen. We can get more, but we don't get a bigger pitch.
So. Time to start getting organised & drawing up a list of vehicles. Only a few weeks away now guys. Who's coming?

It's looking a bit of a rat at the moment, but I'm hoping it'll get prettier as the Summer progresses!
It'll be nice to see you guys. The paperwork from the organisers say no vehicle movements between 10am & 4pm, so we need everyone to commit to staying till the end this time, (we keep losing guys halfway through the day, which leaves us with big gaps in our display).

As always there'll be some unfinished projects, but the punters seem to like those.

Dave, (Loony Senior), isn't really too worried about ever getting it on the road. He just likes to tinker with it once in a while. He's recently talked about building something else out of it though, maybe a Volksrod.

As long as I can hand the organisers a list of names before the show that's all that matters Bobbi. They don't want the details of towing vehicles, just show vehicles that are ridden/driven onto the showfield. So if you're towing your trike there you don't need to give any details.

That'd be great. I'll pass them on to her. Will be nice to meet you.
We're not organised at all this year. Absolutely nothing done yet. So if anyone wants to help out, feel free! When Taz & I split up, the metal A4 sized information boards we've used for the last couple of years got left behind. They've since been scrapped, so we need a way of displaying an A4 sized sheet of paper next to each vehicle, (just owner's name, vehicle model, any interesting features, that kind of thing). Maybe plywood boards tacked to a peg to push into the ground, something like that? Any ideas?
We should have either Loony's gazebo, as used in previous years, or Brock's race transporter lorry with it's pull out awning, but haven't got any seating, tables etc.
We need a way of displaying the website banners too. I'm thinking some of these. 6 foot cardboard cut out palm trees. Stapled to stakes, whacked into the ground, with hooks to hang the banners on. Needs a dry day & not too much wind of course. Ideas?
We also need to organise the vehicle line-up. Always seems to descend into chaos, so would be nice to have a plan -& someone to implement it.
Oh, & donuts. We definitely need donuts.

We've always used Loony's gazebo thingy, but it takes out crack erection team, (really ought to think of a better name for them), about an hour to wrestle it into submission. I swear it comes out a different size every year.
My brother's bringing his race transporter along, which usually has a large pull-out awning attached to it, which would be ideal. He & Mrs Brock aren't racing this year though & think it'd be too much hassle to fit & dismantle for one day. I hope to persuade them otherwise.
Cake? How much cake can you fit in the boot of your Galaxie?  ;D

Post by: Galaxie500 on May 02, 2013, 06:56:20 PM
My gazebo goes up in about 5 minutes, but it might be too small for everyone.
I think the galaxie will hold more cake than a whole bunch of manky monkeys could consume! :D

Post by: Manky Monkey on May 02, 2013, 11:22:46 PM
What?! It never rains here!
Got the gazebo covered. Hoping I can persuade my brother Brock to hook his race awning up to his race transporter lorry cos it's the quick, easy & actually quite cool option. If not, it'll be Loony's gazebo. Putting that up's become an event in it's own right.

Seem to remember Jason had to leave early last year? That leaves big holes in our line-up & looks kinda unprofessional, so would appreciate all entrants staying till the official 4.30 - 5.0.clock finishing time this year please.  ;)

Hi Steve. Welcome back!
The Basingstoke show's mainly classics, rather than customs. Around 900 vehicles, with lots of lorries, buses etc as it's organised by the Thornycroft vehicle preservation group, (they were Basingstoke's biggest employers for 80 years or more).
We don't do an awful lot during the day -it's really an excuse to meet up with other forum members & compare notes on projects, but if the weather's good, it's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. We'll be the scruffy lot in the corner making the place look untidy. You'll be very welcome.  ;)

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 12th May 2013

 :D
All vehicles to be onsite by 10.30  at the latest, but we'll be about from around 8 ish. The earlier you're there the better, especially the bigger cars, cos it saves shuffling people about later.
No real "seating plan" for the vehicles, but we'll probably park Brock's dragster on one front corner cos it'll attract lots of attention, & my pick-up on the other corner -not cos I own the site, but simply because it's got the website logo on the doors. I'd imagine the cars will go down either side from there, at 45 degrees to the front of the pitch, with trikes & bikes in the middle? Suggestions happily received though. Brock will bring the dragster in his race truck, which has seating, fridge etc, so we'll park that across the back with a gazebo/awning in front.
Every year I say I'd like to make more of an impact, but not sure what we can do to add more pzazz. Maybe a chorus line of high kicking forum members every hour?  :P  We had 2 drag cars a couple of years ago & fired them up a couple of times. We drew crowds from all over the park & they loved it. The marshals came over afterwards & said Please don't do that again. Oops.

It seems like the spark has failed, its got fuel. No time before Sunday to have proper look at it but not major problem as planning to tow it to Basingstoke anyway :)

Lucky the 500 has a large trunk  :)
Mrs Olds tells me I'm poorly and depressed.  Actually, the words she used were "sad, sick old git"
Does that qualify for cake?

 :D

As always, utterly disorganised here, so lots of running about to do today.
Yes, VooDoo, I'm sure we can squeeze in another couple of bikes, but not sure we'll have room for an ambulance too. All towing/carrying vehicles can be parked behind the pitch though.
The marshals usually just wave us through the gate on the day, but I've got a bunch of photo copied vehicle passses. If they ask to see one, give me a ring on 07952-509223 & I'll nip up to the gate with one. If you have any problems on the day, give me a shout on that number too.
The postcode for the Memorial Park where the show's held is RG21 4AH.
The War Memorial Park,
London Road, (opposite the Police Station),
Basingstoke,
Hants.
There are yellow Transport Festival signs out on the ringroad.
See you Sunday chaps.

Bugger. I was hoping you were coming down Mike, cos I need a trailer to get mine to the show! The Pop's not running either. Just cos it ain't driveable doesn't mean you can't show it! Most of the vehicles on our pitch will be unfinished projects.

It's all no go!

I may be bringing my Mike with me as a consolation - for him!  Cos his beloved Jag has to be dragged off to the workshop cos that won't go either!  And if it's very expensive..........  could be a sad outcome........   :-\

Show off!  8)
So long as we've got cake, we don't care about the weather!
The Basingstoke Monkeys are meeting at Loony's workshop at 8am to pick up the bikes, gazebo etc, (already loaded), then will go back for a second trip to load Chris's Moggy Minor & my Pop. So there should be someone in the park from 8.30 ish.
I've got a bunch of photo-copied vehicle passes. They don't usually bother with them, but if they ask to see one, give me a shout on 07952-509223 & I'll nip up to the gate with one. I asked for insurance details of any show vehicles being ridden or driven onto the site, but not everyone has given them. Might be an idea to scribble them on a scrap of paper, just in case you're asked for them. That's a new thing this year, so I don't know how hot they'll be on checking. That's only for driven show vehicles, not for trailered or towed ones or unfinished projects or towing vehicles.
Bobbi, if you're coming up the M3, it's quicker to come off the motorway, (junction 6), then take the first left & follow the signs up over the bridge & along Old Common Road, into London Road. If you follow your blue route, turn left at the big letter B!
See you in the morning guys!

Too early.  Couldn't get the kinks out of my bod soon enough to get on the road in time to get there.  Ironically, some of the kinks got there while cleaning the trike for the show, in a wind that was chillier than I thought - now it looks great (well, better) and no-one will see it!

Hope you all have a great time!

Hi guys.
O.K, I'll order extra sunshine for next year. It stayed dry for most of the day, before finally starting to drizzle around 2.30 -3.0.clock. That ain't bad -we've had years when it's absolutely bucketted down all day & nobody's come. I chatted to one of the organisers at lunchtime & he said as far as they were concerned, overcast is better than scorching sunshine. If it's too hot, the punters all bugger off to the coast for the day. They say there were more cars there than ever this year & there was certainly a varied mix. You'd be hard pressed to walk around the 2 showfields & not find something to interest you. Over 900 vehicles, everything from scooters to steam lorries. Not bad for a free show.
After all the talk of insurance details, we were waved straight through the gate as always -"Manky Monkeys? Scruffy lot, over there in the corner". Although Dave was one of the first onsite, we were still the last club stand to get all our vehicles, banners etc sorted out before the general public started drifting in. We really must get organised. Maybe next year.
Special thanks to Nathan, (Galaxie 500), by the way for the catering. I did my best & ate as much cake as I could, honest. Also to Lesley & Steve, (BlackPig & Brock), for providing the awning -& putting it up all by themselves in less time than it normally takes us to unload Loony's out of the van.
Great to see so many of you lot & I really appreciate you all making the effort. Thank you. I did try to chat to everyone, but if I missed you, I hope you had a good day & got home safely. We always say it, but we do have the coolest vehicles on our pitch & every one of them had a steady stream of admirers all day. People like the weird stuff!
I usually end up trapped, chatting, all day & miss most of the show, but managed to escape for a while today for a quick walk around, so grabbed a few snapshots.
Thanks again to all who made it a success. Well done everyone.
Same time next year?

Nathan, (blue jacket in the centre), with his Ford Galaxie 500.

Ash's truck arriving with Chris's V8 Moggy Minor on the top deck & my V8 Ford Pop underneath, looking like some crazy 50s banger racing team!

BlackPig & Brock's small block Chevy slingshot dragster, next to Tom's XS650 Yamaha bobber.
The dragster's just been sold, with a brand new motor fitted, (Steve always keeps his engine & fits it in the next car he builds). Being shown before delivery to the new owner. He sent a photo to the buyer, who was chuffed to bits it got so much attention at the show.

Phunkie's vintage Portafold caravan. He's made a fantastic job of restoring it. Full of details from the parquet flooring to the doorbell. He even reproduced the logos. It folds flat into a trailer in less than 2 minutes. Had a queue of people peering inside all day.

Ash's Toyota Supra drift car. Drifting is sorta skidding with attitude. Not so much a race, more akin to figure skating or gymnastics in that points are awarded for technical skill & style. Ash competes in the National championships & had been at Castle Combe race circuit the day before the show.

Chris's Moggy.

Hiya. I've got a really sunburnt nose & ears! I'm not a fan of blazing sunshine anyway, (I go to Scotland for my holidays. Sitting on a hot beach would be my idea of hell). For me, the weather was just about right & if the rain had held off for another hour it would've been perfect. It'd stopped by the time we'd packed up.
BayChimp-
I had a chat to Kalvin as I was wandering around. The Basingstoke show's pre-book only -you can't just enter on the day cos they have limited space, (around 900 vehicles every year). He didn't know what he'd have on the road or what the weather would be like, so didn't pre-book, but came along anyway. Sorry I didn't chat to you longer -lots of people to talk to! Let's get your trike there next year.
Neil-
Brock & I watched the blue finned coach leave at the end of the day. He thought the fin was something to do with air conditioning & was a feature of the coach building company. Can't remember the vehicle manufacturer, but I think it may have said "Continental" on the grille. It was my favourite of the day.

Had to leave a little early to enable Emily to catch ferry back to Isle of Wight. Show plaques......forgot all about those, but would be nice to have another one to put on workshop wall :)
Hope everyone arrived home OK.

Taken from Wikipedia & emailed to me by Brock:

The 1930s
There were huge numbers of small to medium sized professional coachbuilders in existence around Britain as Thomas Harrington & Sons Ltd moved into its new Hove factory. The management of Harringtons decided that two things were necessary to stand them in good stead in this crowded market. The first was building good relationships with blue-chip customers, and the second was to produce designs with a distinctive Harrington 'look'.

Instances of the first were their long-term supply to high–class coach firms in the private and large company sectors. Such private customers included Grey-Green of Stamford Hill, London, Charlies Cars of Bournemouth and Silver Star of Porton Down. The large firms included the Tilling Group's North Western Road Car Company of Stockport and BET-group member Devon General of Exeter, but perhaps the most enduring relationship of all was as supplier to the local BET coaching powerhouse Southdown Motor Services.

The styling distinctiveness was a major selling point. A Harrington body had a clear 'look' at a time when many coachbuilders, Duple especially, would oblige customers and produce an astounding variety of outlines from the conservative to the totally bizarre, sometimes building to order straight copies of another coachbuilder's style.

By the mid-1930s the Harrington 'look' included a half cab with no canopy over the engine and a stepped window line, all arranged in a distinctive flowing series of curves. By the end of the decade when streamlining was the vogue Harrington had devised and patented a new feature called the 'dorsal fin'. This appurtenance looked like a truncated aircraft tail and when applied to the rear of the vehicle allowed a rakishly curved rear-dome outline without compromising passenger access to the rear bench seat and was designed to act as an air-extractor as the vehicle moved, stale air exited the coach saloon due to the suction effect of the low pressure areas created behind the fin.

I nipped over to Cliddesden village, just outside Basingstoke, this morning & saw Tom Mansbridge, one of the show organisers & proprieter of Cliddesden Garage. He gave me 2 dozen show plaques. They're lazer printed aluminium, about 3" x 2". No idea what they'll cost to post, but if you displayed a vehicle at the show & would like one, PM me your address & I'll send 'em out.

A 1958 Thornycroft SwiftSure tanker.
Tom bought this in an auction in Wales for 250 quid, bidding against a family of pikeys who wanted it for the scrap metal value.
The chassis was beyond repair. but then he bought a second one in the Midlands for £200!
I was suprised to find the cab's fibreglass. Apparently Thornycrofts were the first lorry manufacturer to use 'glass cabs. They were also the first to fit air brakes to lorries, the first to fit disc brakes to lorries etc. Leaders in their field for decades. There were 1,500 Thorny lorries involved in the first world war. At their peak, they employed 3,000 people. The factory was 2 minutes away from the house I'm now lodging in & Tom recalled that when the whistle blew at the end of a shift, the road outside instantly became a seething mass of workers, all heading home.
I asked how he cleaned the inside of the tank, (it's split into 4 compartments). I was expecting him to say it was shotblasted or steam cleaned -"I lowered my grandson in there with a scraper". That's what kids are for!
An interesting conversation.

Original advertising sign. Usually on my garage wall :)

Outsiders still tend to think of Basingstoke as just ugly 60s concrete architecture, (nearly all long gone now). It's got some fascinating social history though.

Hi Andy. You're right about Basingstke having a fascinating social and industrial history. As well as Thornycrofts you had Wallis and Steevens the steamroller and traction engine builders, who were right in the middle of town, across from the station where the old civil service building was. It was a nice thriving market town. Then the town planners got hold of it and turned it into a concrete nightmare. I'm sure Old newbie remembers it as it was. As for Tom putting his grandson in the tanker the poor lad, lets just hope he hasn't got any chimneys that need sweeping.

Post by: Manky Monkey on May 14, 2013, 09:48:21 PM
Yeah, maybe it's a sign of impending old age, but I love all that stuff.
For those that haven't been, the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke's worth a look. Lots of old buildings from around Hampshire, taken down brick by brick & rebuilt into street scenes that you can wander around, with old vehicles parked on the streets, shop displays, a working Georgian pub etc. It's suprisng -& slightly scary, how much of it I remember! Some of the road sections are made of wooden cobbles -blocks of wood soaked in tar. My dad lived in London as a child & used to say it wasn't unusual to see streets of those wooden cobbles on fire!

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/milestones

Tom said the tanker was still full of crude oil when he bought it. He plans to fill the rear 2 compartments with sharp sand when it's finished. Apparently, they're very light on the back ends without a bit of a load in them. The Blue Peter tyre lorry has 2 tons of tyres thrown in the back all the time to make it easier to drive.
