Said I would do a how to on painting my letest helmet project, so here goes:

This started out life like this

Helmet paint how to....

After removing ALL the fittings, visor, vents, trim etc it was scuffed all ver with a Red scotchbrite pad until it was completely matt finish! I then de-greased it with white spirit, masked off the edges, visor opening, and behind all the vents, and gave it three coats of white primer. After a night in the airing cupboard (as it's now a touch chilly in the garage), this was then scuffed with a grey scotchbrie pad and given three coats of Signal Yellow.

Once this was dried, I then masked out the centre line with 2mm Blue fine line tape, and then laid out 3mm blue fine line tape as the edge of the centre stripe.

The rest was then masked off using masking tape and plain drawing paper.

Then two coats of black, and remove the masking tape before the paint has 'set', to avoid hard lines where the masking tape was.

Now time for a brew or two, before the interesting 'airbrush-y' type stuff starts tomorrow!!!

Part two to follow, if you're all interested!!!! Grin

Are you using spray cans or a proper spray gun? I shall tune in for part 2  Grin

Clive's a proper paintist, so I'd imagine spray gun rather than rattle cans Lynne, though the process would be the same. I've seen some stunning results from spray cans.

For small jobs like helmets spray cans actually work really well. It's just when you have a large area to cover, you end up with uneven coverage, and the spray gun comes into play!!!

Part two is a very short part, as I decided it needed some............bling! So out came the airbrush, and it got a dusting or two of Acrylic pearl ink! Never tried this stuff before, but wow I'm impressed, and it will look awesome once cleared! A coat of Medea Top Coat (A kind of clear 'varnish' that'll protect this stuff should I mess up later on down the line!), and back into the airing cupboard!!!!

Interesting!

I need a new helmet but can't find one I like the graphics on - obviously the answer is to get one painted!

Can you buy these specialised paints in small amounts? When Ive priced up some little paint jobs (of which I know naff all Grin) It worked out expensive for a pot of paint to do 'just a touch " of a particular colour.

Yes buddy. Auto Air, which I personally can't get on with, comes in as small amount as 4oz bottles, most others you can get in 2oz bottles!
