Yes, I can see that I'm going to need a reverse gear, and also maybe an auto box.  Could get a Kliktronic but the buttons are generally thumb operated and it's my thumbs that have the worst arthritis.

I love Gertie and as you know, I'm not keen on car-engined trikes, but needs must if that's what it takes to keep me on the road.

Also after giving it a good clean-up today I'm wondering if I should go the Rat route, cos cleaning hurts too, but you can get a trigger thing to operate a spray can...............................

I work for travelling expenses & Jaffa cakes!
Would be a shame to rat it Hon. I'm not keen on bike conversions but yours is one of the few that look "right". Looks like a nice practical touring trike.
Reverse? -you'll be wanting one of them Reliant thingys then.  Grin

Wasn't serious about ratting it - couldn't do that to Gertie, I know I don't wash her often or polish her at all, but then she don't ask me to!  Had a number of folks tell me how nice she is at Calstock this weekend - it's rather good to be able to help someone who's building (or rather planning) a trike - he was saying he didn't have the skills to shorten the axle, but he hadn't thought of getting it done for him by someone who has!

Steve & I have spoken several times about mating auto boxes to Reliants. Can't be that difficult, just a matter of finding one that's physically small enough. I've seen several Reliants fitted into sidecar outfits with Ural gearboxes. That'd give you a foot gearchange like a bike. This one was at this year's BMF show in Peterborough & had a hydraulic clutch conversion too.

Scrapped a nissan micra with an auto box earlier this year. Probably would have been suitable?

Took trike out for a run down the street tonight. F**k me, it is so much different from a bike. I turned it around at the end of the street thinking any minute it going to topple over but of course it didn't. I think it's gonna take a long time to get used to sitting upright when going round corners instead of leaning. I must admit though I'm really chuffed at the way it's coming together and that I've actually had my first ride on it...................................GREAT.

One word of advice. Do not put your feet down when you stop. It hurts when you run over your foot

Done that several times while pushing trikes about. You're right -it hurts!  Shocked

Was the main thing Bruce warned me about the first time I got on my trike!

Most common mistake I've found with novice trikers is forgetting the extra width when pulling up at the roadside & scuffing the rear tyre along the curb.
