Title: Board Racer?
Post by: Cabman77 on September 21, 2011, 07:05:54 PM
Knowing the predilection for strangely exotic old looking things, I thought you might like to see this

I like the front end. Not sure about the tank perched up on top of the frame though.
XSs are the new Trumpets!

:) My first big bike was a 650 Bonnie, then a 750, then a Thruxton tuned 750 Bonny -then 3 or 4 XS650s. Bought another XS650 last year so I guess that says which I prefer.  :)  Loved my Triumphs, but the XS is a Bonnie with all the faults, endearing character traits, taken out.

XS650`s were designed by a lecturer at University of Dublin. He took an A65 Lightening engine (BSA) and played with it to improve reliability and performance. What he ended up with was an overhead cam engine that looked and went like the proverbial dogs dangly bits. He took his ideas to BSA, his own quote of what the board of BSA said was "Overhead cam? oh that`ll never catch on. Come back when you`ve done something worthwhile". He promptly went to Yamaha who nearly tore his arm off when he offered them the plans. They recognised what was going to be one of their most popular models ever. They slapped a ban on pattern parts for the XS650 because they foresaw a huge market, and they weren`t wrong. The good Doctor went on to design the RD200 and RD350.  ;) ;) ;) ;)

I was at your place the day you got the 650 Bonnie, wiring connections held together with soggy fabric elastoplast lol.
Also remember the Thruxton, didn't you get that from George Fox?, certainly remember a 100mph blast down the Sandleford Link as pillion, can still feel my teeth rattling from that little jaunt.

Different but it seems to be unable to make up it's smind what it wants to be. More important, it  has one of those stupid push bike front ends on that don't work.

There was a bike like that on another forum and the owner had lost control of it twice and was going back to a standard frontend.

Save your money and your life   ;D
