Title: Big fat tyres.
Post by: Manky Monkey on November 23, 2006, 11:35:29 PM
Pie's offered me a pair of 10 x 15 Wolfrace slot mags for my trike, but I need to find a very cheap pair of 285 tyres for them. Don't suppose anyone knows of any or a very cheap supplier?

Great. Thanks Toad. I'm off to bed now but I'll check with them tomorrow.
There's a set of 8 x 15 Wolfies for sale on the NSRA forum by the way if anyone wants them. Being sold by Sizzlin Sid, who says to make him an offer for them.

Loony, it's O.K, I've just rung Sinton Tyres. They can do me a pair of 295/50R/15s for £61.80 each so I'll go with new I think. I get one payday a month when I can spend a little money & it's this week! Whoopee ;D
Sid on the NSRA forum is one of Brock's racing buddies & says to make him an offer for the 8 x 15 Wolfies if anyone's interested in them.
Orange? Pah!! Nice minty green, that's the way to go.

Nah, the trike's gonna be powdercoated I think -I intend to do some serious mileage on it so got to be hardwearing & practical. Got to wallpaper my flat soon -maybe you could metalflake it instead?
I could do an instalment plan on the T though  ;) Would suit you Sir.
I'm orft to do some shopping now -Maplin Electronics are selling battery jump/booster packs for 20 quid, but I'll see you at the gig this evening.

Just checked the tyre size again. The huge 295/50/15s I've just ordered will be a whopping 3 inches taller than my old ones. 1 1/2 inches taller than Flap's. Ooh bugger. Hope that's not going to upset the gearing too much. It's also going to throw out the ride height, putting the back of the frame higher.

Title: Re: Big fat tyres.
Post by: Wulfgar on November 24, 2006, 07:23:11 PM
s**t thats a lot, so that will make the wheel height 27" it's going to change something that's for sure, weather it's for the better remains to be seen.

assuming it's the 850 Robin axle (3.23:1) and the standard 1:1 4th ratio, six and a half grand on the motor should see you cruising at just better than 161mph  :o   , might want to hunt down a shorter diff or lay in a stock of clutches for the odd jaunt round town

looks like its time for a regal gearbox!!  :o

Ooh bugger. Looks like I've bought more trouble than it's worth. Was in the pub with Lunatic & Lunatic senior last night. They've got a pair of 8" Wolfies on a...Camaro I think. Said they'd do me a swap for the 10s plus the tyres, so might have to take them up on that.
A good lesson- never buy in haste people!

Post by: flap on November 25, 2006, 10:25:11 AM
You've got a tyre size calculator on this web site, thats how I found out they are 3 inch's taller than your old ones and 1 1/2 inches taller than mine. Don't you ever read the other stuff on here  ::) Now you've payed for them you might as well fit them on the rims and try them on my trike, you can see if they will work then.

Post by: brock on November 25, 2006, 10:53:10 AM
just buy the clutches and get nitrous fitted for that annoying low gear work, or see if there's a 35 series tyre that will fit

Title: Re: Big fat tyres.
Post by: yoda on November 25, 2006, 12:10:41 PM
that was the problem with my old tyres on my old trike
it was overgeared as a result - stick to the smaller wheels mate
Its to much hard work keeping the thing at any sort of speed

O.K, a few phone calls & problem averted.
Sorry Mr Saddlebags, gonna stick with my 225/50/15s & 5 spoke alloys.
And won't be buying your Wolfies I'm afraid Mr Pie.
I really fancied some deep dished rims, rather than the flat fronted ones I've got, but just not worth the hassle, especially at this late stage in the build.
So. Mr Loony senior's going to buy the 295s when they arrive & fit them on his Wolfrace rims for his Camaro. That'll give me the cash to reMOT the bike & tax it in time for the toy run in 2 weeks time.
I was seduced by the thought of big fat rubber, but the trike's got to be rideable so I'll stay mildly sensible.
Of course, Flap's promised to remind me of my folly every day for the rest of my life :(

Or maybe I could stretch them onto even wider rims, Chicano style?
....Or maybe not.

Title: Re: Big fat tyres.
Post by: yoda on November 26, 2006, 09:31:29 AM
WTF
why would you stretch a smaller tyre onto a wider rim
doesn't even look good

get yourself a nice set of centrelines and some 445x50x15 ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Big fat tyres.

Yeah, much more sensible!

The stretched look's considered cool wiv the hatchback crowd innit. Been used by Chicanos & black Americans on their big 70s saloons for 10 years at least, but found it's way over here cos it means the hothatchers can lower their cars & fit wider rubber without fouling the bodywork. Several Golfs around here done that way. Just looks plain wrong to me & dangerous too.

This means i'm also going to have to rethink what i want to do about my rubber bands.

I couldn't understand why Flap got away with wide tyres on his rims but I'd forgotten he's got 14" slotmags. Bought for 200 quid with tyres, fitted & drilled to Reliant fitting at the Beaulieu autojumble a couple of years ago. We had to roll them around the jumble all day!
A pair of 8 x 15s & 6 x 13s for sale on the NSRA forum here.

The big fat tyres arrived today.
They hoooge! The photo doesn't do them justice. Trust me, they're enormous!
295/50/15s. A bargain at 61 quid each, but way too tall for the little Reliant to cope with. Of course, we had to try them in place though. Made the trike look like a tractor pull contender!
We've already delivered them to Lunatic Senior, who's going to fit them on his Camaro.

With the front end fitted, it'd be jacked right up at the back, like someone had kicked it up the arse. The tyres were of dumper truck proportions & tall enough to lean your elbows on when you're sat on it.
No, no, no. Not being tempted. Small, neat -& rideable's the way to go for me.

"Proper" tyres. 225/50/15s. I've been running these for the past 4 1/2 years. Hardly any wear on 'em yet & I know the trike will run fine with them.
Arrived at the garage tonight to find Nige has been cleaning all day. It's horribly tidy & now I can't find anything  ??? He's been keeping his own trike in a rented garage while I've been living in his but has to hand it back tomorrow so now I've got to be on my best behaviour cos his pride & joy will be in there with the grinder & the welder!
Axle propped in place, wheels on. Total width, 1450mm, (4'9"). Well within the 1700mm limit for lightweight trikes in the MSVA test. The frame was wrapped around the engine as tight as I could get it & it's a...err, "snug" fit. Not entirely sure the rocker cover will be removable for tappet setting! May have to fit the slightly smaller standard Reliant pressed tin one, but hopefully it'll be O.K
5" of ground clearance. 19 1/2" seat height.

Picked up a copy of the new 100% Biker magazine today. Nice bike engined trike on the cover. 345/35/15 tyres on 12 x 15 rims.
Drastically narrowed Reliant axle with "Vauxhall Nova discs & Golf GTI calipers fitted as per the article in 100% a couple of years ago".
Hmm, wonder who wrote that article then? (psst. ME!!)

No!! Tyres have already found a new adoptive home with the Loony family. The photos didn't really show just how enormous they were against my little trike. Way too big.
