Title: am proud to announce
Post by: yoda on September 15, 2005, 11:50:45 AM
Mr Monkey
you wanted a logo for tshirts well what about this

i tried the green but it just didnt work at all

this gives a 50's retro feel, i have tried a huge amount of different colours and these seem to work best

what do you think

would look good as a patch on a shirt similar to your orange one (except in a beige or cream colour)

I bought a T shirt in Marks & Sparks the other day -yeah, I know, how sad is that eh? It says something like L.A Motorworks on it but the print looks like it's been scrubbed with sandpaper in places to give a faded, "distressed" look. Have you got a font like that? Or can you just "age" the whole logo? Like the oval shape & lettering but can you try a cartoon monkey in place of the tyre? Not sure you'd immediately recognise it as a whitewall tyre & might be confusing. As you say, simple works best. Something instantly recognisable. There's a car in my street with a "Baby on Board" sign in the window. Got a cartoon chimp on it that would be perfect. Not hairy like the first site logo we tried, bald headed, big round eyes, round cauliflower ears, big smiley mouth. Hard to describe but I haven't got a scanner so can't draw it for you. Any cartoon faces on Google Image you could pinch? I was thinking cartoon chimp head with hairy arm holding spanner hanging over the edge of the oval. Failing that, some variation on the Gorilla face on the homepage? Do you think he'd look better without the shades, as he is on the links page? His leather jacket would fit the 50s look.
Flap, Ska Man, Si & I have talked of having a patch made up to sew on the pocket of american style button up short sleeved work shirts to wear when we're out on our trikes. Got a local company here in Basingstoke that do embroidered promotional stuff.
If we can find a design that works on shirts Kris has said I can sell 'em in his shop.
Colours -could you try banana yellow on mid brown shirts? Or a sepia brown/cream combo?

Mmm, not sure now! Can you outline the letters in black as they are on the red one? The red looks much clearer -got more oomph, but I was thinking yellow on brown might fit the Monkey theme better & looks more olde worlde -probably cos I had several favourite bike shirts back in the 70s in those colours! Can you try a pair of dice in place of the disrobed lady person on the red background? Maybe in red too -less colours equals cheaper print costs! Really don't want white shirts -personally I never wear white. Any ideas on shirt colours? Would the logo work on a variety of colours to give more buyer choice? What does black & white logo look like?

Yeah, that's pretty cool.
What about an outline drawing of something like this on the left of the logo?
Actually I like the dice one, but would still like to see something in the Monkey line if you have it please, in extra medium.

i think the red/beige gives it the best retro feel, and trust me i have tried loads of different colours, and nothing came close

But your opinion means so very little here. :P
So what colour shirt then? Red? Don't fancy white shirts really.
You don't think the yellow/brown would work with a monkey face, on brown shirts? You've got a LandRover shirt in those kind of colours haven't you? Can we see a "distressed" style logo please Yodie the textile king? Have you got a medium with extra long arms for Manky Monkies?

I'm looking for Monkies as we type, but can't find any. Nothing in your vast Google Image files?

Where did that "Approved" come from? Was that me?
Hmm, personally I'd go with just the monkey or just the dice. Both looks a bit too much, a bit cluttered & it IS manky MONKEY motors.
Can we have some other opinions please. May take a day or so before anyone reads this! Just purely out of interest, what does just the monkey look like in the yellow?

Title: Re: am proud to announce

Just nipping out to the shops for half an hour. No talking about me while I'm gone!

You want monkies AND dice? Doesn't that look cluttered? Can we leave the options here for a day or two & see what people think?
Any other colour options? Large or small logo? What colour shirts? Printed on the back or front? Or big on the back & small on the front? Any constructive opinions?

Title: Re: am proud to announce

Red looks best, don't like the yellow. Monkey or monkey and dice, both look good. Small print on pocket of work shirt, large print on back. Medium print on front of T-shirt, tiny print on right hand sleeve.
There you go, sorted, get em done.

gotta agree with flap ;)

Title: Re: am proud to announce
Post by: Manky Monkey on September 15, 2005, 06:53:36 PM
See, I think the dice one looks at first glance like a big oval body with a head at one end & two square feet at the other!
My personal preferance would be the yellow monkey face on a sort of khaki green/brown shirt with the logo "distressed", as if someone had lightly rubbed bits of the print with sandpaper or an eraser in a diagonal motion going up to the right. Does that make sense? Want it to look like your favourite garage shirt that you've had for donkey's years that came from some fictional hotrod speed shop. Something that would look cool to wear on your bike or wandering around a show. We print a few dozen, sell 'em in Kris & Doro's new shop & on the site. How much is a shirt worth? A tenner? A quid from each sale to Yodie for his design work, a little something for Wizzy for using her contacts to find a good deal on a supplier, something for K & D for their shop floor space & probably a quid left for me. Not that worried about a profit as long as I could break even. Would just be a real buzz to see people walking around in something we've designed -plus it's free advertising for the site.

Every day I'm forced to reappraise my opinion of you Mr Flap. You get gittier every time we speak.
So are we going for the red then? Just the monkey face? What colour shirts?

You want BOTH now?! O.K, where we gonna find a supplier for affordable denim shirts then? Does that need an embroidered patch rather than printed? Can we get 'em done at a price people will pay? What would you expect to pay for denims & T shirts? If you want big logos on the back of denims, in embroidery, that's gonna be pricey. Any suggestions?

Andy,
bin the monkey and the dice and the lady, use the red and beige, and put me down for one. If you must use the monkey, move it round to nearer ten o'clock or even 10.30, much better overall balance I think

Too many choices! I'm all confused now!
O.K, so we've settled on the red logo, medium sized on the front of a T shirt with a smaller version or just the address with the monkey head on the sleeve. On a red shirt? Which of the final logo choices looks best? The self contained oval, (head inside the oval shape), might be easier to get made as embroidered patches for denims.
What about the denims? Long sleeved? Short sleeved? Printed or embroidered logo?
What sizes would sell best? Medium & large? Or is it worth doing small for children? Some input please.
Well done Yodie by the way. Thankyou for that.

embroidered on the denim

but i wouldnt do a red shirt, i would do blue (denimmy blue)  white, khaki or black

and Mrs Yoda says the red looks a lot better than the yellow, and she is a professional florist and has to match colours and stuff.

i would deffo have a denim one, XL please

large and medium would sell bestest (i think)

or even black like this

Exactly the kind of work shirts I had in mind. Yup, red logo on black Ts would be cool wouldn't it, & black will go with anything. Will check with the people who embroider stuff locally, (as soon as I find their address), to see if they can supply those cotton shirts -or do we still want proper denim?

Could you not use the monkey from the home page.
also this logo has a ww2 USAF feel about it, why not incorporate a P51 on there somewhere.

Still think if it's manky MONKEY it should feature a monkey surely.... Shirley.
Definitely needs a hotroddy look to it so we can flog 'em to all the punters at the drag race meets & also cash in on the whole retro thing. What about a line drawing of this '32 overlaid on the bottom left of the logo?
How about double sided shirts? Oval logo with dice or car or a couple of spanners maybe on front, with large monkey head & text on back?
