Title: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2016
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 17, 2016, 11:01:05 PM
Just received the entry form for this year's show, (hand delivered by one of the organisers).
Sunday the 8th of May.
Memorial Park, Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Obviously we'll leave it till the last minute, then panic, like we always do, but start planning guys :)

There's a chance that i might be at Basingstoke with a different group.    :o

But it would mean that I could come in a car (possibly Mike's Jag) and drive right onto the field.

Is anywhere on a bus route?? mine just seems to wander, 20 minute trip to town takes 45 minutes, and that's using the horrid bus lanes that Plymouth seems to be plagued with

Right chaps -time to start panicking.
The entry form for this needs to be in by the end of this month, so we need a list of those who can definitely come along & what they'll be bringing. Who's up for this?

Manky Monkey -Ford Popular pick-up & XS650 Yamaha chop.
Olds                -"Deliverance" Reliant trike.

Ho hum. Not looking good is it. :(
A real shame as this is a very good do. With vehicles of all types, a reasonable autojumble, within easy walking distance of a large modern shopping centre (for those who don't want to stay at the show all day) and it's FREE for both exhibitors and visitors.
Being free always ensures a good turn out of interested public.

Maybe it's time to give the MMMotors pitch a rest? As you say, a shame after we've been there for around 10 years, but if we can't fill our pitch, maybe we should take a year off? If so though, we need to decide soon to give those listed time to enter individually if they want to.
Should we stay or should we go?

Long story mate.
Short version, we lost my mother in law in June 14, dad in Dec 14 and mum in March 15 all through cancer. Needless to say the family and I were not in a good place for some time and doing the probate for my parents myself took all my time and energy.
A few other of life's little problems came and kicked me In the nuts for good measure just to remind me who's boss.
Only just starting to get back to some kind of normal.

Yours Phunkie?

Looks rather nice and a little bit trick me thinks... are the wheels "minilites" by chance?

The number of Magnettes we used to see ironed-up as stock cars back in the day was astounding, nice to see one in such good condition.  ;)

Yeh, got rid of the Roadster and bought this. It's not as good as it initially appears, though. The "Minilites" came with the car and have been replaced with some banded Magnette ones. The car is a little lower now as well. Lots of ideas in the pipeline. Another block and crank at Roes as we speak.
I have been lucky enough to be able to obtain pretty much all I need in second hand parts from an ex British stock car champion, I've known him for years, Gray Davis (his usage of cars was only one a year, believe it or not)

Anyway, there you go .............

The entry form has to be in by the 1st of April so I've dropped a note in at one of the organisers' houses explaining we haven't got many on our list yet this year but asking if we can have our normal pitch & we'll hopefully fill it on the day.

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2016
Post by: Manky Monkey on March 31, 2016, 07:50:31 PM
The organiser rang me this afternoon to confirm we can have a pitch without filling in the usual paperwork -in his words, We trust you lot.
So I assume we'll be in our usual spot. He says they'll allocate 24 vehicle passes to us nearer the time.
More names on the list please chaps :)

15 vehicle passes delivered, with more available if we need 'em.

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2016
Post by: Manky Monkey on April 09, 2016, 07:42:12 PM
Take it easy mate. Of course. We've got a big pitch to fill & not many vehicles this year.

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2016
Post by: JayJay on April 26, 2016, 11:03:21 PM
I love this show. It has a lot of character.  The interest in the Manky stand last year was brilliant.  Even if there is less in the Manky pitch this year there are still interesting vehicles to look at. It's also great to meet up with faces that perhaps we don't get to see at other meetings.

I would be sad if this show ever closed. I don't know how they do it. I think programme sales, stalls and parking are their only revenue plus they are always so well organised.

I will just be in my car parked in the disabled parking bit. If I could just bring my own loo with me, this show would be perfect!  8)  ;D

Post by: Manky Monkey on April 27, 2016, 05:43:54 PM
I agree Jay. It's easy to take events for granted when they're on your doorstep & it'd be a terrible shame if this one ever ceased to be. I try to support local things whenever I can, but we're struggling to fill the pitch this year. We've got a few friends of friends who have said they'll come along, but more Monkeys are always welcome.
Got no way of getting the Pop there again this year, so just my bike -assuming it's finished in time.

O.K chaps. Last role call for this.
Really struggling to find exhibitors this time, so maybe we should make this the last one? We've had a pitch at this show for the last 10 years, so haven't done bad, but maybe we've just done it now. Not even sure my own motorcycle will be on show this time as I haven't got any way of getting it there unless I can get it running & MOT'd in the next couple of days. My Pop definitely won't be there.
I've got vehicle passes here, which just need the vehicle registration writing on them, so I can either post them out this week, or meet people at the entrance gate as we usually do.
So, who can definitely make it?

Sorry but I'm not sure that I can make it this year Andy.  :'(  Not mot'd. Nothing wrong with the trike, it's me thats unroadworthy. :( Will try my best and see what happens this week as I really want to be there.

Everything to be onsite by 10.30 at the latest. I'm usually there by 8.30 -9 ish. Make it 9.
If there's only a few of us, we'll just have to move around a lot!
So

Manky -XS650 Yamaha.
Phunkie - MG Magnette.
Clive - motorcycle -?
Tom - XS650 Yamaha -if we can arrange to get it there.
Muffin - Reliant trike.
Craig - Titan trike.
Goose - Yamaha XV750.
Lunatic Senior - '28 Ford model A sedan.
Lunatic Senior's mate - Ford model A pick-up.

Have I forgotten anyone? Does anyone have a pop-up gazebo type thingy we can use for the day?

Couple of motorcycles loaded in a hire van, along with banners, a box of MMMotors T shirts & stickers & a couple of camping chairs. Could probably do with some sort of camping table if anyone has one.
I've got entry tickets so if you're bringing a vehicle along & the marshals don't wave you through as they normally do, give me a shout & I'll nip up to the gate with one. I'll aim to be there by 9. Everyone to be onsite by 10.30 absolute latest. We've got less vehicles than usual, so if you fancy bringing something unusual along, just turn up & join us. The show runs from 10.30 ish - 5ish. Free entry, with £2 parking. S'posed to be a lovely day tomorrow so come on down  ;)
Oh yeah, this year's trophy. We always throw something together at the last minute then decide who to give it to on the day, usually for enthusiastic support of the whole modified vehicle scene. As was suggested last year, this year's bling's been officially designated the Markju Memorial Trophy, in memory of former forum member Mark Juggins, who died of cancer 7 months ago. We're starting to forget who's already received one, so I'm throwing it open to you lot. Tell me who deserves it. Ideally someone who'll be there tomorrow, but if not, I'm happy to deliver it to the worthy recipient. Suggestions please, (PM me if you'd rather do it anonymously, but do it this evening). I'll email this photo to Mark's widow, just to prove we kept our promise.
See you bright 'n' early tomorrow chaps.  ;D

Trophy looks good Andy. Tattoos look good too. Whose arm was that?

Did my shopping tonight so bought a big tray of doughnuts, a treacle tart and some mini choc rolls so that should help feed us. I did stress to the checkout lady that they weren't all for me. That's why I'm telling you now so I don't get tempted. :-[

Doughnuts !
I will be there.
Sans trike unfortunately but with a late 70s trail bike. Feel a bit of a fraud as it's not exactly customised but it's the best I can manage at the mo. :(
The well inked arm and grubby fingers belong to  'lunatic'. :)

Finally home after returning various motorcycles & vans & putting everything away. Absolutely shattered now. Partly the walking about & chatting all day but mostly the blazing heat -good job BikerGran & Chris's Dad brought gazebos so we had somewhere to shelter from the sun & eat cake.
I'll go through my photos tomorrow & post them here -did anyone else take any? -but for now, a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the effort. Very proud of you all. ;D
Hope I managed to chat to everyone. I tried to say Goodbye to as many as I could. I had a great day, as always, & hope you did too. Thank you.

Oh & this year's trophy went to Lunatic Senior, who's 1928 model A Ford didn't quite make it the 3 miles across Basingstoke, leaving him waiting for his motor to cool down before limping home again, (condenser trouble).

Same time, same place next year chaps?

Yep,what Olds said it was good to meet up and talk to old and new monkeys, i haven't spoken to Goose, Clive or Lunatic before, nice to meet you all.
Thanks Andy and co for putting it all together, still a good show of vehicles for the pitch and somewhere for us monkeys to gather. Wouldn't be the same without the pitch, once again thanks Andy for getting it all together.

:) What a great day, my first wonder round the rally I was greeted by a chap with a long beard like my own he was exhibiting a steam roller, his words were Manky Monkey Motors having read this on my t shirt, I always go on that site to look at the photos, just goes to show we are looked at by the outside world.
Good to meet and have a chat with fellow Monkeys thank you all for making it a great day :) :-*

:) Nice photos, the tractor with the art work belongs to a friend of ours, the last sort of person that I would have thought would have that put all over a tractor, although saying that he owns the Ford Mustang engine trike that was on show as well.

Well if you looked as menacing in their rear view mirror as you did when you drove onto the Manky pitch then it's a wonder you managed to catch up with them at all!  We all know you are a cuddly bunny really.  :)

It was a lovely day. As always great to see those who were able to make it. Nice to see some partners too, Mike, Sharon, Jane (also Mum) and Sue.

The display looked great even though there was less to be displayed. If only we had known Basil with the Mustang trike and Sarah Jane with a Hornet were stuck for somewhere to park. I am sure we would have welcomed them.

Plenty of interest though especially lots of questions for Pete. We were a bit worried when he disappeared because those of us sitting in the shade would get asked instead.  ???

Thanks to Andy for organising it as always. One benefit for your hard work, you haven't got to buy any food for a couple of days and with all that sugar you will have loads of energy to get lots of jobs done.

Regarding what you said recently, you are not really thinking of calling time on the Manky Pitch are you? Just think of all the projects that will be ready for next year. Well probably not the pop .... :P  ;)

Didn't actually take any cake home with me, although there's a little in Loon's workshop fridge. We managed to distribute most of it to the needy :)
I say it every year Jay -as the numbers dwindle it gets tougher to motivate the rest to take part & we have to call in more non forum members, which kinda defeats the point of it all. It's not really much to organise -the biggest job for me is moving my own unfinished projects about before & after the event -& I do enjoy it on the day & appreciate all those who come along, but we really do need more vehicles! :)

Shame that you didn't come Mike, you could have got a good look at Twisted's trike (and Goose's bike. sorry no pics)

. the biggest job for me is moving my own unfinished projects about before & after the event -

Hopefully that won't be a problem by next year Andy. The bike is nearly done so that just leaves the Pop. (and custom trailer for the XS  ;) )
Baychimp's trike should also be on the road by then (It will, won't it Bob)
Barring some disaster I'm up for next year with the trike or something, but I realise that unless there are enough vehicles to fill the pitch we may have to call it a day.

And next year I WILL have some sort of campervan to put on show, even though I haven't built it myself!

Here's a promise and I can hear Chevy Rick laughing as he reads this; next year I'll come to the shindig on my trike! And no I am not writing this in my sleep!  :P

And if you don't feel fit enough to ride it that far (and so early in the morning!) - you could put it on the dolly and bring it that way!

Dave, (Loony's Dad), receiving the 2016 Markju Memorial Trophy, given as a Hard Luck trophy this year after his 1928 model A Ford broke down on the 3 mile journey to the show.

Right, that's my lot. So next year we get organised early & do this thing properly! -maybe. Thanks again to everyone who supported us, either by bringing along a vehicle, or just taking the time to come & say Hello. It was a pleasure.  :-*

Great pics Andy. Shame I couldn't get there this year, I didn't get back to Basingstoke until 5:30 and by that time you had all b--gered  off.
