Title: Basingstoke Festival of Transport. Sunday 11th May 08
Post by: Manky Monkey on December 30, 2007, 06:38:01 PM
Right, who's up for this one then? Check the Rally/Show Photos bit to see how we got on there last year.

B/stoke Transport Festival (http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/Photos/bstoketransportfest13.5.07/review.html)

Entries need to be in by 1st April 08. Fancy showing your bike, trike or rod & 'aving a laugh with the Manky Crew?
You'll get free entry to the event & a nice little commemorative plaque for your shed wall. Last year we were well & truly drenched, thanks to a torrential downpour on the day, but still managed to have a fun day out. Vehicles don't have to be finished -we've found before that part built custom machines often attract more interest from show goers than shiny bling mobiles, but obviously you'll need some means to transport your pride & joy if it's not roadworthy. No limit to how many vehicles we can show on our pitch so why not join us?
Basingstoke Memorial Park, Basingstoke, Hants.
Sunday 11th May 08.

You're more than welcome to come and stay at our place the night before. At the event we just have a gazebo, (Marcus, hint hint!), to protect us against the weather, good or bad, and trikes or anything to do with the site on display. We need people to be around though to answer questions and plug the web site.  ;D

Yet again I'll be away as it clashed with the NABD rally!  Oh well, can't do it all!

Just read last years report about the weather, and remembering the fact that I got completely and utterly soaked through on my home from NABD last year.  Stayed with friends in Solihull on the Sunday night, had a hot bath and got all my clothes dried - then was soaked again within half an hour of leaving them on Monday!

Maybe I should go to Basingstoke - might be just as wet but not so far to go home!

Was a very, very wet weekend. The Basingstoke show's always been blessed with good weather in the past -typical, the first time we have a pitch it bloomin' pours down. Surely it's got to be glorious sunshine again next time -hasn't it?

Well it's the same weekend as NABD as I said - and I have to say every time I've been to NABD it's rained pretty hard on the Sunday!

Donut Monitor -that sounds like my kind of job!  :P
I don't suppose the organisers would appreciate us turning their event into a scrapyard, but anything built to bare metal rolling chassis stage or beyond would be great. I think we're gonna have to sort out a rented trailer between us for the day. Loony says he & PD want to have their trike running & rideable by then, even if it isn't road legal. Loony Senior's VW, "Psycho Triko", runs but ain't road legal either. Hopefully Taz's trike will be on 3 wheels in bare metal by then & also the Pop of course.
Wonder if Brock could be persuaded to bring the Black Pig drag car along this time.

Right, bumping this thread back up again.
The entry form's been submitted. We had 12 almost definites on the list so I've applied for 15 vehicle passes. We just get allocated a pitch of the appropriate size & we're left to arrange the machinery within that space as we see fit. Doesn't matter if we don't use all the passes & we could probably sneak an extra couple in the gate on the day if we had to, so anyone else fancy bringing a vehicle along?
Only about 5 weeks away people. Better get cracking.

....yeah, alright, we'll be there, trailer or truck not sure which. Can you post some details, where, when, how etc. Do I need boards to put the stands on ? is there any cover or do I need a sheet ? (not that it will rain) do I bring fuel ? is there a trophy for loudest entry ?

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport. Sunday 11th May 08
Post by: Manky Monkey on April 02, 2008, 09:32:42 PM
We had 12 vehicles on the list, so got room for another 7 as we've got 19 passes. To be honest, I don't think they mind too much if more turn up as long as we don't overspill into our neighbour's pitch. They work on an average size per vehicle & just mark out the field on the day according to how many vehicles we've entered. Nothing to stop people showing their pass on the gate then walking out & handing it to someone else. Not that we'd think of doing that. Honest.
Yup, come along Pete. Just add your details to the list so we know who to expect.
Mr Brock. Woo hoo!! I knew sustained nagging would do the trick! It's an outdoor show, spread over the two fields of Basingstoke memorial park. So boards under your axle stands would be sensible. We've got a small gazebo to keep the donuts & forum members dry, but bring yours along if you like as it's more professional looking! Can't guarantee the weather I'm afraid. 05 & 06 were blistering heatwaves. Last year was virtually washed out by torrential rain, though it didn't stop us doing our thing. So bring whatever gear you think appropriate. There's a pub on the edge of the park & the main town centre's literally a 5 minute walk away. Yes fuel. Everyone runs their cars & people cruise back & forth all day so firing the Pig up shouldn't be a problem -without a radiator you can only run it for a couple of minutes at a time anyway. Just long enough to draw a crowd.  ;D
Loudest entry? Maybe, but Dave Two Lanes is hoping to have his 7,669cc altered up & running by then so you may have some competition there. A full on drag car flanking either side of the pitch would be pretty cool!  ;D

bugger, he's got me by one and a half litres. Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh and meeting y'all. Tent thing is looking a bit sorry for itself after a minor mishap last year, but I'll sort some base boards and bring some fuel, it'll be sunny, honest.

Right, has anyone got a trailer and a towing vehicle we can borrow or someone who can do some transporting for us to help get everything to the show. We were going to use the guy who has moved a few of Manky's vehicles but he can't as he will be flying back from America. If anyone can help please let us know asap otherwise we will have to try and hire something and we need to do that quickly. I have a class one licence so can drive anything that is out there.

The other thing is Manky would like to have a spec' sheet for each vehicle on show. The idea being if you email to me, (as my computer is rigged to a printer), all the details as in name of owner, (and forum name), make/model of vehicle and anything else that may be of interest for the public to read about the vehicle. I will print it off and laminate each one with the Manky logo at the top so keep it to 1 x A4 size word document please. You will get it as you arrive along with the passes to get in.

Life will be so much easier when some of our vehicles are actually drivable. :(
O.K, we've rented a 16 feet by 7 feet flat bed trailer for the weekend of the show, (65 quid inc VAT for 3 days). The same one we took 3 trikes down to the Shepton Mallet show on a couple of years ago. That means we've got a couple of weeks now to find something to tow it with! Taz is going to try & borrow a Discovery or Nevara from someone here on the country estate we live on. If not we'll have to hire something. These shows always end up costing a bloomin' fortune! Anyone got a decent sized truck we can borrow for the weekend?

O.K, we've got a change to the line up. Derrick, owner of the 2nd Dodge Charger, has had to drop out.
However, he's been replaced by Perry, who Taz & I met at Boxhill, Surrey recently & badgered for a write up on his car. Mr 2 Lanes has chased him down for us & hopefully he'll be logging into the forum soon. Don't mind friends of forum members on our pitch but it's basically a forum stand, so if anyone wants to put a vehicle owner forward, (we've still got 10 spare vehicle passes), try & badger them into joining up here & saying Hi, so we at least know their names on the day.
Oh yeah, Perry owns a rather spiffing Peach coloured '55 Chevy Bel Air, 1st heat winner of the Footman James Rybec Shipping Car of the Year -impressive title!

We could do with your trike though -hurry up & get it on it's wheels & bring it with you!
No tickets -free entry, just turn up & wander in. The passes we have are to let vehicles in. About half our stuff is going to be "works in progress" -the punters seem to be intrigued to see just how they go together & the unfinished ones often draw more interest than the up & running ones. So seriously, if you manage to get yours up on 3 wheels & looking vaguely trike-like in the next couple of weeks, bring it with you. It's not a huge show, but covers several acres & there's a bit of everything there to look at. It'd be good to see you again.
Best wishes to number one son by the way. ;)

If Bruce doesn't get my new trike finished soon I won't be able to go to the NABD rally as I've only got a day to get there and I know I can't do it in a day on the GT - so I might be asking whether you've got a ticket left at the last minute.  Just saying, but don't keep one for me as I hope I'll be going to Cheshire. And if I don't go there, and there isn't a spare ticket, I'll come up as a visitor.

Just received the banners for the show in the post. About 4 feet by 2 1/2 feet, computer printed on vinyl for a very reasonable 47 quid the pair including recorded delivery postage. From Tess in Devon. No website, but if you're involved with a club or event & need something similar, drop me a line & I'll pass on her email address. A very helpful lady.
Just got to sort out a way of mounting these so they're free standing now. Look out for them at the Basingstoke show & come & say Hi. ;D

Ooh, a multi award winner on our pitch! Great. The local Monkies have won awards for their trikes too, so he'll be in good company. Should have a write-up on Perry's Belair online by the weekend .
Taz is supposed to be at the first carriage driving event of the season in Brighton by now, but problems with the horsebox mean they're not going till tomorrow now -so you'll have to put up with just me for the rest of the week I'm afraid. And I'll have to live on Pot Noodles & cake till she gets back.  :P
Doc, I think we've got the gazebo covered thanks -or has the gazebo got us covered? Anyway, we'll be using Lunatic's, same as last year. Wonder if he dried it out after the 2007 deluge?

Hiya Nomad!  :)
How's life in the Land of Frogs? We've been at the Watford Rods show today. 2 bright red Nomads there. Check the photo galleries & see if either of 'em were yours.
'Course you're more than welcome to come along. We decided it'd be easier to hand out the vehicle passes on the day, rather than post them all out, so those who put themselves on the list, PM either Taz or myself please & we'll pass on our mobile numbers. Give us a shout when you get to the entrance gate & we'll nip over with a pass for you.

Right, all you guys on the list, we need you to email us a spec' sheet for your vehicles please, so we can print them & laminate them before Sunday. Just the basics -owner's name, vehicle title, what parts are fitted & what vehicles they came from, that kind of thing. My email address is on the Contacts page of the main site, or PM me here.
The banners are sorted -cunning use of plastic plumbing fittings from B & Q by Taz means these'll be stood at either side of our pitch. Look out for them & come & say Hello.

Hiya,
You were another of those guys I chatted to at the Ace & only connected the face with the car halfway through the conversation! Sorry if I seemed a bit vague! Haven't seen you for a while.
Yes, of course, swing on by. I'll phone the contact number I've got for the show later & check they're allocating us enough room! We originally asked for a dozen vehicle passes. They sent 19, then we bumped it up to 29. With our luck we'll arrive to find they've only given us a pitch for the original 12!
I'll hassle everyone again for spec sheets this evening & PM you all my mobile number. When you get to the gate on Sunday morning, give us a ring & we'll nip over with a vehicle pass for you.
So a basic spec sheet for each vehicle please, including owner's name, & we'll see you bright & early Sunday morning. We're aiming to be there by about 8. Latest arrival time is 10.30
Oh, Lunatic's checked the long range weather forcast & it says warm & overcast for Sunday. Fingers crossed. ;)

Lucky you. I'm still laminating spec sheets and Manky is still in the shed trying to sort out the frame. It's now 12.40am and we have to be up at 4am to get that last stuff loaded and get to Basingstoke for 7am. Looks like no sleep for us tonight  :'(

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport. Sunday 11th May 08
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 11, 2008, 01:17:42 AM
Well, it's now 2 o clock in the morning & Taz & I are still here.
Taz has been sorting spec sheets & packing all manner of stuff into the hire van. I've finally given up on her frame. Just haven't got the time to get it sorted. The more I try & rush it, the more mistakes I make. The headstock's not sitting true so will have to come off & be re-done, & the gearbox mounts aren't central, so will also have to be re-done. But not tonight. We've got very nice & very posh neighbours here & really don't want to fall out with them, but one has asked us very nicely not to make so much noise this evening as they had visitors -which meant no angle grinding or hacksawing. Which pretty much stopped play.
So we've ended up with the bottom half of Taz's frame tack-welded together & attached to the axle clamps & the engine bolted in place. We always end up with a half built project at shows so this one will be no different. The punters seem to like seeing the "behind the scenes" stuff anyway.
We'll line the trikes up in build order -Taz's part built frame, PD & Loony's built & part finished frame, my almost complete trike, then the local Basingstoke Monkeys' complete running ones. Then we'll pretend we always intended to show them like that.
So we're off to bed now for ...oooh, 3 hours if we're lucky. See you all bright & early tomorrow guys. ;)

Thank you everyone who made it to the show today it was good to see everyone. Even though I was very tired I thoroughly enjoyed today and I'm glad you all did too. It makes all the hard work worth it when you have a day like today. (even more so I got to drive the Charger twice  ;D ;D).
Steve you have great photos, any chance you could put them on a disc and post it to us then we can add them to the gallery.

Here are a couple from today.

Evening all.  ;)
Taz & I finally made it home to Guildford at 10.0.clock this evening after several trips in the hire van & trailer to remove all our gear from the show field & distribute it back around various workshops.
You've all already said it, but I'll say it again -a huge, huge thank you to each & every one of you that took the time to come along & support us for the day. You're absolute stars, every one of you. Thank you.
Taz & I have been getting so stressed out this week, desperately trying to get things organised. Didn't manage it all -the dancing girls & hot tub just weren't sorted in time I'm afraid -maybe next year, but we needn't have worried.
Seeing you all heading across the showfield one after the other was a heart-lifting sight. I hope we managed to get to chat to everyone & I hope you all had as good a time as we did. Good wasn't it.  ;D
Same time next year?  ;D
Just too knackered to even think of sorting photos out at the moment, but if you've got any you'd like included, bung them on a disc & post them to us in the next few days please. PM me for the postal address.
Time for a well earnt sleep. Thank you all & goodnight.  ;)

Hi everyone. Special thanks to Andy & Taz for organising a great day. It was good to meet a few new faces. We really enjoyed the day, the sunshine, the company and the blast down the motorway ;D ;D

Must remember that for next time. Warm up jam doughnuts so they go runny and down your front and sell more T's. Makes perfect sense  ;D

Message from Jacko,

I had a brilliant, absolutely brilliant day, Manky & Tazet must be congratulated on a fantastic stand, it was definately the busiest by far.  Book me down for next year, and if you want a hand with any organising, please ask me as I would like to help.  Thanks for letting me keep the spec sheet, its great the way you've laid it out.  I shall be down Alton on Wednesday.

Hi all.
Still utterly pooped. I'm getting too old for all this! Taz & I were busy again till gone 6 this evening, returning the hire van to one depot & the trailer to another, then putting everything back in the shed & the cottage. We really did have a fantastic day -thanks to you lot. Did you all go & claim your show plaques? One for each vehicle on the pitch. If not, we've got a couple spare, just PM us & we'll send 'em out.
Pleasure to see you & the trike Jacko. When are we gonna get a write-up on it for the site?!
Talking of which, anyone fancy penning something on the Basingstoke show to accompany the photo gallery? How about you all scribbling a couple of sentences on what you enjoyed about it & we can stitch them together.

Hi All

Was great to meet all those we had not met before and to see again those we had. Had a really great day out with great company and look forward to seeing you all agin at forthcoming events.

Well done to Manky and Taz as I know how much effort it takes to organise something like this and was truly amazed at the turnout. Will send in my pics and some words to accompany it later in the week.

Iain & Caroline

Thanks Byz -& Mrs Byz  :)
I heard you couldn't bring the trike along cos a car was parked in front of the garage door. That's the sort of luck we normally have! It takes a lot of work to make it look as disorganised as that you know  :)
Yup, piccies & words would be great, thanks. Bung 'em on a disc & PM me for the postal address in Guildford if you haven't already got it. Thank you.
Got your words Dave, thanks. Anyone else? Several of you told me you were new to the show & had never heard of it before. It's a completely free event, run by Basingstoke Council & the Thornycroft preservation society -Thornycrofts were a big local employer years ago & were still in the town when I first moved there. They built heavy lorries & transporters.
Obviously we were the bestest, most professional crew there  :P but did you enjoy the show? Did you actually get a chance to escape our little corner of it & take a walk around the rest? Did you have any trouble finding the show site? Or Basingstoke?! Would you go again, even if we hadn't turned up en masse & taken over? -Taz & I were one of the first onsite so took the opportunity to move the marker pegs & pinch a couple of feet of our neighbours' pitches  ;D We were the very last to leave the club display field too. By the time we drove out the gate the litter pickers had been & gone, the marshals had all gone home & you'd never know we'd been there.

Just checked the show report in the Basingstoke Gazette -no photos of the Manky crew of course. I'm sure our shirts have some sort of cloaking capability cos we seem to be invisible when we wear them. Taz & I spend all day wandering around at shows & never appear in a single photo.
Anyway, the paper says it took a 10 man team 8 or 9 months to organise the show & there were around 18,000 visitors & exhibitors there. That's pretty impressive when you think it was only on for 6 hours. 3000 people an hour passing through the gates -that's more than a lot of rock festivals.
We'll upload the photo gallery this evening. If you've any more pics you'd like to see online, just post them to us on a disc & we'll add them in.

Last chance guys -anyone else want to jot down their thoughts on the show?
We've got photos from Taz, Chev Rick, 65 Nova, Alan & myself & will get them all online as soon as possible, promise.
