my dad had a number of ways of warming food/tins of beans, soup and the like

in the brew canteen when he wasin the workshop he had a piece of thick but fine mesh that went over the gas ring and he stood the soup can on top to warm.

when out on site  he had a thick steel plate on a sort of tripod with a bracket/clip under it that took the welding or cutting torch  so that the steel plate got red hot ,a bit like a modern cookers ,solid, hot plate

I worked for Courts the furniture shop driving the delivery van , the warehouse was an old church just before the flyover at Bow , and you could smell was the trebor factory  from there , was'nt there another place that made matches ? I seem to remember being able to smell that as well  .....  ( was 30 odd year ago  )  ....

Brymay on Hackney Marshes later became Matchbox toys (or cars not too sure which). My dad left the Navy after the war and went to work at Trebor as maintenance and boilerman, he worked there `til he died in 1966/67
