Hello you! Yeah, you do get some odd characters turning up there for a bit of stone hugging don't you.
You looked great, as always.  :-*

Been to Avebury several times, and on the way down we used to stop at the Uffington White Horse.

Uffington. That's a name from the past. Used to fly kites there as a kid, & rode my first bikes there with my mates in my teens. Haven't been up that way for years. The whole Ridgeway trail is great for blowing the cobwebs out of your head. Some nice views & interesting little local historic spots tucked away here & there. Nick Knowles did a series on BBC South called Ridge Riders, taking celebrity bikers along parts of the trail & showing them places of interest. Don't know if it's out on video or DVD but worth a look if you spot it in the bargain bin.

The stone circle doesn't do a lot for me but the Avenue certainly had an odd effect when I went there - I felt a very strong urge to lie down in the avenue - I resisted cos it was rather damp at the time!  This pic was from another visit when I didn't actually walk among the stones so didn't feel anything, must try it again someday!

Yes we remember that programme, always watched it. It was really good. I met Nick Knowles once in Tunbridge Wells shopping centre as his Mum lives in our Town. He's very tall, but really nice, mmmmmmmmmmm :P :P and gave me his autograph ;D ;D
The Avebury circle is a  very  powerful place, when we visited although it was very quiet and no-one else about you had the feeling you weren't alone.

Hi folks,
Used to work at Marlborough as a postman (High Street delivery)

On midsummer morning (night, we used to Start at 4am) one of the lads nearly put his car up the bank.
There were dozens of naked girls dancing round the stones.
We had to sit him down. He was all " Afroth !"

Hi there Gary and welcome.
Glad to see you have found the forum. Would you like me to change your forum name. If so then PM me what name you require and I will do it for you. Looking forward to reading about your trike on here when you get going.

Hiya Tazet (and the rest of the faithful...!)
Many thanks for the welcome.
Yup, I'm raring to lob the phoenix egg into the fire.
I've designed my own house, in Thailand.
The trike is just as exciting (and alot effing cheaper)
The trike is the melting pot of many different motoring traits, all fused together.
It will be with you in a couple of months.

Coo! Durdle Dor.  ;D
Fond memories of riding there with a bunch of mates from Basingstoke back in the late 70s, early 80s. One of those weekends when we didn't have a care in the World, the sun was blazing, the jokey banter flowed as much as the beer & even the inevitable breakdowns couldn't dampen our spirits.
Aah, the impetuousness of youth.  ;D

I hope to get down to the Great Dorset Steam Rally again this year.  3rd year running.  First time came down on my Virago 535 and we had a 'run out' with some of Sid's sons army buddies.  Just passed through Avebury and never got a chance to stop, but it looks awesome.  Unfourtunatly we were in a camper unit last year and it was too much bother takin it back of the site once we had settled in.

Hope to go down in cars this year and camp, if we do I fully intend to back to Avebury to have a walk around.  Supposed to be a great biker friendly pub there.  We passed it and it was full of bikes.

Went to Stone Hendge and was'nt reallt that impressed. :P

There was a hill fort that I fancy going back to see as well, think it was on the A30.  That was when we were heading towards the M5 to get to Barnstable.  Some awesome views from the A30 down towards the South coast, but did'ny stop ::) :'( :'( :'(

Check our visitors guide to Avebury on the main site

Favourite places to visit (http://mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/visit.htm)

I've never actually been to Stonehenge but been past it hundreds of times. Personally I think Avebury has much more atmosphere &, yes, you can climb all over the stones there, whereas Henge is fenced off these days.
If anyone has a favourite place they'd like to recommend, write us a review & we'll add it to the site.

we go to avebury every year when we are at a rally that way - makes for a nice ride out before the drinking ensues, and there is a nice greasy spoon near by, with a lovely girl thats worked there for that last few years who has a huge pair of personalities  ;D

Were's the greasey spoon Sumo as I'm planning a small ride out at work to have lunch at 'The Red Lion' but it has been given some really bad reviews of late, so I may need an allternative. I will be doing a dummy run soon to find out if things have improved or we may use your info. Many thanks m8 ;)

can remember without being there but general direction is turn right out of avebury down the hill and where it picks up the main road there are a few roundabouts. on one of them is a pretty big cafe on the left - not a great deal of help i know but i tried.... its easy when riding, i may well have missed out a few turns haha. ill ask if any of my mates actually know the name of the place

Title: Re: Avebury
Post by: Simple Simon on March 27, 2009, 01:29:11 PM
Many thanks for that Sumo.

I'll take a look and follow your directions to the letter ;). Might be nice to get very lost in that part of the world. :D

Post by: SUMO on March 27, 2009, 01:34:44 PM
i seem to remember quite a long gently curving road that goes up and down quite a bit also... but then again that might be in an entirely different part of the country haha

have sent out messages to friends saying "anyone remember that cafe with the lass with the big tits"  they will all know the one i mean  ;D

The Red Lion was always a great place to eat. Huge portions, (like the lass in the cafe), & good quality too. It does get very busy at weekends though. Very popular with the biking fraternity, (like the lass in the cafe).
