The old gaffers in question are small boats, owned by the Isle of Wight yachting club -see, you learn all sorts of useful info here.

It really is a nice way to spend a few hours doing "not a lot" Wink

No I didn't. No need to take my lifebelt then. I assumed that cos the Needles are rocks in the sea it'd be a boat trip. Do they have submersible buses then?

No submersible buses left the last one got washed away on a spring tide in 1966 Wink

The buses do go out to the Needles via Alum Bay Pleasure Park, its a narrow winding "edge of the cliffs" road. Great view point to the west to Bournemouth/Swanage.
