Looking in my manual for info tonight and it says it has a primary reduction gear of 2.24 . Knowing naff all about bikes doe sthis mean that output from gearbox max revs will only ever be 10,000 (redline ) divided by 2.24?  I was actually chceking overall tyre size and final drive ratio and it's a really tall gearing which doesn't tie up with what I've been told about cruising speed of these motors

IE Final drive of 3.09 with tyre diameter of approx 24" gives a theoretical top speed of about 240 flat out in 5th!!  Halving that output would make it more realistic and easier to work out car diff ratio needed.

Yep. The clutch/input shaft runs at a lower speed than the crankshaft. On some bikes the clutch basket is chain driven, on the CX it is geared.
