i have been given a 883 sportster tank no idea what year but its not very new not much help i know the out let is on the off side and the hole has the thread on the inside . Most of the taps on ebay seem to have a threaded nut on them. can anyone tell me what the thread size is

Thats sort of what i mean Andy that tap has a nut on it like the outlet has the thread on the outside mine is internal to the outlet

Yeah, Harley taps are odd. I know I've got one in my spares box. I'll have a look & see if it's internal or external.

is the nut there only to hold the filter in place and protect the thread. remove the nut to expose the thread to fit the into the tank.

No they're a strange design Terry. The tap has the same external thread as the tank. You put the tap up against the bottom of the external thread on the tank then screw the nut up, to cover both the tap & the tank threads.

On mine the tap has a left hand thread the tank has a right hand thread the nut is half and half so as you do the nut up it pulls the two together. I think pre 1975 Harley and a lot of early repro or custom tanks had 3/8 npt internal threads. But there do seem to be others out there. Best bet is to measure the thread

I've got a pair of these if they're any use to you. One missing the filter, the other brand new, still in the packet. The outlets point in opposite directions, one to the left, the other to the right. Any use?
