ballast resistor

Did any of the Reliants have a ballast resistor? . All the ones Ive seen on other makes are piggy backed on to the coil, but this doesnt have one . I didnt see one in the original car engine bay if it was mounted remotely, but could've missed it.

Some did, some didn't. Depends on the coil you've got. Mounted on the bulkhead I think.

hmmm ,might've missed it! I thought they only came in to play AFTER the engine was started? So maybe the lack of it isnt preventing the engine at least firing.

I've never fitted one on any of my trikes, though Flap had problems with his engine melting the plastic pivot of the points. Ran fine until the points stopped operating. A resistor fixed it.

right then theres 2 types of resistor 1 keeps a constant 12v feed to the coil whilst cranking 2nd reduces voltage to keep the coil at say a steady 9-11.5v but as a general guide. a coil from an 850 mini will run any reliant without points probs so use a mini coil and delete the ballast resistor!

As Toad said, 12v coil, you do not need a Ballast resistor, 9v coil, you do! Morrag
