This is purely an assumption, the previous holder of this class record was a 500 Indian and wasn't it what he took there before? Don't forget this is a short course record (3 miles). If you look at the runs, this speed was at mile 1 and he needs to make a return run, of above the original record, to make the speed official.

So these are all or mostly vintage bikes, just asking cos there are plenty of 500's that could do better than that without the need for a 3 mile course, i.e. Gold star Manx norton jap or jaws engined bike.

Bonneville is a really difficult place to go fast. Sounds daft but the problem is the height above sea level. The air is thin. Naturally aspirated engines are really hard to set up on the carb/injector front to run clean. Cams, Ign timing would also be effected. If you took your road car/bike it would be massively down on power because of this, so setup is critical. If I took my sprinter 500 I would either need to change the carbs or fit a blower. I would not expect it to make much more than 60mph on standard setup and would probably melt a piston. As well as this the salt gets everywhere, blocks air filters, gets into bearings and, I am told, the surface is like riding on an inch of fresh but abrasive snow. Not an easy set of problems to overcome.

Apparently he had didn't get a second run in to clinch the record because of fueling problems, gutted for him if you have a look on the Brit chopper site you can see his build diary and see how much effort he put into the build
