Post by: Terrortubby on May 29, 2007, 02:15:38 PM
GSXR 750wn Streetfighter Trike

My gorgeous and most long suffering but understanding spouse has given this job the go ahead.  ;D

Funnily enough my long suffering bank manager has said yes too.  ;D ;D ;)

I am off to see a chap about it next week and will be posting as the job progresses.

Watch this space   ;D

Regards

Gary

Following a chat with one or two people and a longish drive and the passing of wads of notes this ones a goer.

I am taking the bike over for measuring up and agreeing the style of mudguards and wheels.

I will be taking some pictutes as soon as we have a bit of progress.

Looking for a set of MG ZR rims and tyres for the back end. 205 x 15.

If you have a set cheapish let me know.

Cheers

Gary

Title: Re: GSXR 750w Streetfighter Trike
Post by: Terrortubby on June 07, 2007, 10:19:32 AM
NOOOOO!! I'm not anywhere near good enough to get this right.
It's a double wishbone affair with a chain diff.
I only have a drill press and no idea about how to use it.

John has a fully kitted out workshop and is a proper engineer, I'm just a tubby bloke with all the gear and no idea.

I intend to do the odd quarter mile on this and might even get the engine sorted for a bit of drag racing.

John did a trike for a mate of mine for drag racing and it's awesome. If I'm going to risk my life and chubby limbs on the thing it has to be done right.

It's going to be built in the black by John and we'll test it on a closed road.
Then back to my house to strip it down for powdercoat and polishing.

I'm not building it but I am doing the final assembly.

Thats the plan anyway ;D ;)

Regards

Gary

I will MM no worries.

Went for my last ride on it as a bike yesterday. Took a ride to Leek Via Long Hill and passed the "Winking Man". Gave him a wave at about warp 4.

It's a great bit of road with short straights, hairpins ans S bends. A brilliant road for my last ride out as a bike riding biker. I had a blast but was completely shattered when I got there. Took me 20 minutes just to get a bit of feeling in my right leg.

John added lowering the pegs for me to the list of jobs, hopefully with the Renthals and lowered pegs I won't be in agony every time I ride the trike.

I have loved every minute of owning my GSXR and had some magic moments riding it but it's time to see sense and get onto 3 wheels full time. I can't wait to roll my trike out and have some fun. Onmce this is done that really will be it for building things.
Time to enjoy life and go riding a lot.

Have you tried the same road on the Reliant?

Not as yet but no doubt I will be doing over the next couple of months, John has asked me if I'd like to help do some of the fabrication. Being a bit of a sponge when it comes to learning new stuff I jumped at the chance.

More as it transpires.

Rear wing for the trike.

£40 notes delivered. It's a real wing too and may provide a bit of downforce but I'm only fitting it cos it'll look phat!!

Oh and to wind all the little knobs in hot hatches  up when I leave them for dead. Teach the swine to roar up and down my street with straight through pipes all night.

Huh!!

Sat watching the rain waiting for parts to arrive before I go and check on the progress.

Rain and postal strikes are the current topics foremost in my mind

On the plus side I managed to get a small backrest to stop the passengers disappearing over the back end.

Some pics as soon as I see it.

More bits have arrived, Almost got enough bits to take over to John's house for him to play with.

Just got a front and rear sprocket, The rear is a blank so it can be drilled to suit the diff.

I also got a really good pair of Tokiko 4 pot calipers for the rear brakes, yes folks it's going to have 4 pot callipers with 240mm discs on both of the rear wheels and two on the front wheel too.

I haven't got any chain ordered as yet as we still havent worked out how long it should be.

Still waiting for a brake disc to arrive along with the back rest for the passenger.

Some piccys next week if I remember the camera. I left it at home last time i went over to see how it was coming along.

Later

Post by: Terrortubby on July 22, 2007, 12:37:46 PM
Dropped all the parts with John.

Not a lot to see so I didn't get the camera out so no pics as yet.

Today I am cutting a fillett out of two mudguards and re-glassing them to ten and a half inches wide. I am also going to sort the light mounts out and get them painted.

Then back to Johns with them so he can fabricate the mounts up.

I have worn a few posties out on this and probably will get through one or two more yet.

More when it happens..

Regards

Gary

Some piccys of the progress.
Subframe nearly done, diff finished and waiting to be mounted. Wishbones nearly done. Waiting for the hub carriers to be machined so they can be bolted in.

John had to wait for some tube and parts from myself so things should move a bit faster now.

The story up to now.

Some parts have not been purchased as yet and the re registration costs need to be added.

Just thought I'd give you all an idea of why I spend a lot of time at home and not out partying or doing bike shows. All my spare goes on this bugger until it's done.

I spoke to John today and he's got it back on 3 wheels. He's waiting for some wheel studs, the standard ones are too short because of the disc carriers. He's also looking for a cable for the hand brake, between 30 and 36 inches long. I am doing a bit of ebaying to see whats available.

Not too long now with a bit of luck.

M3 wheels? We've already bought one pair of Beemer wheels from you. Not going to use them now though I'm afraid. We're going for widened Morris Minor steelies instead. I like the discs & calipers. Remind me, what are they from?

The discs are GSXR 750/1100 rear discs, the callipers are GSXR 750 4 pots.

And yes I have 3 wheels from the same set you had a pair from.

I got some 16 inch rims that I like better, the BMW ones are just too busy for my likeing.

More later this week

I'd planned to pinch Ska Man's GS850 front wheel when he swaps his trike one for an old Superdream Comstar. The GS one has a star shaped cross laced pattern that would match the BMW rears quite well.
We're now on the hunt for a cheap solid disc front wheel to match the steel rears. Harley V Rod, FatBoy, V Max, that kinda thing.

It looks like this at the moment, There are a few problems to sort out. The "engineer" didn't allow for the foot pegs. I now need do get rid of the missus and get a midget as a girlfreind or cut the wifes legs off. Neither apeal to me really.

He also forgot about chain lash. I have had to have an idler made up and get it fitted by someone who knows what they are doing.

Looks very tidy mate. No project ever goes to plan! Finding solutions to the problems that crop up's half the battle. You'll appreciate it all the more once it's done.
Keep plugging away at it. It'll be worth it in the end.
My humble advice? If you're really sick of the sight of the thing, don't throw a wobbly & flog it cos you'll only regret it & end up building another. Lock it away in the shed, walk away from it & come back when you're feeling re-inspired. Amazing how a bit of a break & viewing things with a fresh eye can throw up solutions to problems you just couldn't see the first time around. ;)

So many unreliable trike builders about - I do sympathise as I know you sent it to someone else so as to avoid all the hassle you really didn't need.

I shall have to put a bomb under Bruce to get the work done on my new one, and even then i know he'll take three times as long as he says - but at least I know when it's done it'll be done right!

It's getting done now Bobbi, so the pressure is off for a bit.

Andy its 53 inches wide to the outside of the rims. 61 inches between the front and back wheel centre.
It's gonna need a wheelie bar I think ;D ;D

The paint and airbrush work were done by Matty Evans @ Mesi-art in Yorkshire.
Bout £1400-00 at todays prices.

The trouble with bespoke paint jobs is if you scuff a panel you can't just go and buy a replacement. The other sad thing is i have a full race fairing done the same for the bike and I need to cut it to use the belly pan.
no more race reps for me, it's fighters from now on just for the comfort and not being folded double on the bike ;)

Today I are mostly making foot peg hangers, I want them lower and a bit more forward than standard.

I am also junking the rear brake pedal. No use to me at all. The rears and one front disk are going on the front master cylinder and the other front is going to go on the thumb brake on the left bar. ;)

Lookin' good TT. I'm glad you stuck with it -at one point it sounded like you were going to give up. Looks considerably faster than the Reliant!
While you're here mate, I'm thinking about fitting a quick shift/remote linkage on my Reliant gearchange. You did something simialr on yours didn't you. How'd you get on with it? I'm trying to get rid of some of the free-play & excessive travel in mine. Don't want to alter the frame at all so it needs to be a self contained unit that'll bolt to the top of the gearbox.

Title: Re: GSXR 750w Streetfighter Trike

We have a quick shift kit fitted to the Beetle, it's just an ovoid sphere (did I just make that up ?) that fits to the bottom of the stick,it closes the clearances between stick and linkage and a spacer that increases the effective leverage of the stick.
    http://www.jcwhitney.com/wcsstore/jcwhitney/images/imagecache/G_11034G_CL_1.jpg

As the reliant stick acts directly on the selector mechanism it might not work as well, a similar effect would be to build up the little semi-circle at the bottom with weld and re fettle it to be a really close fit but I could forsee problems with selecting in a worn box ( I have tried it)
Thinking aloud, in a cyber like way, a better option might be to fit a raising piece or spacer under the top cover to move the pivot point up from the selector forks and extend the stick below the ball by a similar amount, that would work to shorten the throws and give the same result. Isn't the stick pinned to the ball and parallel at that point ? the lenghtening bit might be as simple as knocking out the pin and redrilling to suit. A length of 1" x 1/2" ali bar cut to suit the top plate, welded at the corners and drilled with the same pattern and a set of extended bolts would do the job as a spacer add two gaskets and you have a saleable kit !

p.s. your spell checker doesn't recognise "cyber" , made me smile

I rode it this afternoon, apart from a few niggles with the mudguards rattling a bit it seems to go well.
It's a bit soft at the rear at the moment so Mick and I will be having at it with a C spanner tomorrow to stiffen the back end up.

How does it sit when the front end comes up TT? Does it go down evenly on the rear suspension or does the chain drive side pull down lower & pull the trike to one side etc? Just curious cos I've never ridden a trike with suspension & our hardtails are too low to the ground to lift the front wheel, (& they're Reliant powered of course, before anyone else says it!). :P

It's a independant back end Andy, I only did a few runs up and down but it wheelies real easy, the rear seems to squat down as you accelerate, it tracks straight tho. It's a bit soft as yet, i need to adjust the ride height. I put a few pounds on( well nearly a stone) :-[ :-[ since we set the shocks up and it's tooooooooo soft

needs setting up, I just needed to see how it felt and whether any bits were going to fall off or break.

I'll do a bit of a scribble on it when i know more. ;)

I've spent a few hours in the shed taking my exasperation out on a few bits of metal, I have almost mocked the wing mount up and will finish it off this week.
Fortunatly I had some tube and flat bar lying about and got the rear struts and mounts bolted and tacked up.
Starting the front struts tomorrow and If I have the time I'll post some piccys.

It's keeping me busy and I'm not a wound up as I was but the tools have taken a bit of welly.

I'm not the best fabricator I know but I recon it should look good as long as I get a proper welder type to do the welding.
I managed the footpegs but they are made of steel angle and flatbar that is 3mm thick so I'm confident enough to weld that but the tube has thin wall and that scares the wotsit out of me so I'll hang fire for my mate to do it.

More as we go :P

Tanya, sarky, never,
It bolts to the old grabrail mount on the rear seat subframe and the back of the new trike chassis that bolts into the bike frame.
It's bloody strong too, I hung on it and it didn't move. Most things I hang on snap like twigs so I'm happy it'll do the job.
I have a bit of grinding and filing to do and then its smoothrite time. Can't afford powdercoat at the mo.

I did tell you and the other half I'd be running it with MMM stickers on it, I know it's not a reliant so is strictly not a MMM type trike but figured being a member of the forum I could sneak it in sort of thingymajigger. ;D

Shows? not really my cup of tea but I suppose it'll be entered in the odd one or two ;D ;D ;)

The diff on my trike is carried in sealed lubed bearings on the carrier.
It has the diff gears covered by an ally tube

(http://photoalbum.disabledbiker.co.uk/albums/userpics/10003/Picture%20014.jpg) (http://photoalbum.disabledbiker.co.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-1183)

It has a hole in it to add lube.

Can I use normal high performance grease on the diff gears or do I need to use diff oil?
Reason I ask is, the diff leaked yesterday when filled with oil, another small thing to thank the engineer for.

To save the hassle of stripping it all down again to seal the leaks, can I just bung some grease in as the diff gears will only be doing any real work when cornering, or have I got it all arse backwards?

If diff oil is the only option and ideas on how to seal the diff, it's leaking down the splines on the outputs?
Could it be run partly filled so the oil isn't at the level of the splines?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Gary

By eck!! this trike building lark do test a fellers patience.

Filled the diff with  diff oil and then took it out of the trike to fix the gusher

The engineer had overlooked a small hole in the diff, soon fixed with a tap and large lug screw liberally coated with thread lock.

Diffs mostly back in the trike and I'll finish bolting it all up tomoz.

Just got to suss how to plug the huge hole in the diff casing once it's filled.
This hole is the one in the piccys on the casing, finding it hard to find a grommet large enough and may well just make a cover that bolts to it instead.

Should be ready for the MOT once this little bit of bother is sorted.

Hi there absolute belter of a trike worth the blood and sweat for sure.
Is there any chance of some info on the spring ratings you use on the spax once you've got it set up too your liking, would be much appreciated.

Cross all your didgets boys and girls,

It's off for it's MOT in the morning. I've done my best as always but I always get jittery before the test. I have no idea why I just do.

Must be a deep recessed memory of seeing the head teech for the cane, dealing with anything official always makes me feel like a naughty school boy.  ::) ::)

I have issues, lots of issues ??? ???

Good luck TT! Keep us informed eh.
Know what you mean about MOTs. Not the end of the world if your vehicle fails -you can always fix it & re-test it, but I get ridiculously nervous every time. Let us know how you get on please.

hmm weird :)

Not really VB,
Halifax bank messed our account up and ruined our credit rating when the incompetant tossers made 4 credit searches in one day to open one poxy current account. All of which were unnessasary Our credit score dropped from the high 900's to 627 and Wendy is out of work with all the stress.
Mortgage needs paying and the overdraft needs paying off and the kids need feeding.
The only reason I have to sell this is all down to the stupid gits at the Halifax. They give you extra alright, extra bloody stress.

Not weird mate but very 'kin annoying.

Andy in answer to your question I need it to make £6500-00 ish to break anywhere near even.
If it don't sell it will be parked in the garage until I can afford to run it. I'm putting it on ebay as a classified ad later this week.
The only reason i spent on the weight cert and MOT is to make it more attractive to prospective buyers.

It should be back from the MOT by 3 so I hope it passes.

PS, it came in at 300 kg wet, the ride to the weigh bridge and MOT station was it's first proper ride out.

What a bloody hoot, scary ain't in it :o :o. Man it's quick off the mark and the front end keeps trying to roll over the axle.I suppose I could go everywhere on two wheels and drop the front to steer occasionally :P ;D
Handled the roundabouts well and the 4 pots on the back are awesome. ;D ;)

More later.

The revenue weight is 300 kg dead on.
It passed it's MOT with flying colours and is ready to go.
Just the paperwork to sort out, knowing my luck at the moment that should be done by July.

It's fun to ride and with the slightly lower gearing it gets a shuffle on right quick like.
noisy bugger too, the straight thru end can works a treat or not, depends on your perspective I suppose.

More as I ride it a bit.

Sorry you're having to part with it TT after working through all the grief - I hope you'll go for scompensation from Halifax once the rest is sorted, to enable you to buy another trike, this sort of thing really shouldn't happen!

I've had probs with Halifax myself and I don't even have an account with them!

They'll be paying out alright, just been told by the Information Commisioner they are in breach of the data protection act in that they carried out multiple searches given we only agreed to one.
I have submitted a formal complaint to the FSA and Information Commisioners offices. Halifax have until the 8th under FSA rules to resolve our issues before the full weight of the FSA kicks in and they get spanked.
They are already going to be done over by the Information Commisioner as they have broken the law with regards Data Protection.

I'm also going to see a solicitor with regards the personal Injury caused to Wendy and Myself in respect of the stress and Wendy's loss of earnings. She's off with stress and we are losing out on the overtime she normally does every month.

Bankers, I'd spell it a bit differently myself ;)

Nice piccies Gary -they'll look good in the write-up when you send it in  ;)
Sure you have to sell it? Seems a shame when it obviously makes you smile.
Ride it down to Basingstoke & bung it on our pitch at the Basingstoke Transport Festival! We can find you some floor space at the cottage in Guildford for the weekend.

Now it looks like this ;D ;D  Even better now I recon, the fairing gives a lot of protection against the wind blast, makes it a lot comfier.

Oh yeah, this bugger is right quick, in fact it's more quick than a very quick thing  ;D ;D ;D ;)

I'm totally stunned, there were some much better trikes there with adaptations in my opinion, I feel rather humbled.

Cheers everyone,

I have a few small jobs to sort on this and then I can enjoy it for a bit.

No pics Andy, I was helping marshal so didn't think a camera was worth taking, I never get time to wander when helping out as it's hard to get enough folk to marshal so I stay busy most of the time.
When I'm not busy I'm too pissed to be allowed near my camera.

Hiya Bobbi,
Thanks, it is a nice little trike

Given the law of averages dictates that if we keep going to the same rallys and shows we will eventually be in roughly the same sqare yard at the same time, am I sitting on your shoulders or are you sitting on mine?

Mind you with the spate of canncellations recently it's stretching the odds somewhat ;)
