Title: Cornwall trip - Fri Sept 21 - Mon Sept 24
Post by: BikerGran on November 07, 2006, 09:43:25 PM
The current thinking is like this...

Fri 21 Sept - ride to Bigbury ion Sea, Devon, camp at local campsite, visit Burgh Island.
Sat 22 Sept - ride to Porthcurno, local cam, psite, go the "Proms" show at Minack Theatre (take flags, horns, whistles!)
Sun 23 Sept - ride to as yet unknown event or place of interest in Devon/ Somerset/ Dorset, camp nearby.
Mon 24 Sept - ride home.

Exact route to be decided much nearer the time!

OH AND MANKY WILL BE CAMPING!!!!!!

Quote
if someone else, (Bobbi), wants to organise the Cornwall trip some time in the Summer, I MAY camp there -but only if the majority says I should. Otherwise it's a nice comfy B & B for me.

I'm not worried about what the majority will say!  I'm not necessarily going to organise this but I've started this thread and I don't mind organising the thread.  When it comes to the trip, I can't go to Cornwall without visiting Round Britain Rally locations, so I may not be with the rest of you as I'll have my own agenda.

Questions - what do we want?

Trip to Cornwall - yes.

Via Burgh Island?

Will this be a weekend or a longer trip - a holiday?

Minack Theatre - do we want to see a performance there or just go and  look at it?  A performance would be more spectacular, but it costs about £8 quid each (which doesn't seem bad to me).  If we want to see a show, we'd want to be staying in the near area I think.

Who wants to go on this trip?  Who wants to camp, who wants B&B?  And when do we want to do it?  I would suggest it should be outside the high season, ie the school holidays.  We've got the Monkey Run (or whatever it's called) at the end of April, and I'm pretty tied up in May, and possibly in June but I don't know that yet.

Anyone got answers to any of these?  Anyone got more questions?

Just re-read the oroiginal thread about Minack theatre in the 'favourite places' section, and the original idea belonged to ByzMax - what do you say Biz, what to you want this trip to be?

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?

Its about 164 miles to Bigbury on Sea from Basingstoke.  Then another 107 to Porthcurno.

Visit Burgh Island, stay a night in that area, on to Cornwall next day , visit Minack theatre, stay a night near there, home the next day?

Burgh Island, stay a night, Minack theatre, stay a night, home another way and stay a night on the way (for those that want to)?

Short visit Burgh Island, on to Cornwall, stay near Minack Theatre, see theatre, come home next day?

Seems to me it's be a shame to go all that way and not hang around long enough to appreciate it!  But I'll prolly stay longer, whatever the rest decide.

Thanks Bobbi

I'd love to do a weekend trip via Burgh Island and The Minack Theatre. (you gotta see a performance if you go there).

Campings cheaper but if we get enough people to commit to it and at the right time of year we might get a cheap deal with proper beds?  and maybe a bar!!!!We have enough time to pester the Monkey Crew and owners of suitable establishments to accept us!

fancy organising it together??

Cheers

Iain

Also maybe make it longer like you suggest.

Lets gets this rolling. I reckon one  night at Burgh one night at Porthcurno and another somewhere else on the way back.

Lets see what events are on next year and try and visit one on the way back perhaps?

The only way I'd get that much time off work is to book a full week -& our Post Office holidays have to be booked a year in advance. I've just applied for dates in the period from March 2007 to March 2008! And even though I've applied for dates, I won't know for another few weeks yet whether I've actually got them or not. If it helps, I've applied for the week beginning 6th August 07 & the first 2 weeks in October 07. Also asked for the first 2 weeks in June but hoping to go to Canada then.

Bloody hell I'm not stopping off in Canada on the way back from Porthcurno. ;D

That'd be a serious road trip! My sister's just emigrated there. She's my brother Brock's sister too funnily enough.
It's minus 21 degress with 20 inches of snow there now!

So what did you have in mind for the Cornwall trip Andy?  All the way in a day, calling at Burgh Island on the way, then back the next day?

That's not a trip, that's an endurance contest!

I really enjoy travelling -assuming the trike's up to it after it's rebuild I'd quite happily do it in a day, but would be nice to get to know those here that I only see as names on a screen. The Post Office holiday system's a real pain -can't plan anything. I think I'm going to have to be ill for a few days in the Summer!

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?

H Guys,
would love to join you..but...The trike may not be ready, something to aim for though.
Please please please may I bring the car if I need to? It would be really great to meet up with the folks from here.
Are partners welcome too? My wife would fancy coming along.
Don't mind camping or B&B. I guess that a B&B would have its advantages especially if the weather turns nasty, not trying to be a 'killjoy' just practical.
Regards
Keith

Never mind that ....can i come too..please please please.
Was the tchah because
1) I said about the weather
2) The trike may not be ready
3) Can partners come.

It wasn't the weather - it was the B&B!

It's ok tho, you can share with Manky!

Don't understand this obsession with camping at all. The equivalent of deliberately going out on the bike in the pouring rain & freezing cold without any waterproofs when you've got a perfectly good car at home!  ;D

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?
Post by: BikerGran on November 08, 2006, 09:56:34 PM
Why without any waterproofs?  I go to great lengths to make sure my tent is waterproof and everything stays dry.

Nice, warm, cosy B & B.
Sitting in a field under a plastic sheet.
Hmm, why doesn't it appeal?

Nice, warm, cosy boring B & B.
Sitting in a field with your friends.

Hmm, why doesn't it appeal?

Because you are not a normal biker/triker.

Hi folks, please look at the first post and answer the questions - once we find out what everyone wants we can organise.

Or of course we could just organise and if you don't like the arrangements we can just tell you to go away and boil your head cos you didn't say what you wanted to do!

I'll come and I'm not afraid of camping.

I use a camp bed and very comfortable it is too!

(Yes Andy, I am at work, before you ask at stupid o'clock in the morning)

My alarm went off half an hour after you wrote that Bobbi!
O.K, I'm up for it -& a trip to Cornwall too. Put me down for the 3 or 4 day trip. I'll just have to develop an illness for a few days. So when are we talking about? Mid to late Summer? Not having kids I've no idea when the school hols are.
And yes, I'll bloody camp!!

I'm up for this trip.

Bobbi I just spent half an hour typing a reply to your earlier message just to lose my internet connection and the bloody message!

Will do it again in the morning! Too knackered now.

No probs.

I know I'm hassling to get this organised but dates get filled so quick!

You on dial-up?  When I was on dial-up, if I was doing a long message I used to type it in Word then cut n paste.........

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?

That's what I do with my emails cos my NTL account "times out" after a few minutes if I don't send it. Could write shorter emails I guess.
People need pushing a bit Bobbi. It's a nightmare trying to organise stuff isn't it. I took on an Easter Egg run for the Newbury MAG group a few years ago. Thought it'd be easy & everyone would pitch in. Ended up doing the lot myself & tearing my hair out. Never again. Come on you lot, step forward & be counted if you want to go.
I mentioned a pub called the Air Balloon at Birdlip, near Gloucester, sat on top of a hill at a local beauty spot. PantherShaun fancied a run there sometime. Just out of interest, would anyone be interested in a Sunday lunchtime meet up -say once a month, next Summer?

The list of shows for 2007 at the Minack Theatre is now online
http://www.minack.com/theatregoers/whatson.htm

Have a look and see what you fancy, or what you definitely don't fancy.
Me, I don't want to see Carmen (opera) or Les Miserables!

I'd love to see The Tempest but thats bang in the middle of the summer season and traffic would be hellish!

Edit - just noticed a major problem with making this a FRi Sat Sun Mon trip - the theatre only appears to operate on weekdays!  Except for 15 Sept (HMS Pinafore) and 23 Sept (Proms)

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 21, 2006, 12:20:37 PM
Ooh, ooh! I vote for the proms! Do we get to wave flags & sing all those patriotic songs we're not allowed to sing anymore? September should still be warm enough for camping shouldn't it?

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?
Post by: BikerGran on November 21, 2006, 03:15:26 PM
I'd like the proms too!  September is warm enough for camping for me, but then I camp at the end of October.   I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like it!

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 21, 2006, 11:34:44 PM
You talk like I've never camped ever. Used to be a hardened tent dweller in my teens. We camped right through the Winter -spent many a cold & soggy night halfway up a Welsh mountainside in a howling gale, telling myself I was having fun.
So are we going for September then Bobbi? If no-one else is going to speak up we'll have to come up with a date then just say Is anyone else free to go here on this date? Would give everyone plenty of time to organise holiday dates anyway.

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?
Post by: BikerGran on November 22, 2006, 09:16:11 PM
Fair enough, lets go for September - and if people want to go to the Minack Theatre they can book their ownb tickets!  Reckon booking early would be good as it's the last event of the year there!

I fancy waving a Union flag too!

Title: Re: Cornwall trip - what do we want?
Post by: BikerGran on November 22, 2006, 09:18:41 PM
The site says "Bring flags, horns (!) and whistles"

Sounds good to me!

I've updated the thread title to say it's 21 - 24 September.

Unless there are any major objections I'll book my leave tomorrow!

Still waiting to hear what leave I've been allocated for next year Bobbi, but I'll suddenly fall ill for a few days if necessary. Yup, put me down for the 21st to 24th.

I can't. All this talk about proms, opera, musicals, whistles, Gloucester and flags. I thought we were going to get some pasties and ice cream.

It's a long way just for an ice cream. It'll be melted by the time you get home. Thought we could go to the outdoor theatre while the pasties are cooling down.

Count me in will meet you on the way.

I have 4 tents not sure how but I have so if anyone is lacking "shout"

Think I have enough time to get the Trailer ready (like I havn't had it 2 years already, and used it once)

Time Off Booked.

Seeing as I'm down here would you like me to find the last Camp site or a selection that you can choose from?

Where's 'down here'?

If you mean a site for Sat night, yes please!  If you mean Sunday, suggestions welcome but we're kind hoping to find some event or place of interest to stop over at/near.

(also have to admit I'm hoping it will be near one of my RBR Landmarks but thats another story....)

Sorry my reply was confusing even to me!  Only I don't know whereabouts you are...

Saturday we're camping near Porthcurno and going to the Minack theatre, it's Sunday night thats undecided, possible campsites would be useful once we know vaguely where we're going to be - it's kinda loose ATM!  Deliberately so, it's a long way off and who knows what may come up between now and then!

This is Bobbi's baby, so I've had no input into the plans really -delegate wherever possible I say!
As far as I know it's still full steam ahead. I've got serious doubts about having my trike ready for the MonkeyNuts run but will obviously be there one way or another, but will definitely be attending this weekend.

I think it was Klogan's suggestion in the first place but I seem to have taken over!   :-[

Quote
As far as I know it's still full steam ahead.

Haven't done a lot more about it as it's a way off yet - but I suppose if we really want to go to the Minack theatre we need to book up.  I'll post the details then folks can book their own tickets, cos I'm not getting into handling bookings and money.

What we still need is a campsite and/or B&B near the theatre - preferably with a nice pub handy for anyone who doesn't want to do the theatre bit, tho it should be great fun as it's a 'Last Night of the Proms' sylee and the audience are invited to bring flags, bells, sirens etc!

Also in spite of enormous amounts of research I have failed to find any event to attend on the Sunday on the homeward trip, but I will get my list of Round Britain Rally landmarks soon and I bet there'll be something interesting to visit.

Maybe I better start a new thread for the actual organising?  It's only February but I reckon the theatre will get booked up fast, so I'll check on that first.

Hi everyone, I've got loads to catch up on here, back to mid March !!!! But ive been busy working on my trike.....and its now running and got all its gears ;D

Maybe the run could be called " Manky Monkeys go West" ?  :o It's ok, I've still got my coat on ;D

Maybe it should be "The Run With No Name"??

I really dont give a flying fart what its called as long as we do it !! We 3 are down to be there. If anyone has info on the campsites we may be staying at that would be good to know, what facilities they have like showers/toilets, free cake/beer? etc etc.
