I just nipped down the shed. The Beetle lump is 14 ins, the 'clean' case is 16ins, and the Reliant box is 15ins, making 45 ins.
Thats right , tbone. I just saw your new post

Thats right. Sorry I did'nt make it clearer. It would be nice to use the longer case, as I would only have to use one adaptor plate, but it would have made it all too long for the frame as it is, and I want to make it shorter. Below is a shot with the short bellhousing fitted. I photoshopped it, so it does not show the gap needed between the boxes.

Thanks Rod. Trouble is I need to get a Reliant axle now as the Bedford one in the pic is offset to the right. I was going to solve it by having a short prop, but there might not be enough room. It has it's benefits as the Bedford axle needs the 17 inch Ford pop wheels to work with the axle ratio, whereas a piggy axle will obviously match the gearbox, and I can use a pair of 15 inch VW wheels I have instead.
I took some pics just now of the drive train. First off is the shaft off the old VW box. In the car it goes through the diff and screws into the gearbox input at the back.

Next is the van bell housing. The shaft fits nicely, and notice the lovely flat surface where the adaptor plate will bolt on.

Finally the Piggy box. I want to join the VW shaft to the input shaft, and was going to look for three or four Reliant clutch plates, cut the centres out and somehow weld them into a large diameter tube which I could weld onto the VW shaft. My next question is, could any of the machinists that are on the site make a sleeve which would fit over the reliant splines, without charging an arm & leg/mortgage/selling first born ect?

Not quite up on these 'boxes ...... So youre after a shaft/tube with an internal spline ?......1/2 way thro' ,or all the waythro'? I heard of a guy local to me (miles from you) who has loads of machinery set up on his farm. He has just got a splining tool ,but Im not sure whether it does external or internal splines. I'll ask him today,if I can contact him.

You're looking for the Reliant friction plates Doug? Not the sprung pressure plate? I've got a couple of old ones in my spares pile if they're any use. Could use 2 welded either side of a bit of plain tube to make the spacer/adaptor you're after.

How wide are they then ? 1 1/2" each? belt and braces ,would need a bit more than that?? Just spoke to the machinery guy ,he's not confident enuf to do a spline for a "customer" yet ,sorry!

Thats all right Rod. I think the clutch plate centre will work as long as I'm careful with it.
Andy. If you could find the clutch plates & find how much the post will be, that will be great. Below is a very quick microsoft paint drawing of what I have in mind.
I have a 1300 single port, which is only 40hp on a good day. The 1500 is 44hp and 1600 are only 50. I'm sure the piggy box can handle that.

Reliants are supposedly 40bhp though I think that's wildly optimistic! I think the clutch centres are made of plasticine -not sure how well they'll weld, but I'll dig them out & bung 'em in a jiffy bag for you Doug.
