Title: mouse's new trike project :-)
Post by: mouse on January 03, 2008, 08:13:24 PM
Right where do i begin I'm useless with all this typing stuff so your gonna have to bear with me  ;D
the picture below is my current trike i built it 2 years ago and it was my first attempt at building a trike
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/cx500-1.jpg)
I'm still learning as i go and screw up at least once a day  ;D
my next trike is going to be (hopefully) lol a 70's style chopper trike
the axle is a narrowed and offset reliant
the engine is a Honda ntv 600 v twin the forks are from several different Kawasaki's to get the length i required
The axle i used is my old one from my first build i did the unforgivable thing.I welded it solid and yep you got it
it broke in several place so i replaced it on my first trike and saved it for this build.
Ive replaced the axle tubes with much strong tubes i will include some pics.
Ive narrowed down to 37inch wide to allow for the 12inch wide tyres  :o
The wheels are from a dodge they are 5 stud so i had to figure the pcd out
which took a bit of head scratching lol
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/80fd_1.jpg)
IM going to keep adding to this bit by bit as i go  ;D

Sounds good.  8) Those wheels will look the part on a 70s trike. 12" wide, yes please!! ;D
And remember, everytime you screw something up, you learn something new!

Yeah, look at me -I'm a genius!  :P
Nice one Mr Mouse. Keep us updated please.  ;)

the next job i had to do was to alter the reliant 4 stud hubs to take 5 stud
once i had sorted the pcd out which turned out to be 119MM then it was a case of dividing the diameter of the circle by 5 to get the correct wheel stud hole position.I took the reliant hubs of the shafts put the hubs in my lathe and turned um down to a circle form the original reliant square.Pictures to follow.
next job was to turn a steel plate i had down to 130mm for my new hubs
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00014.jpg)
i left a small flange on the inside of the new hud to take the old reliant hub that i had turned down

cheers m8 ive only just got this lathe its my first lathe so its a big learning curve for me right now
i tell ya summat i wish i had bought one years ago

Doing a great job there!
Those wheels are bloody lovely. Looking forward to more on your build, sounds like it'll be a good looking trike!

cheers for the comments guys
and pie fingers croseed its gonna be a good looking trike m8

Very nice work, Loved the first trike, if only I could build like that. Very tasty m8. 12 inch wheels, them's not big them's bloody huge. Don't forget though...size is'nt everything lol.

Another absolute belter, the trikes on this site are getting better and better,I'm getting worried now

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)
Post by: mouse on January 05, 2008, 09:25:36 AM
with the hubs turned down and the new hub adapters ready to drill and weld to the reliant hubs
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00017.jpg)
i left the new hubs a lot bigger than and thicker than i needed so i could skim them to get rid of any distortion caused by the welding
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00012-1.jpg)
after a bit of research good old goggle lol
i found that the pcd of my new wheels was the same pcd as a BMW 3 series and the trippy thing was thats the car i drive  ;D
I bought some BMW 3 series front brake disks they were massive  :o i had to machine them down to the same size as vw golf disks as i was using mankys brill idea of the golf callipers for my braking system
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/golfbrakes.jpg)
the new hub fitted into the bmw disk
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00011.jpg)
i hope im not boring people to much here with my babble i just hope this will be of some help to people with there future trike builds.
I know without sites like this one i wouldnt of been able to do half the things i do now. The info ive picked up from this site as been so valuable its saved me a lot of money and a lot of swearing lol

Hi Mouse....dont worry your not babbling ;D

Its good to see someone using there imagination rather than just buying bits to bolt together. I think a few of us would like our own lathe though.
Keep up the good work ;D

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)

that is NOT babbling as i am watching with interest as i have just bought a lathe to do as your doing so please carry on mouse

Yup, carry on babbling mate. It's just the sort of info that people are always asking for.  ;)
What may seem blindingly obvious to you could well be a revelation to someone else so post away Sir!  :)
Piccies really are worth a thousand words by the way.

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)
Post by: mouse on January 05, 2008, 07:08:34 PM
I shortened the half shafts measuring and cutting them was a very worrying time  :o lol one chance only yikes now me i like to have at least 6 attempts at things  ;D ;D
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00026.jpg)
This is them sleeved with a solid round bar that i bored out to suit the size of the half shafts and belive it or not both half shafts where a differnt size good ole reliant  ;D
onec i had them bored out to the correct size i simply slid the half shafts into the bars which are now tubes. And welded them up with my mates very good oil filled kick ass stick welder lol at 160 amps  ;D fingers crossed its all going to be strong enough

Mouse, just a bit of info you might find useful, the bloke who did the joining and welding on mine has had plenty of experience doing the same with Escort axles for rally cars and his tried and tested method includes drilling and pinning using engineering dowel then welded in and spun up on the lathe to get it balanced.
Here's a picture of mine so you can see what I mean.

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)
Post by: mouse on January 05, 2008, 09:17:16 PM
cool pie  i can add the pins no problem thanks (scuttles off to the workshop to sort it out)  ;D

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)

Make sure it's ENGINEERING DOWEL though!

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)
Post by: mouse on January 06, 2008, 09:30:43 AM
next stage im my axle build
because they axle tubes were broken from my previous screw up  ::)
errr welding the axle solid to my last trike :o not a good idea lol
heres the diff with whats left of the tube
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/diff.jpg)
heres the other end  :o
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/axletube.jpg)
A good lesson to be learned there DONT SOLID WELD A RELAINT AXLE IT DONT LIKE IT
me being a right muppet did it twice hows that for being stupid  ;D ;D two axles knackerd
i know some people weld them and get away with it
this is a mock up of the new tubes and diff in place between the wheels
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/axletubes1.jpg)
I internal and external sleeved the remains of the axle tubes with very strong 2" inch ID 5MM wall thick tube a bit OTT but once or should that be twice bitten i ain't taken any chance with another axle breaking i was lucky to survive that last two breaks.

I'm a Postie, not an engineer, but I always try to stress here -SAFETY FIRST. I'd hate anyone to get injured after following our advice, (& I can't afford the lawsuits!), so always better to over-engineer than chance it. If you're not competent to do the job yourself, find someone who is. We pinned the narrowed axle on Flap's orange trike in exactly the same way.

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)

Right carrying on from where i left off  ;D
but before i do ****please read**** This is my build if you are going to copy any of my ideas please check and double check that they are going to do the job for you UNDER no circumstance are MANKY MONKEY MOTORS responsible for anything i do or anything i put on this web site .****
Mick aka mouse
Next job i did was to make a loop to go over the axle for added strength the one thing i did want was to be able to split the diff if i had any problems in the future.
so i machined a solid piece of bar to fit the inside of the tube i was using as my loop.
i made the loop then cut it in half and inserted the machineing piece in the ends of the tube which i then drilled and bolted. I then welded the loop to the axle tube all i have to do now is unbolt the two bolts and i can split the diff ;D

looking good mouse but whats with the disclaimer you don't here them saying things like that on blue peter and belive me toilet tubes can be deadly if you dont do them right  ;D

Title: Re: mouse's new trike project :-)

I'd just like to point out, MMMotors do not condone the use of toilet tubes as axles.

Post by: mouse on January 16, 2008, 09:33:01 AM
next job was to mount the brake callipers i used vw golf callipers and carriers with BMW 3 series front 5 stud disks.I had to turn the disks down in size to math the size of a vw golf disk that meant turning the diameter as well as the thickness of them
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00015-1.jpg)
i cut a 6mm plate out to mountn the carriers on it also doubles up to hold the bearing in the axle
then it was a case of bolting it all together

they were very thick disks and they are still within the "do not use under a certain thikness limit"  ;D

yep excellent work mouse . i tried turning down the faces of a pair of capri twin vented discs before and it never went to plan , i was told later i needed an attachment that wouild allow both sides of the disc to be machined at once to keep them dead true or youll get a wobbly pedal as the two faces will be slightly off from one another . dont know if that helps in anyway nut judging from your last photo all you have to do is attach it to the two pipes sticking out of the yellow machine and hey presto . keep up the good work  ;D

right in answer to your disk turning down question
i guess time will tell all i can say is i have used my clock
(http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c355/007mouse/new%20trike/DSC00015-2.jpg)
and centralised the turning IE the same amount of either side of the disk
so its fingers crossed that i don't get any brake peddle jumping if i do i will firmly blame you pmsl  ;D

I like that!  The tank looks nicely in proportion with the engine, nice comfy single seat and a fat back end, perfect!
Looks as though there's gonna be some nice trikes about this year.

Looking very good there Mr Mouse. Very long forks. What are they from? Maybe lower the headstock a little? Based on my experience with the first one I built

Sharon's XS750 (http://mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/Trikespageimages/sharon/trike.htm)

I'd say keep the centre of gravity as low as you can & think about a fork brace.
Cool lookin' ride though  8)
I'm really looking forward to this year's riding season. Anyone up for the 2nd annual MonkeyNuts Run?

thanks for your comments
Andy you say to lower the headstock
can you elaborate on this please  ;D
the forks are Kawasaki gpz900 bottoms with kwak Klr 600 tubes and and guzzi headstock

great looking stuff Mouse, think manky meant was lower the headstock"front end" till the headstock is about 8 inches above"roughly" the heads of the motor :) making the front lower and overall length longer

cheers m8 thats what i thought he meant too but i wasnt sure about the extra lenght (rake)  that would cause with the forks

Post by: VALLEYSBOY on February 06, 2008, 07:53:04 PM
well as you have atm you can slide the front end down just for looks sake neat idea having that little frame at the front for holding the front end together :-)

I just meant that a high steering head on my first trike build made the steering very heavy & awkward. We always use standard length forks now & mount them low & kicked out. Looks good, (in my humble opinion), & helps stability. Does look nice Mouse.

cool m8 its help like this i need andy
if the extra rake aint gonna hurt then its a lower headstock for me then  ;D

I'm no expert mate. I can only go on personal experience with my own builds. I know too much trail's supposed to be a bad thing, but it's never caused us any problems. However, 5 inch over length forks & a high headstock on the Yam trike made the steering very clumsy. Every trike's different & there's loads of other variables that can adversely affect handling. Centre of gravity too high, wheelbase too narrow or too short, blah, blah, blah.
Try it & see?

makes sense as to how quick its all going , how did you manage to do it (brake your back) and did it help you become so machanicly artistic or just give you the time to concentrate ?. not on the same scale but i snapped my leg on my 25th birthday whilst dancing ( i say dancing in the loosest possible way ) now got a pin and a click every morning but didnt help with any artistic flare or ability though.

taz I'm on my way with my biggest hammer and a roll of tape pmsl
BG that was rather clumsy of you  ;D (ouch)
bummer
i broke my back while working for a portable traffic light company
i was loading a trailer into the back of a transit van by pushing it up two planks of wood.
One of the planks broke and i like a muppet held onto the trailer which contained the generator two traffic lights and all the road signs (very heavy)
a lot of my insides popped outside  :o
and my back broke i spent ages in hospital and was told that i would end up in a wheel chair later in life that was 25 ish years ago I'm still mobile right now but in s**t loads of pain i take morphine on a regular basis. My spins full of arthritis  :(
I ve always been into building things i took my first gearbox out of a car when i was 12 lol and I'm still learning as i go  ??? lol I'm no expert i still screw up on a regular basis  ;D

Hey up madron  ;D
dude if you only knew what trouble Ive had painting this trike.
Its no wonder i have no hair left  :o
The first mudguard two hard shelled black fly things decided to have a dance on my nice new wet paint and the little bleeders weren't happy with that. They had to go and die in my paint but before they died they spread the legs all over the frigging place  ;D  ::)
The second mudguard well no flies on that one but my new hot air gun decided to blow very hot silver particles all over the still wet paint  >:( >:(
I am now as we speak waiting for a new supply of paint to redo the mudguard  :o

I showed my trike's rolling chassis at last year's Basingstoke transport festival. Showing it again this year & it's still not finished! I'll take all the help I can get. Use your best crayon to scribble us some words & we'll tidy 'em up for you & make 'em legible.  ;)
I reckon the least you can do for the ol' man is give his scooter a fresh lick of paint.
And some fat rubber.
And maybe nitrous.... ;D

Most enjoyable & memorable ride on a trike was on my last one, (now Ska Man's), in the pouring rain on the Basingstoke ring road. Power sliding it sideways round & round one of the roundabouts, soaked to the skin but giggling like a loony.  ;D

A bit of info for ya i hope it helps

Right where do I begin?
I’m disabled so I don’t have to go the msva route to get my vehicles registered.
But most of this information will be of some help to you trike builders out there.
Before I started to build my trike I went to my local Dvla office in Nottingham
I asked for a VIN Vehicle Identification number and was told that I couldn’t have one
Until I had completed my trike build and took it to the Dvla office for inspection.
Some Dvla offices will issue you with a VIN before you start your build
It’s worth asking them as its easer to stamp the VIN onto the headstock prior to the build.
And it saves you having to sand off your lovely new paint or powder coat to try and stamp the numbers on.
I went away with my tail between my legs and got on with the build once I had built my trike the fun started.
I had to make an appointment at the Dvla office so I could have the trike inspected
All the happened on that day was the inspector looked at the trike asked a few question i.e. what’s it made out of? What’s the size of the engine? And what disabled adaptations are on the trike.
They were satisfied with all this information and issued me with a VIN number and a letter I was then told I had to get the number stamped into the headstock then I was to have it verified by a garage and the garage had to emboss the letter with the old type mot stamp.
Once I got that done I had to return to the Dvla office once again with the verified letter
The inspector then told me I had to go and get a mot and insurance on my trike before they could proceed any further with the registration.
I also had a hand full of forms I had to fill in and was told that they had to be filled in correctly with all the right information if not they would not carry on with the registration process.
The forms are ok to fill in nothing too hard to figure out if you have access to the internet you can find most the answers to the questions.
Most of the questions relate to the weight of the trike you need a weigh bridge certificate for that
You also have to give the trike a make and model i.e. mine is Make rodent Model mouse
You can use anything as long as it’s not a registered name i.e. ford
Some of the other questions are taxation class which is tricycle
As I said most of the question are easily answered
But make sure you answer them all

The weight certificate only cost me £6 and was the easiest part of the process lol.
Now I hope your following this as I’m not very good with the written word lol
Armed with all my documents correctly filled in
My weight certificate, mot and insurance.
And you will need proof of your address a recent power bill and it can’t be too old or they won’t accept it you will also need a driving licence or passport.
And all your receipts from the build
And make sure you keep all your receipts they do check them.
As my trike was a ground up build and I didn’t have any previous registration documents
I had to pay for a new registration document £55 mine is a Q plate
I also had to pay for the vehicle tax £66 you don’t have a choice you have to pay this on the day.
The registration process took me 6 weeks to sort out 300 miles and a lot of stress but don’t let that put you off.
It’s one hell of a good feeling when you achieve it all.
One more thing before I forget they will issue you with a letter that gives you permission to get a number plate made
There are only a hand full of places that will make number plates now and it’s like trying to get blood out of a stone lol they have to be registered with Swansea
You will need the letter from the Dvla a power bill driving licence or passport
Just to get your number plate made lol
Most of all don’t let um grind ya down and keep smiling through it you will get there in the end
This is they way it happend for me i have heard of others doing it totaly differnt so please use this as a rough guide.

Well done! it sounds like a lot of hard work, not much room on that seat though.... ;D

I know that there is different ways of doing things with diferent dvla places, Dale has had some problems with Birmingham when registering an imported car, and yet Notts were fine ,have fun x

I seem to remember Yoda, (the mighty webmaster who originally set up this site for me), telling me that being disabled, he was allowed to register 2 a year. I've got a feeling he also said that if it was sold on to an able bodied rider & the adaptions removed, it should be re-registered. Could well be wrong though. NABD, the National Assosciation for Bikers with a Disability, should be able to tell you. BikerGran belongs to it. Check their website here:

NABD (http://www.nabd.org.uk/index.htm)

I do indeed belong to the NABD but wouldn't try to tell anyone what's what with regard to registering trikes etc!

If you can't find the info on the main site just drop them an email and you'll get a definitive answer - the organisation is recognised as the leading authority on disbled riding not only in Britain but in Europe too!
