The old gaffers in question are small boats, owned by the Isle of Wight yachting club -see, you learn all sorts of useful info here.

For information regarding the Boat Trips go to Favourite Places to Visit and click onto Lymington, Hampshire to find out about Puffin Cruises.
It really is a nice way to spend a few hours doing "not a lot"

No I didn't. No need to take my lifebelt then. I assumed that cos the Needles are rocks in the sea it'd be a boat trip. Do they have submersible buses then?

No submersible buses left the last one got washed away on a spring tide in 1966
The buses do go out to the Needles via Alum Bay Pleasure Park, its a narrow winding "edge of the cliffs" road. Great view point to the west to Bournemouth/Swanage.
