Title: Sales of new petrol, diesel & hybrid vehicles banned after 2035
Post by: Manky Monkey on February 04, 2020, 06:24:09 PM
The Government announced this morning that only electric vehicles will be sold in Britain from 2035 onwards.
That's just 15 years away.
So what's the plan? An outright ban on fossil fueled vehicles on the roads? (easily done by stopping the sale of petrol & diesel or making it so expensive that only the very rich can afford to drive their classic cars).
Limited mileage exemptions for classics? -you can drive it, but only 1,000 miles a year for example?
A "winding down" period of perhaps 5 years for the majority of daily commuters to switch to electric before the Government get tough on those determined to stick with fuel?
I'll be in my mid 70s by then & quite possibly no longer driving, but those being born now may grow up having never experienced fossil fuels.
I'd better hurry up & finish my truck -it'd be just my luck to finally get it back on the road just in time for it to be banned.

Don't think I need to worry about it - if I'm still driving at 87 someone ought to stop me!

Apparently the ban doesn't apply to motorcycles.

Which is all very well but I can't see the filling stations staying open just for the amount of petrol used by motorcycles!

Im sure you will find a motorcycle resurgence once people realise they can afford them easily compared to a new electric vehicle

Of course, anything could happen in 15 years. We could all be driving our flying cars by then, or the whole "green" thing could blow over & we could all be driving V8 gas guzzlers. Who knows!

i'm not sure E-vehicles will have developed the power and duration that is needed for non-commuting.
i can do over 200k in an day for work, i'd need a battery bigger then my car

Technology improves very quickly though -things we thought were impossible a few years ago are common now. As BG said, it probably won't directly affect me as I'll be beyond regular driving age by then, but I'm curious to see how it pans out.

I will be very i terested in what they do about thr HGV fleet of vehivles that deliver most everything around the country and abroad, just how hig will the battery packs need to be to haul 40 tons up the country from the docks in the south, may be a fleet of diesel lorries will be parked in France and come across the channel to pick up the loads and transpiort them, can see the costs to the consumer going up to cover the costs.

Maybe someone can think of a way to transport heavy goods up and down the country in barges pulled along by horses?  And milk and food can be delivered on electric carts?  Could possibly work? 🤔😎
