hi all just about to start another project chop and was sourcing some stuff and tube for the frame .

does anyone know what ERW tube stands for ?
as i have managed to get 28 mm od x 24 mm i.d seamless hydrolic tybe ( CFS )

does anyone know the differance other than the seamless bit and is it good to use ?

Electrical Resistance Welded, (ERW), tubing

ERW tubing can be an ideal choice when strength to weight ratio is critical, or when bending, flattening, flaring or other types of fabrication will be required. For many applications –including prop & drive shaft tubing, steering column components, recreational equipment & valve casings –ERW tubing offers significant cost savings throughout the fabrication process.
Because of it’s excellent workability, scrap loss is minimal. It’s uniformity & concentricity mean lighter walls can be specified, reducing the allowance for stock removal. ERW tubing is available in a wide range of wall to diameter ratios & can be manufactured from pre-coated steel.

Cold Finished Seamless, (CFS), tubing

Suitable for general hydraulic applications.

Cold Drawn Seamless, (CDS), tubing

High quality steel, used in the aircraft & racing industries. High specification, suitable for high impact applications.

-we use ERW cos it's perfectly good enough for our needs & is relatively cheap, (I paid 20 quid for 3 metres of 3/4 inch bore a few days ago). It bends in a hydraulic bender very nicely as it's soft enough to form, whereas the much higher specification CDS tends to be more brittle -it creases or flattens rather than bending. Always lots of discussion on forums as to what's best. Basically, if you're planning on going racing, scrutineers may well insist on CDS, but for normal road use, ERW's fine.

thanks for that MM but is the CFS good to use ? or do i need ERW .

the tube i got was through a work contact so cost to me £0

on i dont think i could go racing even if i wanted to not with my eyesight mind you might be intersting to watch

Never used CFS & can't find much info on it on t'web. Most of the arguments you see on builders' forums are between CDS & ERW.
Anyone have any experience of CFS? (don't they sell sofas?)

like cds cfs is available as cfs1 and 2. i can never remember which is which but one bends better than the other and the other welds better Sad

we mainly use t45 tubing £22.00 per metre

odd thing though is that 1.25" is £22.00 per metre and so is the 0.75" Roll Eyes

thanks Mr D . as i kept the original bottom rail and front engine mounts the only bends i am making are very shallow for the rear end - bottom rail kick ups and back of the rear frame so i dont see any problems, but its always better to check

just to let you know myself and dod had a go at bending the rear bottom rails and the tube is perfect , cheers for the advice

ok ok dont get pushy mr M im a very busy person you know ( not )

here you go , looks good to me already and ive on done the bottom 2 , the string is purley a guide for the back bone not for structural integrity  Grin

Ah result , had a fabricator down to look at some stuff and he spotted the frame and he is going to tig weld it all and dress all the welds but not around the neck all for freeeeeeeeeeee
