tbone,    took cluster off and took a gander.
brown wire we couldnt suss was for horn feed, black out to horn
 thick red/white fed lights
the yellow for main split inside unit to main and to the pass light
blue was side light, linked to park light
as you said brown/white was for indicator supply from flasher unit
head lights were what we said. as were indicators.

apart from indicators not flashing think its bang on.  need it to run to see if charge light goes out. should be tomorrow. got carb rebuilt so just jneed to sort gaskets n fire up/

indicators should be fine once there is a load applied.

A thought about your solenoid fault.....is there an earth to the solenoid body?

didnt have at first [earth to solonoid] went to buy another n guy mentioned it so didnt get one.  tried continuity to find earth and tried it but no joy. made have damaged it by putting live to both when messing with it. did work previously when bench ran engine.  can they br reenergised or any thing by putting wires this way or that? know there a sealed unit.

put another solonoid on tbone and worked fine.  the wires we couldnt suss from ignition in the 4 block were one for the park light. two were in and out thru ignition [ dead when ignition off, continuity when on] dont know what they fed.
and the 4th was put there to wind us up, no apparent use. never got live, not earthed.
managed to get shut of a lot of excess wire, lot of earths gone that can be easily earthed at mount.  studied it a bit and ended up untaping a lot i did to simplify. like joining parking light and side light at the front so only one wire to back can  feed sides, parking, number plate and forward markers. simple 4 wire loom from front to back.
once again thanks for your input.
