Er, I thought that's what I said, but like I also said, " yer pays yer money..." Rod, look elsewhere,as "Mr Reliant" selected a suitable needle for his motor, I'm sure! anyway, I shall retire......however, if you were but closer, I would fix it for you Wink Wink..Morrag

Same here, we can all offer help and info on the forum.  but there is nothing better than having some one there along side looking and checking your going in the right direction, and to talk to Smiley

Rod , am I right in saying that your engine is totally rebuilt  with new pistons , mains etc and , if yes , were the rings set to the correct gap ? ?

Memory hazy on that one Pete, but he was very thorough, so I reckon they were. The 'short block'turned freely as well.

I wasn't aware that you set a gap in the rings, I just thought you put them on the piston and job done, glad to hear about this before going ahead and rebuilding my engine.
Could you please explain how you go about setting the gap,
Thanks in a dvance

Just pop the rings one at a time into the bores, making sure they are square to the bore using a piston and measure the gaps using feeler gauges.
You should really measure the gaps near the top and bottom of the bores.
Any that have too small a gap should be adjusted, using a small fine flat file. (Reliant ring gap is 0.17 - 0.30mm.)
Remember that rings are easy to snap and also can have very sharp edges.

Not all ring can be gapped. Depends on the type of ring.

Getting older but no wiser! Just using bigger hammers.
The answer to most problems, fire and lots of it.

If your engine has been completely rebuilt, could we assume that it requires running in,and will naturally run hot as it is new and a little tight.
Keep to short no strain drives with variable revs for a running in period and see if temp reduces as mileage on the rebuilt engine increases.
But I'm sure this has been already thought off.
