If you've been paying attention lately, you'll know Saddlebags is a precision engineer extraordinaire. He's self employed, sub contracting for a local engineering company, (who's manager happens to be into hotrods), & has the run of the workshop to work more or less what hours he wants.
A very clever chappie when it comes to twiddling knobs & pressing buttons on CNC gear. He's been supplying the Basingstoke Monkey troop with all manner of wondrously shiny one-off bits & pieces for the last 6 months or so.
Now it's pay-back time!
He wants a trike. Not a Reliant, but an automatic Vauxhall Chevette motor. His brother runs a car restoration business specialising in "new classics" -all those 60s & 70s cars that were common as muck when we were teenagers but have disappeared now -hence the Shove-it engine.
So yesterday evening Ska Man, Flap & I duly gathered at SaddleBags' place & began laying out another Manky trike frame. Similar to the rest but with a few alterations to accomodate the bigger engine & longer box. We bent tubes, burnt ourselves with the welder, ate cake & generally messed about, while he got on with machining my steering stem & yokes.
In a couple of hours we'd got as far as deciding engine height, bending the down tubes & tacking on the headstock. We're going to cut & slug the bottom rails cos it's easier & quicker to produce the kick up to the axle clamps that way, rather than trying to go from headstock to axle in a single tube length. A bit unnerving having a professional engineer watching over your shoulder while you're faffing about with wobbly bits of tube, but being able to say "cut a bit of tube that length & fishmouth the ends on one of your magic machines", & being handed back a perfectly fitting tube a few minutes later's a bit of a novelty. Beats buggering about with hacksaws & grinders any day.
We'll be back there this evening, when we'll hopefully get it up on 3 wheels. It's due to be on show at the Shepton Mallet show in 2 week's time! As an unfinished project, alongside my own, obviously!
Nige cuts the top tubes to take the headstock while Flap ...err, inspects the internal bore of a tube off-cut.
Ever professional, that's us.

The biggest, chunkiest axle clamps in the World. Mr Bags is a chunky kinda guy -one of those rugger playing types, & wants his trike to have a squat, beefy look to it, so everything's big & chunky. I'll take a pic of the clamps later for you. Front halves are steel & the backs are ally. He thinks he might recess the backs to take the rear lights. We think he's way too clever for the likes of us!

The yokes are only temporary & came with the Kwacka forks. He's already machined up a pair more worthy of his talents.
Anyone notice one of the rear tyres is on the wrong way round?

He's got a free exhibitor's ticket for the Shepton Mallet show on the strength of this being at least up on 3 wheels, so we've got to get a move on!

I know, I know! Supposed to be smoothing off the welds on my handlebars so I can nip them over to the powder-coaters with the yokes this afternoon. I suspect they won't get there till tomorrow, (my day off). Then back at SaddleBags' shiny things factory this evening.
O.K, I'm off to the garage. Later doods.  Cool

They still managed to trip over each other. Even Saddlebags asked how they manage to work together in the garage  Grin
