Isle of Wight looked particularly close today as we walked along Studland beach.

Thats a nice picture BG, I take it that's looking across at the Needles? if so that's looking across 11 miles of sea, from Studland Beach, bet you dont often see it that clear.

It's not often that it looks that close, the conditions were ideal on a windy without any sea mist and cool enough so there was no heat haze.  I have seen it like that before though.

Have fun this weekend - sounds good!

Looks like a painting Bobbi, especially with that sky.
I'm sure I've heard somewhere that the horizon is generally 15 miles away.

If you are 6' tall and standing at the waters edge, the horizon will be three miles, that's why the water horizon looks weird in BG's picture, the island is another 7 or so miles away, and you are actually looking at the upper parts of the cliffs.

Nice pic. As you say BG, it's normally more obscured.
Distance to the horizon depends on how high up you are. Even how tall you are makes quite a difference.
Easily worked out though. Distance in miles =1.22x the square root of your height above sea level in feet.
From the shore line it's slightly less than 3 miles.

That's an excellent set of pics Tony - and B&W is a perfect medium for those!  Hand held or tripod?   I find I can't get really sharp pics now without a tripod but it's not alweays convenient (like when having a walk on the beach)  I've tried a monopod but it didn't really help.

Cheers Bobbi, They are all hand held (you can tell in a couple) and only two with flash where it was so dark I couldn't see anything, that was under the pithead. I have a monopod but it only holds it flat. When I go there for the photo shoot in a few weeks, I will borrow or buy a tripod before and that's as I want to be in some of the photos.
