Title: Beaulieu - New Forest
Post by: JayJay on April 15, 2010, 08:15:06 AM
Spent a lovely day with my Grandchildren at Beaulieu yesterday.  We are lucky having it right on our doorstep.

Here is the official blurb:
Beaulieu, one of the South of England’s top day visitor attractions, is set in the heart of the New Forest, the UK’s newest National Park. Beaulieu is a guaranteed great family day out with lots for everyone to enjoy including the world famous National Motor Museum, Palace House, home of the Montagu family, and historic Beaulieu Abbey. It is located within easy reach of the popular tourist destinations of Bournemouth, Southampton and Winchester.

My boys enjoyed:
  • the monorail around the grounds (twice),
  • the gardens,
  • the play park which included being able to drive electric cars for free,
  • a ride on the old bus,
  • the different exhibitions including ProMotion, James Bond and Top Gear,
  • looking at all the bikes and cars in the actual Motor Museum, especially the racing cars and the record breaking cars,
  • having a go at the remote control cars (50p) and
  • last but not least the Wheels ride (twice) which takes you on a journey to learn all about the potted history of the motor car.

Here are some photos I took of the ProMotion Exhibit (including an example of the way the information was presented which was really attractive and fun) and one of the lovely gardens and the bus. Not that my photos do the exhibits justice and I thoroughly recommend a visit:

I can remember seeing the Outspan 'orange' parked up in berkhamstead high street (near where I grew up), when I was a youngster!!!

Yup, I remember it being at various events when I were a nipper too. Love that cream egg car!
The bike & side car belong to the Hogs Back brewery, not far from us here in Surrey. We approached them to ask if we could feature it on the site, but never got a reply.

I believe there are, or used to be, several of the outspan Orange cars - my daughter Lucy drove one round the training road at Bovington Camp some years ago when we did a 'Ladies Driving Challenge'.

I seem to remember there being a fleet of 7 of them -but I may have just imagined that.

I saw an Outspan Orange car in Guildford many moons ago.... its very wide (and very orange)

Saw the Hogs Back Brewery motorcycle and sidecar at this year's Surrey Street Rodders Wheels Day (The Brewery is between Guildford and Farnham in Surrey)

and have had a pint in Busheys in Douglas IoM.

The story goes that one of the founders of the Hogs Back Brewery was a guy called John who I sat next to at school in chemistry (maybe I should have learnt what he was learning...), anyhow, whilst John was still living at home, he built a rail dragster (as ya do) called (I think) "Gold Digger" (the drag fans will get the name :D) and was a buddy with Russ Carpenter who ran Glacier Grenade (another rail), which was run up at the 2011 wheels day - sounded really (really) good!

The pair of them used to take the cars to the Wheels Days when it was at Slyfield Green (in Guildford) back in the 80's.
