Title: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on June 17, 2015, 12:55:01 PM Thought I'd start a thread listing programmes that may be of interest that will be on the TV fairly soon.
Fastest - MotoGP film/documentary about (and leading up to) the 2010 season, narrated by Ewan McGregor. ITV4, Sat 20 June 5:45pm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fastest_%28film%29 Rush - Premier on TV of Ron Howard's 2013 film of the 1976 Formula 1 season (Lauda & Hunt). Channel 4, Sat 20 June 9pm, and More4 Monday 22nd 9pm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_(2013_film) Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: BikerGran on June 17, 2015, 06:55:05 PM Pity they couldn't have used someone other than Ewan McWhatsit.

Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: JayJay on July 02, 2015, 10:10:47 PM Did anyone watch the Formula E racing at Battersea Park at the weekend?
It was quite good (on the TV of course). It was surprising to me to see how many relatives of well known names were racing. It is good to see this younger generation. The technology behind the cars was interesting especially when they dumbed it down and made comparisons to battery power I was more familiar with. I also liked the idea that the way the driver used the car's battery resource contributed to the end result. Once I got into the rules it became quite fascinating especially when those rules determined that a Brit won the race. JJ :) Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Manky Monkey on July 03, 2015, 09:14:09 PM Was it a really, really quiet race?
Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on July 04, 2015, 07:31:12 AM There's some tyre noise, otherwise it's just the noise of a lot of electric motors. Same sort of sound as the TT Zero bikes on the IoM.
Here's a couple of observations: One driver was penalised for using too much power. The guy leading the last lap, and who went across the finishing line first, was disqualified because his "tank" became "empty" before the chequered flag. On F1, there's discussion about making the exhausts systems noisier. Guess its a bit like putting the playing card against the spokes of your bicycle when a youngster! :D Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: BikerGran on July 04, 2015, 02:18:39 PM One driver was penalised for using too much power. Wouldn't attract my attention anyway. Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Manky Monkey on July 04, 2015, 09:24:56 PM Do electric motors have exhausts?

Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on September 14, 2015, 07:50:19 AM Channel 4, 8pm, Tuesday 15th Sept – Battle of Britain: Return of the Spitfires.
On 15th September 2015, the 75th anniversary of victory in Battle of Britain, an estimated 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes and Blenheims from across the UK, USA and Europe will come to Goodwood Aerodrome, West Sussex, to take part in an historic flypast over the South of England. The event brings together in one place more Battle of Britain aircraft than at any time since World War Two. http://www.battleofbritainday.co.uk/#!about/mainPage http://www.channel4.com/info/press/news/channel-4-commemorates-battle-of-britain-with-aerial-spectacular The event brings together more Spitfires and Hurricanes in one place than at any time since World War Two - all converging on Goodwood Aerodrome in West Sussex. The roar of 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes starting their engines will transport the airfield back in time to the Battle of Britain, when it was known as RAF Westhampnett and home to two fighter squadrons that fought in the campaign. Using helicopters and a chase plane, the show will capture all the action as the Spitfires and Hurricanes form ‘Wings’ of up to eight aircraft and embark on routes covering the South of England. It will be a truly dramatic and emotional spectacle as they pass over iconic locations connected with the Battle of Britain, such as the White Cliffs of Dover, Biggin Hill and RAF Uxbridge Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Manky Monkey on September 14, 2015, 05:08:09 PM That's a sight I'd like to see.

Nice scenery anyway Bobbi. Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: BikerGran on September 15, 2015, 07:22:33 PM Yup that was it! When you think about it, it was never going to be the fantastic thing it was touted as - there were about 40 planes taking part, flying 10 different routes. If my maths is correct that could mean a maximum of 4 planes on each route.
The way it was reported in the new wasn't factual either "the formations were seen from (can't remember all the places named) and Weymouth" - well our single plane was heading for Weymouth. Hey ho. Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on September 16, 2015, 08:17:45 AM Thought the TV programme was pretty good............

Unsupported he circumnavigates Africa on his motorcycle through 34 countries, covering a staggering 55,345 km. This monumental undertaking tests Spencer's physical endurance, challenges his determination and commitment and ultimately puts his life at risk. Without a support vehicle or team, Spencer's low budget, light-weight approach means he is forced to sleep rough, eat when and what he can when the opportunity arises and navigate by only a rough map and local knowledge. Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: BikerGran on February 09, 2016, 09:31:16 PM I've given up watching these programmes where they 'build' stuff - they make it look so easy!
On another forum I belong to a bloke came on and said he wanted to build a bike like this (posted a pic) or this (another pic) and did anyone have any advice. They were both very fancy builds with fancy paintwork (all overdone IMO) and apparently from some TV programme. People started giving him good advice and it then became clear he hadn't a clue what they were talking about, had never ridden a bike and didn't know anything about bikes! This a repeat from series 2 - where Guy with home-made bike, van & mate or two, takes on the infamous Pike's Peak hillclimb in the US of A. To say it's a little different to a UK hillclimb is a bit of an understatement............ Pike's Peak (first used for competition in 1916) used to be loose surface, but over the years more and more was tarmacked until the whole of the 12 odd miles is now 'pavement'. The start is at about 9400ft and the finish just over 14,100ft (which reduces engine power by around 30% for normally aspirated vehicles) and each competitor has to negotiate 156 turns, which is a lot of remembering!! If you haven't seen this, I reckon its well worth a watch, just keep an eye out for the drops at the side of the course!! http://www.ppihc.com/ Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on March 30, 2016, 04:15:58 PM Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th April 2016 - BBC4 at 9pm - James May's new series - The Reassembler

Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on November 04, 2016, 07:25:27 AM Watched an episode from the new series of "Wheeler Dealers" on Quest last night, 3rd Nov (series 10 episode 8 ) and it turned out that the guys got a V8 Ford Pop that needed some TLC so they did their thing.
Mike Brewer said his father had owned a Pop back in the day, and it turned out to be Micky Bray's Pinball Wizard (doesn't Sir Mankey have/had one if its engines tucked away somewhere?) Guessing the episode will be repeated sometime, maybe soon, so if ya want to see it, best refer to your TV listing for Quest http://wheelerdealers.xyz/series-10-episode-8/ Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Manky Monkey on November 04, 2016, 04:19:44 PM Never seen it, (I don't own a TV), but heard about it. The Pop was finished in purple wasn't it? Wasn't very well received by the Popular crowd, but if Ed China was involved, (is that the programme he does?), it would've had some unusual touches, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. Also some dispute over whether his Dad actually owned the Wizard. I think they decided he may have part owned it for a short time.
Yes, I owned a 383ci Mopar engine that came out of Pinball Wizard. I was given it for free by the current owner, Pete Legrice, to go in Tazet's Dodge Charger. It went with the car when I sold it & last I heard, was being rebuilt to go in it. Reckon its fair to say Bullitt will be up there, as maybe The French Connection, Dirt Harry Crazy Larry, Ronin, The Blues Brothers, The Italian Job with Michael Caine, (Gone in Sixty Seconds with Nicholas Cage? – has CGI with the scene on the bridge!), The Driver with Ryan O’Neill, Drive, The Bourne Identity and Vanishing Point...... But how many have seen the original 1974 Gone in Sixty Seconds? It has a 30+ minute chase and was written, directed and produced by H.B. Halicki, who just happens to have the lead role as well as doing his own driving and stunts in the film!!! Oh, and he also supplied the vehicles, of which it is said that nearly 100 were totalled. A 30+ minute car chase!! Wouldn't that be too long? It would be like listening to a 30+ minute drum solo or watching a 30+ minute firework display. Even though I love all those things, that length of time would be overkill. I will have to watch and see if it also applies to car chases. :D I do love the 'Blues Brothers' car chase. It was on the other week. My favourite scenes are the chase, the country and western bar with 'Rawhide', the church scene and Aretha Franklin singing. Such a great film. 8) A very appropriate emoji! ;D Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: stinkey on April 27, 2017, 06:28:30 PM I always thought the Blues Brothers we're rubbish ?

Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on March 15, 2019, 10:55:26 AM Motor racing Grand Prix style.
It’s the start of the 2019 Grand Prix / GP motor racing season for both bikes and cars. The motorcycles (normally) have 3 (televised) Grand Prix races at each venue, one for each of the formulae (the formulae being similar to the cars with Formula 1, Formula 2 etc). Checking out the gap of the opening race at Qatar across the finish line between 1st and 2nd for each race makes for interesting reading, and exciting racing. Moto3 – 0.05sec, Moto2 – 0.03sec, MotoGP – 0.02sec. If you don’t get BTSport, highlights appear to be shown on Quest, for the Qatar race it was the following day. Its the turn of the four-wheelers on Sunday. Enjoy........... Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on April 18, 2019, 09:30:02 AM Find it, fix it, drive it.
Sun 21st April 2019 More4 08.55 As I quite like old British drag/sprint bikes, I thought I'd mention this prog. There’s a chance to see a 500cc blown Triumph sprint / drag bike on the TV on Sunday (21st) morning starting at 08.55 on More4, so set up the Betamax if you want to record it. (ps it may well finish a couple minutes later than scheduled) The programme takes an old 1960’s ambulance, then converts & paints it so it’ll haul the bike, in period style, to Elvington where the bike is run on the airfield (the bike part is predominantly the last 15 minutes ish). Interesting to hear the comment/statement about Elvington as “ this is the Mecca mate, the birthplace of English land speed”. Me thinks what happened at Blackpool, Brooklands and Saltburn/Southport in the early part of the 20th century just might question the birthplace thing..................... I shall refrain from further comment ::) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle_land-speed_record https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_land_speed_record Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Manky Monkey on April 18, 2019, 10:18:02 AM That sounds genuinely interesting -sometimes I almost wish I had a TV :)

The story of Bonnie & Clyde's demise told from the lawmen's point of view & starring Kevin Costner & Woody Harrelson. Very good. Great scenes of depression era America, good portrayals of the 2 aging Texas Rangers tracking their foe across the country & lots of gorgeous 30s cars. https://youtu.be/aH6vC-BBKOc When I flew to Japan recently, I watched Green Book on the plane. The true story of an Italian American from the Bronx, hired to drive a black jazz pianist to a series of concerts across the Deep South in the 60s. Again, beautiful footage of period America & a great story of the growing friendship between 2 completely different characters as they travel in a rented Cadillac. https://youtu.be/QkZxoko_HC0 Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on May 08, 2019, 06:09:20 AM Fantomworks a new series starts.

Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on September 11, 2019, 11:00:54 AM Goodwood Revival. (from previous weekend’s event)
Thurs 19th September 2019 ITV4 8pm Fri 20th September 2019 ITV4 9pm The annual Goodwood Revival in Sussex is a 3-day event and features historic-vehicle motor racing on a circuit that basically remains un-changed (bar the odd gravel trap or run-off) since its closure in 1966. All the competition cars and bikes are of the era when the circuit was open. In addition, all vehicles within the circuit boundary (with the exception of safety related vehicles) such as breakdown trucks, ice cream vans and pace cars are all period, even the marshals get taken to their stations by period bus. Tickets (for the Sat & Sun) sell out way in advance as this is considered a world-class event with a huge array of famous drivers from the past attending, many racing alongside some of today’s drivers. (at time of posting, Wed 11th, some Friday tickets are still available!) Its also worth noting that the 'races' are races, not parades, and the vehicles are originals, some with fantastic history being given the beans good 'n' proper. There are parades as well, this year they include the Stirling Moss parade, D-Day parade, Cooper Car parade and 1959 TT parade. The paying public, along with mechanics and officials tend to dress in clothing reminiscent of the era too, which may sound a bit naff, but it fits in brilliantly with the event. Oh, and how many motor racing events can you turn up to and they have a 10 minute air display at about 08.15 (usually with a Spitfire - well, it was an RAF airfield during WW2............) and around 7pm when the track closes. https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/goodwood-revival/ Some 2018 highlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1tXSlUAZXw Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Tony oily bike on September 27, 2019, 10:52:28 AM Here’s a music prog about an eccentric chap known as Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure, (the one, the only) John Otway. Its scheduled to be on London Live – Wed 2nd October 22.15 “London Live”.TV Channel. Sun 8th Dec 2019 Ch4 9pm Guy attempts a re-creation of the motorcycle jump from the film The Great Escape, but with the difference that he wants to clear both fences. It’s worth noting that although Steve McQueen had the lead role of Hilts (who stole the bike etc etc), it was his good friend Bud Ekins who performed the jump sequence. McQueen & Ekins worked together in the film Bullitt, most notably during the car chase as the guy on a motorcycle takes a tumble is Bud, whislt McQueen’s character waits and looks over his shoulder waiting for the poor motorcyclist get to his feet before chasing after the Charger. The story of the Great Escape motorcycle side of things from the Bud & Dave Ekins website https://www.budanddaveekins.com/the-great-escape-jump/ Back in 2009, The Sunday Times did what was titled as a renactment of the (single) jump using a Meriden Triumph twin which is considerably closer to the film bike than the machine used in Guy's programme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4DE3r-x7FM Some other bits about McQueen from previous threads http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=6imopqb277kjolfm4o0g6b1n13&topic=10413.0 http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=6imopqb277kjolfm4o0g6b1n13&topic=10501.0 Go to page two for pics of a TR6 bike ridden by McQueen in the film, taken at the 2018 Goodwood Revival http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16628.15 Title: Re: Programmes coming up on the tele Post by: Manky Monkey on December 04, 2019, 10:21:52 AM Cool!
