Cracked subframe

Daughter had a slight collision in her van (Merc Sprinter), bashed the rh wing. Van's gone in to be repaired and she had a call from them to say subframe is cracked (but not from the accident, I guess they can see it's an old crack) - she asked if it was terminal and they said no.
I'm a bit concerned as I didn't think you could weld a subframe? What say you?
